The reason for the title is cause I'm kinda all over the place, but I like it that way. ;)
Gonna try to stay regular with this but we'll see how it goes.

I'm going to start this off with something I did for UK vs Seattle Drizzledome( a new interpretation of the statue of liberty) . I did lots of variations, but this is what I finally chose.

More soon. :bashful::party:

Woo Hoo I'm the first to de-virginized your thread. Awesome work with that piece for the thunderdome. Your paintings are so cool, it's always good to know one or two traditional painter. If you stay regular with your sketch thread, I'll stay regular with mine.

Hey Bojee,
I do intend on attending Art Not Terminal sometime this month or in the month of October. I need life art in my life.
Your work is different than what I do - mine tends to be rather anal (both figuratively and literally)! But I can tell you this much - your work is inspiring! I'll see ya tonight and perhaps your creative skillz will rub off on me so I can loosen up a bit. All I have to say is keep on drawing those things from your head...me like!

Mentler- Sorry to hear about your eye, hope you get better soon. Gesture stuff is probably my favorite too, I enjoy working on the other things but I think they are the most successful. Hard for me to check the color once it's posted, I host my work at photobucket and for some reason it's not compatible with macs anymore. It might be something they are doing here too...not sure. Photobucket seems to be the common denominator cause I can't see other peoples stuff if they are hosted by photobucket either.

Rich- I'm honored, just getting started with this thing. Your all over the boards these days. Anybody take you up on your challenge?? I couldn't tell if you had 3 matches( 2 on our challenge and one on the UK's) or none? I hope it's 3. Take care dude.

I'm glad you started a sketchbook! For some reason I just see the little :404sign: on some of the posts.. I really like those oil paintings alot (that girl with the big hat is cool). Was the model really wearing stilts for the last painting you just posted? I've never seen a model do that!

Bojee
September 11th, 2004, 07:16 PM
Eli- thanks for stopping by, which posts are you having trouble seeing, only the first one and the kong stuff are posted differently. Anyone else getting red X's

yeah the model was really wearing stilts, it was a lot of fun. You missed a good one today, the model was a ballet dancer, started off a little slow but ended really strong. I'll post some of the stuff later.

Hey Bojee,

I think I like the first comp idea more than the new 'side view'. What I'd love to get an impression of moreso in the first comp is the sense of the beasty coming in from above since that is our viewing perspective.
I'm wondering if this wormy guy should come in from the lower left and bend (much as a snake does in a tree) over and above the sleeping girl. It may create a more dynamic composition that creates a circle of tension. You have the girl's head pointing to the body mass in the lower left and then the body curls around the lower margin of the canvas to come back into sight right where you have the head right now, completing the circle.
As it stands right now, the face of the beasty doesn't cross over the strong diagonal of the bed, so I have to determine where the beasty resides in space (is it on the floor or in the air?). Does that make sense?
And lastly....that ajar door could have some awesome 'hallway night light' (orange-green, perhaps) spilling in across the room and onto the bed thereby creating a disturbing shadow across the little girl.
Food for thought?
Cheers!
D

Man you're starting your sketch thread off with a bang! Not like mine that started with a whimper... :)

I really really like your traditional stuff, especially the stylized figure quickies. And great idea drawing over magazines and newspapers! That's awesome, it has a very nice graphic look to it.

Redehlert- Dave, thanks for the critique, I'll work on it. I like the drawing in the second one better but the first one still seems more lecherous/creepy almost pedophile ish. 8) :perv: 8)

It'd be cool if you started your own thread, if nothing else for purely selfish reasons, but I understand if you don't. For me it's another trick that I play on myself to get me to produce. I seem to get more work done away from home then at home though.

Thanks for stopping in and the nice words, means a lot coming from you.

I personally don't care too much for art with a political message, on any side of the fence *shrug*. Anyway I love what's been going on here in this thread, the style is great, and what you do with color is sugar to my eyes. Not...sugar IN my eyes, but like O_o you know. Those life paitings you did last sunday blew me away like melted cheese flapping in the breeze.

yeap that's right. Names are the one thing I can never remember, I think I called you Aaron a few times, or alex...sorry about that. Well, what are you doing with your art right now? Is it your profession, or a hobbie? It's really tough for me to feel justified giving critisism, because I've been looking at my own art recently...and it's just dissapointing. It's not disheartning, but it's not uplifting either. Anyway, if I were to give you some crits I would say that the two images on the first page are your weakest. The ones with the child in the bed and the monster creeping up. Some of the anatomy seems a bit off, and lacks weight...like the limbs aren't falling into the right planes. Your life drawings are wonderful, so I think all you need to spend some more time thinking about the body, and how it naturally falls when drawing concepts.

It seems to me like you have the most fun when you are painting eh? You do some marvelous color work, maybe spend some more time pencil rendering, or doing gestures with just a pencil and your imagination. Keep going though man, I know you will of course. Can't wait for updates. Getting better is the most exciting part of art to me. The further you have to go, the more fun you know you're going to have down the road!

Sweet! <3 haha

The spacesuit looks cool with the round retro look. You see sky captain yet? I guess alot of people are dogging on it but I really liked it. The marker values really pop. I think im going to work with markers for the next couple weeks. I spent alot of time with the pencil cause that was the chosen medium for my T-dome. Doesnt feel quite right though.. I keep wanting to put in more broad strokes.. those little hatch marks get annoying after awhile :S

the 2nd guy is freaky.. i like him alot. Im about to start designing a succubus for my next 3d character.

I liked it , It was a little flat story wise and Gwenyth paltrow bugged me a little bit but I liked it alot , reminded me alot of the old black and white serials, Buck rogers, flash gordon, the rocketeer and all that. The retro style is so cool. :) :) :)

Figure over style! Make sure the form is accurate, and reads as a realistic body before style! Style comes later. All things (minus purely abstract, or fictional creations) are based off of real life. *ducks from flames in case he's speaking out of his ass* Block in that form, check proportions, flip the image, do whatever.... get it down before you move to the next step. I'm sure you're probably already doing this, but maybe something is holding ya back? haha...like more practice...I know I need it : /

Diggin' the SP dude. Started doing those myself. It's kind of an erie feeling to capture your own likeliness isn't it? Keep working on the SPs though. Based on my experience with them, you learn a lot, and improve quickly...they really do help! Focus on blocking in a good likeliness of yourself, check all the proportions, make sure the lines relate to each other, the same way the contours of your own face do in the mirror, then find tones. I made a horrible error this morning during life drawing. I didn't check the block-in with integrity, and the head ended up a bit too big in the end, with no hope of being able to change it. I was very happy with the drawing minus the head. I screwed up early in the beginning, and it affected everything. Oh yeah...excuse my horrendous lack of being able to be litterate at this hour...well it's not late yet, but damn, I'm tired. No coherancy at all.

oh yeah...

Nate- Your funny dude, your quiet as a mouse at the session but here your the mouse that roared. :) One thing though , if your going to talk like you know something you better be willing to put your own stuff out there in some way so people know whether you can do it yourself or not. Start your own sketchbook, post there regularly and I think people might respect your opinion more. :)

Now as to what you said, I agree with a lot of it, especially your critique of the gun piece,it's weak, but this is a Daily "Sketchbook",I'm more concerned with the daily part right now, just me trying to work my ideas out, I'm not too majorly concerned about it yet, when I get a couple months into this I'll be a lot harder on myself, but thanks for the crit, your saying good things, stuff I definitely need to be thinking about. It'll only make me try harder.

Now about you doing another version of my piece, go for it, pm me with it and if I like it I'll post it or you can post it. :)

Keep those crits coming, I definitely need it, make sure that you put yourself out there as well though. :)

oh yeah, I know dude. I was just saying, "for next time" you know, I wasn't implying that you should redraw the image, or try again...just giving you some things to watch out for in the future I guess.

I'd love nothing more than to have my own sketchbook thread here...but I really don't feel like I have enough content worth posting...and I'm sorta like, a hypocrite, because I don't apply the stuff I talk about to my own art most of the time, and it comes out lookin' crappy. School's about to start for me, so I'll soon have a lot of free time to draw...I'll try to get a sketchbook thread started before the end of the quarter.

OUEWRLjnasidufayhoetrvxlghbka!!

Those life paintings are awesome! Those paintings on that brown paper are the coolest things! awoeurlwdfkjasdfjha3w4ui man....you gotta do some more of those.

As for the SPs. Keep doing them, they help a lot! I really don't think the last one looks like you though. It's extremely contour. Focus on the planes, and construction a bit more before you lay down defining lines. The line thickness seems even all over and it's taking away from the images weight...it's validity...the believablity of it. Try making the nose seem more like an object that exists 3 dimensionally...give it the Z axis..make it move back in space, the harsh lines around the bridge, and lack of any planes other than the one facing us takes away from it's depth, and importance of it being a crucial feature of the face. The nose rules...take advantage of that and make an awesome excellent snausage for us to witness.

hrmm I did an SP last night, not too happy with it but whatever...first shot giving it half an effort:

It's kind of like what your quote in your signature says...the Loomis one. If you can see the tone and shadow on your own face, you can see the planes, the tones and shadows react to the way your face is shaped in the light. When you do SPs try to get in a place where there is one direct light source...I think that helps me. Like go to your bathroom, unscrew all the lightbulbs except for one, sit on a stool infront of your mirror and go. If you have one huge light hanging on the ceiling, try something else.

Michael- thanks dude, lots of new stuff running around in my head right now, trying not to play it safe. Too easy only to post things that you like, I find it more honest to post all of it. Trying also to keep up with the daily part of the sketchbook too. Have you seen Mindcandyman's sketchbook ?? Man, very inspirational!
Glad you like the demon, seemed a little stiff to me but the next attempts will get better. Creature drawings are very new to me, with him I was trying to draw something less gaunt, thicker than my normal drawings. The creature by the waterfall was after i watched Carlos Huante draw a creature. The Self portrait was me thinking about pen drawings, looking at Hardcore pixx's work and also Andrew's self portraits, more amazing stuff. Thanks for the kind words bro, don't be a stranger.

Your gesture type style is one of a kind, and that's good, you can probably add some paint on them, and sell it for millions. When it comes to creatures i'm still trying to get a hang of it, unlike Kekai who spews them out in a couple of seconds...lol, but yeah I'm riding the same boat with you on the creatures, but i'm cheating cause your doing all the rowing, i'm just along for the ride.

the Sp is better...as long as you struggle, as long as you strive, you can improve. If you really want it, you will really learn to see. I think the next step is to try and capture your likliness. No matter how stylized or insane Andrew Jones' stuff is, more often than not, you can tell it is him, because he puts down on paper as he looks in real life. Spend some time infront of a mirror, stare at yourself (in a non sexual way) Learn what you look like and what features make you, you. You're posting at a rapid rate, good for you bro! Keep going, see you saturday?

It's cool to see all the different styles you're trying out right now. I keep forcing myself to draw stuff I'm not comfortable with.. I'd rather just draw creatures, but I'm trying to draw realistic anatomy better, so I'm kinda opposite of you where your creature drawings are new to you.. ok I'm rambling now.. it's late and I should go to sleep instead of lurking online.. :dead:

oh, that latest SP looks great, but for some reason it looks squished to me.. like you drew it normal, then in photoshop scaled it horizontally about 15%.. weird..

ahahahahahha, yeah. and the thunderdomes too, nate, ehh???? mmhmmm???? hahaha, too funny alan.

This is a sweet thread. I always see you updating it when I'm up late at night...I always get my second wind around 11. I love your gesture drawings, always have. They are so fresh, and the way you emphasize things turns out really great looking. Something about the style doesn't seem...refined? solid? It's great, and I love it, but I think there is more there for you to discover, it doesn't seem complete yet.

And the portrait is great. I did like the black and white version better...because it looks like you adjusted the levels in photoshop. When I squint at both versions, the color one loses alot of contrast...it gets very washed out. i love all the reds and purples in his skin...you never realize how many reds and blues are in black people's skin until you really observe, its pretty awesome to see though, in your painting, and in life. The contrast in the black and white one works for me, if you could translate it into the color one I think the painting would be twice as successful...

Keep updating this...in about 2 weeks I'm going to start another sketchbook and we'll keep this thing real together, like the Hong Kong Danger Duo! you should get in on that too, nate....

sissy.

see you fellas saturday! woot!

Life drawing from today, didn't get much sleep last night but we had a great model so it made up for it. Nothing like forcing yourself to get up with a hangover or not enoough sleep or both to go to life drawing and then you have a shitty model and your thinking "man, I could be sleeping right now." anyway here you go .

I'm going to join the mob and say, "the gestures from life are killer!!"

what's interesting is that you don't seem to have the same easy confidence when drawing from your imagination (if I'm analyzing your lines and pencil marks correctly). The next time you work on a character design try starting with an imaginary gesture.

Crazy work, man! I love the strange lines you have. Your gestures are fluid and very different. I like them a lot. The paints are pretty nice. I'd like to see some of your more "proportioned" work as these seem exagerated, etc. So bring on some anatomy studies! You're sketching style is very cool tho. Try not to lose that but maybe just develop it a bit further. Render some a bit more? Just some ideas. Keep on truckin'. I'll be watching!

mmmmmm, I can't get enough of those figure drawings of yours. Normally I don't like my figures abstracted but you've struck gold with these. I've had the habit of always ignoring teachers when they say things like "go for the movement, or essence, of the figure". Since using the boards i've realised they are in fact important but you've done it in such a beautifully fluid and graphic manner. With only a few lines you descibe the direction the weights moving and noting the structure along the way. They look even better with the skin tones. Sorry if that sounds a little vague.

the school girl paints are looking good to but the cranium is too small, i.e. the eyes are too far up. If you added a little more hair to the last one it would look right.

I really enjoy your thread man, keep posting :teeth:

Steak- Thanks bro, I'll see if I can get some more figure stuff up for you soon, sometimes I think posting is distracting me from my other work, sorry I'm slacking.
Your right about the portrait, I'll try to fix it, thanks for the help. Thanks for the inspiration too, your tearin it up over on your thread. :teeth:

Well, we're (my wife and I) currently in the process of finding a decent life class. The one we were going to wasn't really very good, So now we're looking for another. Hopefully something will turn up soon. My figure work needs a lot of improvement to be honest. For now though I'll stick to concepty stuff, a life class will come along soon im sure.

I have to say finding decent classes is one of the real pains here in London. Unfortunately a lot of art classes are aimed at the 90 year old oil painters and as such things like gesture classes a few and far between. Would love to come and have a go...but the flight every week might dry up my bank to quick ;)

Anyway, in my absence, you'll have to do more! So thats all worked out nicely then eh!

Keep it up man, great great work as always.
Matt

Too bad, what we do isn't really a class, it's just an open session, we hire the models, people pay a fee ( $6) and then come and draw. We've got a couple of purely gesture sessions a month, and then vary the format of the other ones to work on things we need to work on. Is there anything like that in london? It seemed like when I was at the Tate or the National portrait galllery I saw and advertisement for one. Good luck on your search. :)

whoa. I see improvements! <3 The gesture stuff owns me! and I love the sitting people. The schoolgirl on the large canvas was really cool, the only small problem I see with it, is in the jaw. It doesn't seem quite straight, there is a small distracting divit where the jaw meets the chin, not a big problem though. The painting session was cool, and thanks for letting me watch you guys, although I think I would have stayed at home if I knew my car was going to get broken into and all my shizzz was gonna get stolen :dead: hehe.

Great gestures as always, so is gesture just really quick sketches of a certain pose, because your gesture drawings are so different from everyone else, I guess that's why it's stands out more than others.

Whoa Nate your car got broken into? Sorry to hear that, was it near the life drawing session? That sucks I had 2 friends that had their stuff stolen 4 times each person. It's a bummer when will people quit learning to steal....well I'm off to the store I gonna get myself some new pencils using my 5 finger discounts.

Nate- sorry your car got broken into, where did you park? we haven't had any problems like that before.

Sok- I don't know if you were serious about the gesture question but they are just quick drawings while the model holds the pose for avery short amount of time, 1min, 2min, 3mins,I've done 30sec and 15 sec but they seem to work best after I've warmed up a bit. Not exactly sure why gestures are different than others, guess just the way I was taught and me trying to do the things I like in other peoples work, I was taught to break it down to the essentials, what about the pose and the model that makes it/them unique. thanks for stopping by.

right outside the gallery. maybe I left something in view but I don't think so. I'm not upset about it. It's just bothersome...if only that person would have waited for me to come out, I would have given them what they took. Then I wouldn't have to drive around cold. Brbrrrrrrr

Mentler- Thank you, If I get to pick I think I'd lean more towards Marbury Brown, I love old school Illustrators. Bill Sienkiewicz was and is a big influence on my sketching style, I like Kent Williams and Dave McKean too. They both were influenced by Barron Storey. I also love Egon Scheile's work as well. Many others that are thrown into the mix and hopefully some of my own personality as well. :)

This isn't my work for any just tuning in, just talking about influences, this is Bill Sienkiewicz's work, if you haven't seen his sketchbook or comics seek them out.

Mckean's a stud too, have you ever seen "Cages". Do you know Barron Storey? He used to be a big time illustrator/teacher in new york, he's had influence over many artist out there now that I think are cutting edge. Dave McKean,Kent Williams, George Pratt, and countless others. Barron Storey Link (http://www.barronstorey.com/index.htm)
