Dude first of all congratulations
on graduation on CCAD
im happy you did it
cause now you will spend mo
on your projects
you did it dude it was long wait
but these works are amazing
when i looked at the illustration
in the CA mainpage cover
i knew it was yours, watching
snow warriors style of rendering
someway made me see that
theres some style you developed
your renderings ans specially
trademarks on hair
i like a lot this pages, its cool
you are on daily skjetchs dudes
too bad you didnt go to Austin
cause it would have been awesome
see this live that pen anatomy
sketch is DOPE ists freaking cool linework
but my favorite is the girl with ornaments
her anatomy is very well
depicted her small chest and overall proportion
is great, i like the detail on fabrics
very creative designs and face placements
with hair is very charasteristical,
i like that back girl dress study also that
value placement really helps
pop that butt out hehehe
your portfolio compilation on this thread JOSHUA (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29697)
is solid and has variation on themes
technique and media very cool
congratulations again dude keep on and good luck

Excellent work man, i really like ure characters from ure first post, its kind of cartoony but its got all the perfect anatomy and studd to make it semi realistic, looks like it came straight out of a disney film.
Although a small update its not weak. I really like it, looks like a robot from star warz. Only thing that bothers me with it is the functionality, from the way u drawn it, it looks like it might have some problems moving its arms, they look a little rigid.
Nice work though, post more soon :).

November 18th, 2004, 11:23 AM
This is a card illustration of a Japanese Giesha Bot done for work. Since the printed image is only about 2 inches across hopefully anything that sucks about it won't be so apparent.
Here is the process...
I had an intial drawing that wasn't working but, I did like the background so I just erased the main character and kept the background. Time was slim so I just kept the first quick pose I liked...
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot1.jpg
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot2.jpg
As you can see I worked out some of the values and the drawing a bit...
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot3.jpg
Here I brought the image to a top layer and set the layer option to "multiply" and on the background layer I layed in a gradient. I don't usually use gradients but, I wanted to try it out.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot4.jpg
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot5.jpg
From here I've just been blocking in colours and a bit more of the drawing..
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot6.jpg
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot7.jpg
At this point I added a new layer over the line drawing and the background so I can work in some opaques...
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot8.jpg
More opaques and lighting...
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot9.jpg
Always reworking the drawing as I paint...and the background...
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot10.jpg
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot11.jpg
All the while you can tell her right Arm is insanely long in comparison, so I made sure to shrink it down a bit. Also from the beginning I really wasn't working with Asian looking eyes, I resolved it a bit but, as you can see they could stand to be a more Asian. If I had more time I would have completely resolved the background but, being a card illustration it won't matter that much.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot12.jpg
And there you have it Mediocrity!
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/GieshaBot13.jpg
-JtJ
:Edit: Geezus! that background is kind of painful! Good thing it'll be printed about 2 inches wide.

Hey JoshuatheJames, thats the first time i visit your sketchbook and its fantastic. I especially like your colour work, although your drawings are great too. These last few character drawings: what are they done with? Pencils and Markers? All the different forms you use in your characters are just amazing and the fact that you never repeat in your drawings is nice too.
Really love the compositions.

nice alchohol-rubbed pencils. I assume that's how you get those nice soft value changes? The tut on the painting was great, my only crit is her arm (our left) still looks pretty long. -But- when you move the figure around like you do (to great effect) you can get away with it.

You guys may find this Humorous. They accidentally left another artists name on a card illustration of mine. There are process pics of this image at the bottom of the first page of this thread.

Andy- Thanks but, actually using a Cole-Erase pencil on the right paper can really spead up rendering time. It takes no time really. I love the consistency of those pencils. Lets hope they really were not discontinued. :[
(the Sketchbook is a Canson 8x8inches.)
cateaic, Burning Eyes, Majestyx, Jokisalo, steak-tron, IanE, MrFrost- Thanks Guys.
ZebzFree- Hahahha. Everytime I see your Avatar I crack up. "I nneed more Cow Bell"
bRyaN- Thanks. Won't be attending the Workshop. My cash flow is tight :( ah well. Perhaps I'll attend if there's a next time...

looks cool, i like that you have created your own world and technoligy when it comes to tech. soldiers and such.
looks great ! love the brush/texture test, very alive !
but they all have a tendency to look unreal, and i mean that by its twisted to your style of drawing... (just rambling)
cheers !

WOW. I love your rendering, it is so smooth and soft. Your line work is crazy, and all the detail that is those robot suit design things is wicked!
Keep posting man, it was fun to look at all of this.
BTW, what's a cole-erase pencil and what's the right paper? And most of all, how does it help to spped things up?

Man, I dont do enough posts in your sketchthread. Im always so impressed when I see your work. Great updates, Joshua!
And congratulations on the Wizards of the Coast work! That sucks they gave your credit to someone else tho. Have you done other cards for those guys?
And your last two sketchbook pages definitely DO NOT suck. I especially love those bottom right two characters on Dec 19th's page. Cool designs!
Keep up the great work, JtJ!!
Cheers!~~~JadeDragon

I'm really enjoying your linework and I'm sorry I didn't find my way to your art threads sooner!
I think your better images are the ones where your pushed the motion and the values hard. Hm, that's not too helpful, I just said "your better images are better." Let's try again: work towards intensity of motion and value, keep it in mind more often and I think you'll have fewer drawings that you dislike.
I'll be looking for your next update. :)

All bullshit aside, you have some of the most stylistically recognizeable sketches on this site, good sir.
That truly blows about the card credit. I have a troupe of ninjas awaiting their task. Give me the word, and they'll make sure that company never forgets the name JoshuatheJames again!!
Out of curiousity what colors of red and violet colerase did you use on the last few sketches? I keep noodling through my box of them trying to find the match, and never can.
Keep on truckin, bro.

Yo JtJ,
Sorry to hear about the card thing, man. They don't deserve your service, and you don't deserve their dumb mistake. Your name should've been there so everyone will know... The James.
Anyway, I'm always impressed with your works man, post some more!

Mediocrity?? Don't make me hurt you. Sorry I'm a bit late checking in with this thread, but seriously that Geisha bot is one of my favorite pieces that I've seen from you, and trust me, I have quite a few favorites:) I also dig the bejesus out of that crazy werewolf-orc experiment in photoshop...I associate words like smooooth and creeeeeamy with joshuathejames, but that piece is way different from your normal stuff and me likes the variety. Dang it, why won't photoshop do stuff like that for me? Keep it up!

Dude. Your shit is amazing. I should have replied a long time ago, but hey....no crits. :) WHen I dont have a crit I usually hold my tongue and dont say much. Lately I have been dropping encouragement, too...because it really does help.
Anyway, rambling. I really like your work. Its YOU. You definitely have a style. Im hoping to find mine at some point.

Hi,
I got to say i love those sketches, really neat...
Do you do a lot of scribble underneath before coming up with the clean ?
I see you focused a lot on your line didn't you ?
I'm currently facing a problem with mine, which hasn't the fluidity, the emotion i'd like...
How did you do to develop your line ? any "exercises" ? copying?
Another little question, do you do these sketch quickly, or are the movements of the pencil rather slow ? and the rapidity is an illusion given by the fluidity of lines ?
Thank you very much, hoping for an update soon :)

I'm not a person to be envious or jealous, but I am totally jealous of you, Joshua, you're so terribly talented and one of my biggest inspirations. It's incredible to see somebody so humble and yet so talented that has time to give back to the starting and starving artists on CA and with everything else you do.
You're a huge inspiration. Thanks for sharing these sketches and pleeeaaase update when you can!

very awesome sketches. I've noticed though that your costumes, armors, and robots have very similar designs. I'm no expert but wouldn't that get you or whoever u work for into some copywright infringements? Well some of your most recent ones seem to be breaking away from the other ones a bit. I like your work alot, very good renderings/designs, but I would love to see something different from you.
