If I were to keep waiting until everything was just right I would never post anything...so here we are.
I have finally Graduated Art College(CCAD) in May and I have yet to find time to put together my new site. Freelance will eat your soul! heh. In a good way. I know Improvements need to be made here and there, here and there...and they will be as time permits.
C&C are always welcome.
thanks,

Congtats man, I must say You've come a LONG way since challenging wes9000 for the very first t dome back in 02. AS soon as I saw your picture on the front page of CA, I thought, hey dope picture by joshua. Your style is just as destinct as a lot of other pros. I didnt even need to see your name on the pic (which it isnt on there..) to tell it was done by you.
Props and goodluck, you have a large ass journey infront of you!!! Keep posting and conributing to this pace.

I'm going to take what two people said... Foster said, follow your heart. Don't ever forget that, because as Bammer said: ... you've earned it.
I want to comment on a few pieces in particular but don't have the time now I want to put into it, so I'm going to return to do that.

that's some great stuff, i love these watercolor(?) city einvironments..
one major crit though... most of the time your materials look all the same. in your colored pieces, it looks like everything is made of clay or wax or something, even hair or metal.. that looks really weird. i think your work would benefit from some better defined materials and textures.
still, very good stuff, that last robot is so awesome!
have fun with your career as a kick-ass artist! :rendered:

MIKECORRIERO - Thanks for the Crit! I agree about the ships. I'm actually not too fond of them myself. Also about the Airship I meant it to be a low end ship and I actually thought it may look too rich but, if you think it looks "Generic" that may work out in my favorite. It was designed for a part in one of my stories. Those sketches next to it are just reminders for me. Thanks Again.
Shadowkiller- thanks, I painted it that way because I wanted the Submarine Pod to seem a bit makeshift.

man, when i look at this and think back to when we were interns at lucasarts, back to when you made the first thunderdome, damn..... we sucked then! i never want to show what i did there and i know you probably dont want to look at your rocks from then- hehe- but it was the foundation, the beginning of what you have just awed me with. you waited, you were patient, and you've worked hard and grown. again, this makes me smile. Hot tomales eh? Well I really like the lineart in your scientist/machine peice, I think the colouring could use some work (but if you did it manually and not with cg ignore that) Your women are great, I'm taking it that you distort proportion in favour of stylization (it seems you have a prety good knowledge of anatomy in the rest of your work) most people would say the proportion is off, but I think as designs they are flawless.
I think you're stronger at fantasy based concepts as oppesoed to sci-fi. I'd love to see some Majic the gathering styled artwork in your style.
You'll go far for certain!

Joachim- Hey sup dude. Thanks that means a lot. I've been following You and Michel's work since I first got on the net. heh.
Manu is malin- Thanks dude. Those building were just quick watercolour sketches not really finished pieces. As for the ships I think it is the finish that is the weakest point. They are not as crisp as I would like them to be. I kind of like a few of the designs, not all.
Thanks for all the enthusiasm guys!

You like Ranma½? I'm just wondering because I can find both P-chan and Genma in that heavily detailed samurai/soldier/thing guy. But geez... your detail works knock me to the floor! I love detailed drawings, and I also have a fancy for that flowing-kind-of style you use in most of your drawings, but especially for that one, and the ladies that look like forest spirits, plus the hobbit(?) on the ent squishing a... thing. It is really interesting and fun to look at. I really like the lead-pencil stuff you do. I mean REALLY. <3 I also put your site to my favourites because you really made my day with these. Yumm~

If had one criteque is thet when you painted the mechanic/invernter working on that robot you lost something, he looks verymuch unfinished, i think spending a some more time on his flesh makeing it look more believable it will greatly strengthan the rest of the piece. very good work thoguh, and i really like your maverick robot.

http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/S01c314JoshuaTheJames.jpg
a robot in a bar.. the atmosphere screams "intergalaxy bar for head hunters."
crit: table suface under the left arm can be darker; the glass feels just tiny bit too much outlined; if we see detail on the left leg, shouldn't we see some on the right?
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/JulesLineArt.jpg
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/JulesPaint.jpg
this is the piece I absolutely adore... a workshop for your broken time travel machine. open even on Saturdays /general time line/. oh I see the book now.. nevermind it's underwater sphere.
crit: right foot... since I am a dancer I would have to say this must be uncomfortable. maybe have the ball of the foot on the floor suface instead of the top of the toes. probably at this point he feels like someone is pulling his right knee down towards the floor. a concept question would be what is he looking at, especialy if he is trying to fix something with his hands. oh and just for fun: who cooked the meal for him? it's still hot, so it's probably not him.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/Con2004-3.jpg
I can really respond only to the middle one. Feels like a counselor/diplomat from star wars. or royal blood creature.
crit: i don't know if the thing between his eyes is flesh or armor. but if it's armor, maybe it should be narrower. as it is it probably cuts his angle of vision quite a lot. put your hand over your nose and you'll know what I mean.
the one on the right is definetely out of this world. the face is bit monkey-like. i love it.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/SWairship.jpg
reminds me of a kid's book I read once.. in which a bunch of creatures go thru some adventures trying to find the fountain of happiness or something. They travelled in something like that. question: the rod underneath. you showed it pulls back. does this tilt the main one on top forward, helping the ship to go down?
crit: well it is not really critique. the thing on the very top that is used for observing /I dunno the word in English?/ looks too big or out of proportion. maybe show us how big is a crew member, so we have a point of reference. Would really like to see a sliced version, in which you can see the diff. compartments inside the ship.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/Ganon.jpg
wow. this is major. i can always imagine the world with fighting races when I look at it. I really dig the detail with his ear fliped over his head. that puts him not only into environment but in a climate as well. great.
crit: the eyes make him a bit hollow. try them black. his belt-thing looks too much turned towards the viwer - his shoulders look on 3/4, when his belt shows his hips almost facing us. does this make sense? At the end I have to say I haven't seen that proud pig in my life.. lol it's awesome.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/Con2004-13.jpg
I guess this is watercolor. looks like a project of a city.
I have to see it as one piece to come up with something worthy. Bottom one feels more complete, because of the distant buildings. gives it depth.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/Con2004-14.jpg
great details on this one. he travels thru the land, exploring the world, all alone, discovering species and cultures. and you can see that on his armor plates and in the book in his back pack. very detailed. conceptually /is this a word?/ that is great, so the only thing I am missing is the boots/shoes. very important if you going to walk around for years... lol just a suggestion.
crit: the dancer in me is screaming again. i don't think someone can walk/take step with both his feet pointing the same direction. unless the one makes himself do it. right foot toes turned out will feel more natural. the image on the plate on his abs would make more sense if it's some kind of coat of arms. showing where he comes from/ that he remebers his roots.
on the side note... jeez this is getting longer... sorry.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/5stomaxs.jpg
this totaly kicks ass. I love the brown stomax!
crit: would like to see the stomachs a bit shinier /more shiny/. that will pull the out as main characteristic. Maybe give them names to highlight a specific feature for everyone. put the pumpkin basket further away on the hill. kinda distracts right next to his foot.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/1ship.jpg
i am not very fond of vehicle design anyway... it's not really something we haven't seen.
crit: the colored one looks somewhat weight unbalanced with the huge cannon just on one side.. i dunno.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/4shipsca.jpg
just a question here: are these hover over the ground kinda ships or space ones?
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/3chca.jpg
it's getting better and better. the one on the right is perfect I think. everything makes sense and it is well delivered. looks like he's from the planet E.T. comes from. sorry I always compare things. The white haired prince: crit: if we can't see the left eye, maybe that area should be darker. The warrior: man that puts me on the battle field right away. crit: I am not really sure how's he ging to turned his head with his beard stuck in his armor.. ouch
that hurts. but anyway great feel of movement on that one.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/arggscifi.jpg
obviously it's not finished, but the only thing that pops out is some movement restrictions, due to the costume. oh and the way the visor on his helmet is mounted I doubt it if it will ever come down. sorry I see it's not really completed.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/fchsca.jpg
lol.. I love how you wrote "cliche" on that top middle one. it cracks me up. The bottom right one is your hit here. I dig how she is bit bow-legged, makes her more real. Great look for a dumb-supporting-role-princess-sister or something like that. would love to see her in color.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/fspca.jpg
this is superb. crit: I would think he'll interact with the creature while it's on its leg, but that's me. .. man you don't like shoes do you? lol. I guess I am getting on your nerves by now.
anyway the only other thing is the plain blue spot behind his head. looks like it needs something to be finished. clouds maybe. just a hint of them.
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/8chca.jpg
they all have Scandinavian, ice age, Warcraft II look. I love them. and I can see which one is your favorite. *points at avatar* What were they designed for?
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/Monstersca.jpg
look at the belly! top right is the winner here. the composition of the legs, and the fact it's balanced the way it stands, shows a completely diff. way of walking/hoping, which brings originlity to the character. awesome.. and then: Look at the belly! I am really getting silly now... crit: the bottom ones look too much like koalas, not quite interesting.
two more to go!
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/get-dat.jpg
This has to be my second favorite one. Reminds me of the same world like the bow-legged princess I was talking about earlier. crit: the only thing that pulls me back from the whole atmosphere is the smily face on his hat. I guess it's joke, but it kinda takes away from the first impression.
yay! last one...
http://www.joshuathejames.com/Posting/ConBot2004.jpg
It's R2-D2 advanced brother! awesome old white painted metal look. crit: left shoulder /if there is one..lol/ maybe should be higher; left foot turned out a bit more; would like to see more details on the front of the thing that sticks out of his back pack; eyes being plain white make it a bit hollow.
Final notes: I am sorry for my English, sometimes it is quite explanatory, when I don't know the exact word I am looking for. I apologize again for my rookie comments and crits. I only hope they trigger something...
well that's it for now. I am off to your website... :)
EDIT: LOL and that's my first real post as well.. funny...

And it's still amazing, I'm so jealous! lol ;) Great stuff here, I got to get practicing so I can be good like you one day.
