I just got a great book, really fascinating.
It's called 'The Invisible Art': legends of matte painting.
Goes through the whole history of the art. Lots of shots of the paintings in various stages of completion, interviews with the artists.

it is a very good book, i got a few months ago. it basically chronicles the history of matte painting from its inception by norman dawn, up to the new age digital stuff, definately worth checking out
