View Full Version : Do you ever feel like your writing instead of drawing?

Sometimes I start to get the feel like I'm more or less drawing by memorization rather than drawing a unique, fluid figure. This happens when ever I draw a front, side, 3/4th, or back view. This may more or less be a style issue yet somehow I just don't feel like things are supple enough. Any ideas on how I can practice drawing flesh more reactive to pressure and so on?

well, the muscle memory thing comes from rote memorisation rather than practice. think of it this way. if you were to establish a jogging route, like say a few loops around a few neighborhoods, you'd make sure you watch for the right turns, weave around trashcans and mailboxes and not run into a busy street, right? well, what happens when you memorise the route to the point where you can time it to a song on your 'workout mix' cd? well, that's when you have to maybe do it backwards, or try another route.

i suggest drawing upside down a bit, maybe drawing angles you've never seen before. that way you'll get better at seeing the object for what it is and not seeing the object and activating some little algorhythm for drawing that. you're never going to draw the same thing twice, always remember that.
