I just finished watching this movie again, and I gotta say its one of my favorite movies. The plot, the uncertainty of the whole thing....i love it. Anyways, there's always one small confusing thing to me about the whole movie. At the end of the film, when the scientist guy with the virus gets on the plane and meets the lady, who says she's in insurance, it turns out to be the same lady that's a scientist in the future, where they're sending Cole back and forth. This confuses me because I'm not sure if they're trying to point out that she was involved in the spreading of the virus, or she somehow has something to do with it. Can anyone explain this to me?

I love weird movies like this 12 monkeys. Has anyone seen "the Game" with Michael Douglas? I love that movie too....anyways, if anyone has some weird movies similar to these or an answer to my question, please share. Maybe we can get a list of cool weird movies goin on here. :perv:

Most likely. For one thing, you can really see the look of distaste on her face. Also, she probably said she was "in insurance" as a pun; most people in the newsgroups think she was there as insurance against James' failing to collect a pure sample of the virus.

About the woman on the plane at the end -- the "insurance" comment probably didn't refer to "in case Cole fails," but in the larger sense of insurance for the future to overcome the plague. The future scientists probably only learned for sure who the carrier was after seeing what happened to Cole (whom he was chasing when he died), and must have arranged her visit afterward.

Also, I believe that she succeeded in her task by stealing one or two of the virus cannisters from the uniplaguer's carry-on luggage during the flight. My evidence is that the list of places the uniplaguer was planning to visit during the 1-week virus incubation period (as listed by the airline ticket agent) was about 2 cities longer than the list of "places the plague broke out" memorized by Cole.

These are just some of the movies Ive seen, and now looking at my dvd list, I have to get like just about all of them. does anyone else have any other movies they'd like to add to the list, or comment about?

Not just movies either, but what about books. I'd like to read some good sci-fi books somehow related to the genre of movies I mentioned above. Helium Macaroni suggested 1984, and ive only read about 5 pages for an assignment once, so I think I'm going to get that.:)

I've seen Vanilla Sky. Uhmmm, how to define it... first I haven't like it. It's confuse, to say the less. If you want to see it, go with the original, not this remake :)
See Darkcity! It's worth it! Donnie Darko too... DD has a really atmosphere :)
If you like those kind of strange atmosphere, try to watch Shadow of The Vampire. Really great film :) Pi too can fall in this category I think.

Not sure if you've seen Ghost in the Shell. Both the movie (1st one, haven't get the chance to see the 2nd one) and comics are great. I heard the TV series also rocks.

Serial Experiments Lain is a anime series that is damn weird and deals with alternate realities (the wired world and the real world). It can be slow but is very memorable.

For super uber-weirdness, watch David Lynch's Mulholland Drive. That movie drive me nuts :$

i.was.ink, when you want to see Vanilly Sky you also have to see Open your eyes - which is the Spanish (?) original by Alejandro Amenábar. Funny thing is that both movies are with Penelope Cruz in the main female role.

IMO Tom Cruise at his best! (I'm usually *not* a fan of him!)

What are you talking about Joshua? The movie does seem really strange and weird, but once you rewatch it and look at this site (http://www.scifi.sk/12Monkeys/faq.html) everything is explained to you.

Brazil is a definate *must see*. Haven't seen Vanilla Sky yet :nohope:

If you watch Jacob's Ladder, make sure it's early in the day. You need time to reground yourself. I saw it when I was much younger and it screwed me up for days afterward.

This movie will mess with your head, I like Donnie Darko allso. Im a big Night Shymalan fan, and was pretty impressed with "The village" It may not be scary, but the atmosphere in the movie makes up for it.

I like most of those movies on your list, and own quite a few I like them so much. Rented Vanilla Sky and I liked it but I'm into that subject(I won't spoil it!) Funny thing is though, with the story's nature, we had a smudge on the dvd that caused it to jump back to the beginning and didn't have any idea until about thirty minutes to an hour of watching it over. Besides that little snafu I liked it quite a bit. Love most of those movies you listed, never did see Donnie Darko though. Passed it over a few times but just never rented it yet.
One of my favorites that wasn't on you list, but skirts the topics is "The Cell," which I know lacks plot oftimes, but the visuals are just too cool to pass up. "Unbreakable," by far is my favorite on that list though. Still gives me chills everytime I watch it.

Hands down Brazil takes it, I remember seeing it my second year film program, I was in complete awe.

The game really worked for me, for some they just couldn't swallow how far it went, Douglas is what made that film work. Penn did a great job as well.

I am a Bruce W fan to begin with, the movie was fantastic, I think everyone who saw Pitt's performance was more than suprised (you can see a little bit of Tyler Durden in that performance)

12 Monkeys really missed the mark for me, not in terms of plot or style just in suspense and tension, it was a great film though with incredible cinematography.

Was one weird flick, made me think, most new movies do not. Worst part is these end of the world movies now hint of a possible end that is feasible now. & less Sci-fi.

Gatacca and V. Sky were also surreal and I did not like Seven much but got the hots for Gwyneth so watched it anyways.

Memento is a great weird movie that is hard to make sense out of def. worth a watch if you've never seen it. Donnie Darko is also very cool. Oh and the anime Perfect Blue, (this is not your typical anime) that movie will mess you up good. I still have no idea what actually happens in Perfect Blue but its cool nonetheless.

The Game is real good and so is donnie darko. i like them alot.

one i like is "Pi" (the math equasion) the director is darin arkofskie or something like that, its a great movie. havent seen all of this but "Waking Life". hmmn?????? what else "akira" haha what a classic id be surprised if someone hasnt seen it. thats all i can think of now if i think of anymore ill let yall know.

You might dig back a bit and check out stuff by HP Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany novels, Burroughs or maybe Dean Koontz stuff. Gets kinda heavy and cool.

The old Planet of the Apes movies pretty good too.

City of Lost Children is great...
So is Jacob's Ladder! Bloody freaky though...do you remember the scene where Jacob and Jezebel are on the bed together and she strokes his back with her foot? There's something very creepy about it...if you pause the film on the shot of her foot stroking her back you'll notice something...it's a midget's foot!

ARGH!!

But now on to 12 Monkeys...I'm having a little trouble remembering all the intricacies of the plot of 12 monkeys since it's 3am but I'm pretty sure Terry Gilliam talks about the 'Insurance' line and a lot of the other plot subtleties in the Director's Commentary on the DVD...I have two copies...why? I don't know...I also have two copies of Transformers on DVD...

What about Arlington Rd? That was a decent twist movie...
