The war wages here daily ~ the legions of white rectangles attack on all sides. Your biggest weapon is practice ~ keep your pencil moving at all times to defend yourself.

those studies from the anatomy book are looking good, I'd keep going with that.
Your other drawings looks like your mental idea of what facial features should look like is fighting with what you're actually seeing. Draw what you see, not what you know: allow the light and shadow to describe the forms, don't get caught in the outlines. If you start with the basic proportional rules for a face and then analyze the shapes and sizes of the shadows as they relate to each other you'll have an easier time building a solid-looking head that bears a good likeness to the person.

s. s. nails:
You're doing ok. Work as much as you can from the model. Look at how engravers use varying line in the shadow to define form (any portrait on paper money under the magnifing glass will give you a masterly example). Of course, years and years of practice!

thanks for the reply martin. Its really hard to find any figure drawing groups/classes around here. so drawing people from life is limited to about only my little brother. In a year or two i'll be able to draw little people without even thinking ;)
interesting idea about the dollars. I'll have to check that out some time.
thanks again

Nails:
Your Public Profile does not have any info. Where are you? Unless you are in the absolute boonies, post fliers, especially in gyms, dance schools (dancers make fantastic models), colleges (esp. art departments), YWCAs. If you can locate other artists who want to draw from life, form a life drawing group and split the model fees. . . you might see if some instution (school, art store, dance studio, church -- Unitiarian Universalist churches are often very cool on this -- even karate schools!) would let you rent or use space for free, even post notices in their location. I used to teach yoga classes in Minneapolis (yeah, I know, it was a BIG city!) and these are some of the places I managed to score free space.
Usually there are many more resources than you think, you just have to get creative and put up fliers, posters, email people, etc. Even n the boonies there are Grange Halls, Co-ops, churches, gyms, community centers, vetrans organizations meeting places, etc. etc. Anyplace which has the minimum requirements is a possibility. Even restaurants might have a big enough room they aren't using someitimes. All you have to do is ask around. Same goes for models.
You are an artist, the creative part should be a no-brainer. Most people can do everything but the art. You don't have that problem. Good luck and good hunting!
