hey all! here's a painting i've been working on for the past week. i started it with a fairly detailed pencil drawing i posted in my thread a few days ago. i then painted it in oils 24x48 on masonite. i spent about a day on the drawing, and about 3 days on the painting. 2 days for the initial blockin, and another day glazing and drybrushing a bit. i am fairly happy with the result, it felt good to break out the brushes and get my hands dirty again. i kind of got lazy on the right side, but in the end felt it worked out better compositionally. i always want to fill the picture with all kinds of shit, but think it kind of adds to the somber lonliness feel...dunno. anyway, i included my process for those of you who care, as well a a couple detail shots. hope you like it.-c36

Damn Coro very nice. i like how its very disturbing but its rendered so good that its ok to look at.

1 thing that sticks out is his jaw piece. is it flat or rounded like a regular jaw. in the intitial drawing it looks like a metal jaw, where as in the painting it looks like a flat piece going down along the middle line of the face. sorry if this is confusing.

Thank you for the process shots...

Though i hate to say this, but the fetus looked on your sketch really like a fetus...on the final piece it looks more like a child, an older being...

I think some shiny lines on the jar would push more the glass feel of it...(also some on the mechanical parts maybe)

Nevertheless a very cool piece again from you... :confident

Respect! The design, the mood, the color. This piece is crazy! The background works perfect too, The dark red above really adds to the clair obscure feel.

coro! fantastic! always a thrill to see your oil paintings and the close ups always amaze. your play with brush stoke and texture is perfect to my eyes.

oh, and the bizarre imagination of this piece really makes me want to kick you in the shins to vent my envy.

hope you are well and happy.

Skull + Jar of some sort + Wierd creature inside + wierd liquid inside + metal and industrial workings + you = Just fucking Great

Im hooked on it...

One thing I dont get...and thats because ive never had a chance to work with a traditional medeum.
When you do that background...I would think you would do that part fisrt maybe. Is it usualy done after words...or after you have the main character fleshed out pretty good?
Just curious

I love how you make the metal feel like it has a history.

Out of curiosity what made you decide to break the background up with the red? I like the way it works, but wondering if there is a reason, I feel like it really adds to the composition and was just wondering what you made you decide on that.

bwkeough
August 31st, 2004, 07:23 PM
goddamn! You promised to paint it and you delivered! Now, what would I have to do to get that on a t-shirt...:P

logically, I can't figure out what the heck it is or how it works, but I don't care. It's visually wonderful.

Other than he fetus face (which fozzy mentioned already) the only area that is giving me trouble is the part of the metal jaw that is underneath the skull, where the orginal mandible would have hinged under the ear. At the bottom of the metal jaw I read it as being on the same plane as the side of the skull (or a close parallel plane), but then as it is shadowed by the skull I see it receding away from us at an angle. Feel free to ignore my nit-pick, though.

weee..lots of replies! that means its not as much of a piece of shit as i first thought :)

davi: its kind of got that mood huh?

nova: dont worry, he didnt feel a thing :)...glad u like it. the bottom one is the final. nice and dirty..

Ant4d: awww shit...thanks man. but i still have a long way to go before i am at "amazing" status...im barely at "mildly amusing"

Nekokaiju: i do love painting old dirty metal! it just paints its self...as far as the bg is concerned, i knew what kind of break up i wanted compositionally, but went back and forth alot as far as color combinations...i knew i wanted a warm/cool break, warmer on top, but played with blue and orange, browns and grays...all kinds of shit. in the end i showed to andrew, and he suggested a red/cream bg. i thought it might look a little too campbells soup can so i used that hospital green along the bottom, since i am such a for complimentary color schemes.

Seung Ho: thanks alot dood! very flattered u like it.

demeter_luna: heh :)

Xpose: thanks!

bonedog: thanks so much man. makes me feel motivated to hear that. i feel so much like i flounder alot of the time. i need to do more of these :)

Blitz: thanks man. as far as the bg is concerned, it all depends on the piece, the support its painted on, the surface texture/color harmonies you want for a givven piece..all these things are weighed in mind before execution. there are no ultimate rules with that.

mephisto: heh thanks man. thats why we're all here.

Grump!: heh, you should get that looked at :) nah, thanks alot mate!

defcombeta: thanks man. i love the sick stuff i must admit. keeps it fun.

Bomba: aw shit, j. i do it for you man! i do it all for you!!!

Nineveh: hehe thanks. i wish i could say that about my stuff :)

cotron: UUUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

atilla: thanks! no real story behind it. just wanted to do something i would never be able to sell :)

torus3d: thanks dood!

Skank: thanks dood. as far as brushes go, i used all kinds of sizes on this one. from inch wide flats to a big ass one for the bg, to liners and small ass brights for the details. prolly used about 20-30 different brushes on this.

Main Loop: thanks holmes. that was an intentional juxtoposition. really makes the forground pop forward more.

JOSHUATHEJAMES: thanks. he likes you , you know....

emily g: i kind of like the drawing of the baby better in places too. he's more of a toddler in the painting. that fukking baby took sooooo long! prolly spent about 5-6 hours on that.

injection223: thanks :)

FuT: thanks so much, but i assure you, i am no master! more lucky idiot...

Groover McNab: my pleasure. im always happy to share my process...

Zeravla: thanks. godddamn my anal retentiveness!!!!

MIKECORRIERO: thanks man :)

Blackarts: thanks man. thats very flattering. i had alot of fun on those tenticles....

Oregano: heh...dont ever forget about yer oils man!

S51: awww shucks :) glad u like it dood!

pstraub: danke! you have been killing shit lately dude. im loving your last round of stuff!

foster hehe...thanks so much man. i cant tell you how much i've learned about brushwork from you...that detail shot you posted yesterday was amazing. you know what? if it would make you feel better, i'd even let you kick me in my balls if u wanted! but you'd have to wear the pointy high heels :P

RAMÓN: thanks man. hope alls well with you...

Fozzybar : i know i know...i made him older in the painting...its the lower part of the face. there are speculars on the jar, although they didnt show up too well in the photos unfortunatley. but i would dare add more speculars on the metal... i wanted to keep it dirty and subdued. the longer i paint, the more i find myself trying to stay in the midtones as much as possible. makes it feel more solid i think.

PriNcE oF SpAcE: please put me out of my misery!

Aerythes: thanks dood

Jull: :)

stewart one: i found mine at the dump...

I.was.ink: thanks ink

daarken: thanks man. how are you liking the new jobbyjob dood?

|NTeRN: thanks man...the jaw is kkind of lacking depth, prolly cuz it was the last thing i painted and got lazy. but its supposed to fit like a jaw more or less, with the geared piece sitting in the middle between the sides.

dem0n: aw shit man...thanks so much.

flex mathews: right on dood! hope everything going well with ya!

thanks again to everyone who replied. u guys keep me going!-c36

This drawing + painting is incredible awsome. Your composition is very neat. Nice detail. But shouldn't we see the head where the child is located should have a reflection color of the background too? Because the background color is red, so i guess we might see some red in the glasses right?

nice work, coro, i think compositionally the color and light changes more than fill the right half; together with the inherent left-to-right motion in mr skullheadbaby it was the right choice.

and it's good to see you work the oils... your hands are tied to the earth, and that's a good thing. if you let yourself get too far from the 'real thing' i think you'd be an unhappy man :)
