Really having some fun in Painter here...I feel like I've finally discovered the right equation in Painter to reproduce the traditional feel of oils that I'm used to.....but without the cleanup!!
This is more concept work for my book project.

I hope you like..crit and comments welcome

Hi Philip,

Just curious, when at work or doing concepts for your book project how much time do you normally put into a concept painting?

Hey Eric,

Great question...I am really working at increasing my speed for my concept work. For me timframe really does vary....with this piece I spent a little over an hour. When I am "on" and have a very clear vision of what I want to do I am very fast. When things are unclear in my head things can take awhile. I would say the average is a couple hours for loose concept work and maybe a day or two for more refined works. With my personal work I tend to noodle and I've been known to "live" with a piece for a week or two.

Thanks for the reply

Phil

Delta 1 thanks man! Yes, those are birds flying. Here's another one along the same lines as the first image post.

I love them both. I really like those torch-y light things in the second one. I also like the atmosphere of the first one a lot.

My book project??...I don't want to give too much away here so....its an art book that deals with fantasy worlds, fantasy characters that are all interconnected through a common thread. The common thread or the basic concept that connects everything is the what I think makes book unique so I don't want to say more....it would give it away. Booth the images you see here are from the book. I have posted others here...you may have seen this one a few weeks ago:

They all just look so gooood! Very dark with beautiful lights here and there.
I love the first one best I think, although it's hard for me to pick a favorite :)

the first reminds me of a funeral pire, for me the image has a heavy deep feeling to it. the second one on the other had even with the more hard foreground is a light free peice. it also most is a suggestion of rebirth.

great stuff

Hey John,

I love your interpretations...and there aren't to far off from the storyline associated with each image. Thanks for responding.

Looking good Philip,

If anything, I think you could render the entrance of the buildings a little tighter with sharp edges creating more contrast and thus catching the immidiate attention to the door ways.

(I recieved my copy of d'artiste the other day, it turned out real nice. )

Hey there,

I don't usually see you on this forum....really glad you responded to the piece. Thats a great comment on the entranceway, it'll "sell" the drama just a little bit more.

btw: what are you up to these days...any cool projects you can talk about?

P.S. Glad to hear you liked what you saw in D'artiste...I do think the Ballistic guys did a good job putting it together.
