i think there is no need to explain how you should aproach your studies as it is explained verry wel by Loomis .. so for now ..get those books print them out and learn and show us your progress every day :wink:

As you get better at drawing something, the more you will enjoy drawing it. However, you will eventually get sick of it, so you will have to produce many variations and experiment often to keep things fresh. That said, the opposite is also true in most cases. Hence, the less you like something, all the more reason to draw it

Lung_Bug kicks everyone's ass, so check him out. Also, try and find local artists in your school/neighborhood/nearby city, or buy a DVD or two at the Gnomon website. It has really helped me a lot to SEE an (experienced) artist draw.

Eew - I looked at your sketch book, wicked progression and determination, completly awsome, plus you can keep a particular study to one page...... i cant.

i use that site you gave me, but hadnt in a while, be sure to use it more now.

Lung_Bug's work is just fantastic, extrondinary, really is motivation.

There is one main rule, the more you draw the better you get, so just keep drawing, anything you get in sight is worth to be sketched, just keep working, draw alot from life, and dont draw what you already know try to see different aspects of the object youre drawing, volume, light/shadow, lines, color... dont focus too much on detail...

Well thats at least what im doing, maybe it will help ya =)

perhaps you can try this url....http://www.fineart.sk/ ....it is a good site for anatomy....
Don't draw your outlines too strongly....there are no outlines in reality and try to give us the impression of volumes in your drawing....i'm not a good drawer but i think it's important....

He has done articles that would greatly aid you in drawing from life(forms, rending etc), on location, gestures...etc..

Start from his oldest articles to the newest..he provides excercises as you follow along...

it certainly seems to be improving, your shading is pretty good, its mainly still the lines and form of the faces that are getting you. they tend to slope one way or another. you could try getting the basic shape nice and symetrical ( or in perspective) then add in details. just a suggestion though, and im pretty new to anatomy in general so someone else may have a more intelligent answer. keep it up though, it is getting better

Good progression! :) I see too many profile and full face views. Try moving to 3/4 view and do some renderings. Also, anatomy....anatomy...anatomy. :) Just driving it home...I know you already know. Looking forward to seeing more.

u like drawing heads ?
try to do some analysis
i simplified the head and the all the shapes inside..

all lines are subordinate to same rules.. u have one line foreshortened and a whole head.. the head is made out of 1000 lines but u need so be aware of the same rules

when u simplifie u can understand the shapes complexity easier becaue u can understand how all stuff and all lines and shapes are alligned in 3d space
when u draw the head from front.. u draw one line for the jaw.. same when u draw face from profile view.. u got a jaw here too.. between front and side view u got rotation.. 90 degrees ... between side and front u got foreshortening while u rotate ur head
its what happen to ur lines when u rotate .. they become or appear shorter.. they become -fore-shortened-

cube drawing is a ggood exercise.. it helps to understand all basics drawing rules which are

::: perspective
::: foreshortening
::: dynamic
::: vanishing point
::: symmetrie

keep up ur work man :D


ps :: when u look in mirror... see how ur jaw and chin shape is when u look straight in front of the mirror.. then turn ur head slightly up or down and see whats happening to ur jaw and chin shape.. it changes.. in fact it gets foreshortened.. to is with other shapes too.. lips eyes nose zygomatic bone * the big thing under ur eyes*..

yea they do good and save much time.. u may spend 4 mins for each lil head .. better then some hours in drawing one head with shading

u have done some real good heads.. i also like the dirty rough look.. very stylish :D.. when u think something is wrong.. its becuase the perspective is not setup fully or ur shape dont fits in the same perspective as the other do.. when its not setup correct... u may need more lines to support the actual wanted perspective orientation.. its same.. when u draw one line..
now.. u have more then 100 ways to use that line to draw a cube... that line uv drawn first can represent all lines u have on a cube.. u choose which one it will be.. u chose the size of the cube and u choose how its alligned and orientated in space.. this sometimes confuzes me.. i draw stupid line but i see 1000 ways to draw.. cant pick the shape i wanted... need more studies :D

pss : u can try draw a face like a cube.. easy perspective which is same with layers.. paralell lines.. no vanishing point...or draw a cube.. and draw ur face with the perspective that fits inside*

i think u god the basic idea behind this.. do some more studies to get the head shape more detailed ..be aware of its symmetrie

iam duing lotsa symmetrie studies before i rotate my stuff in space.. helps me to see how i have to change the shape when rotatet *its because foreshortening*

shows how i proceed.. when i draw heads.. i start with sphere.. then i subdevide it.. simplifie..then i see how tis cube perspective fits to my cubes.. depending on the heads rotation *looking up down or forwards* u have diffrent shapes.. simple shape transformation and then i add features.. first i keep it simple to understand the alignement and orientation then i get more detailed shapes ..

well looks like im screwed, i ve got a interview in 2 weeks, for college and truth be told i dont have a substantial portfolio (alot of life drawings and such)....... "then why apply"........ i dunno im crazy plus they will put me in a portfolio preparation class if you dont have enough or if it isnt good enough, so i may be doing that, but i ll try and put afew things together before then, who knows,

hey dude, what up? thx for stopping by my thread.

i like the pages o' heads youve been coming up with lately. if you want to experiment with them a little, i would say try throwing a little variety into the noses...they look almost all the same; very pointy. i really really like the big bug-eyed head! the way you drew the eyes makes it look like a computer 3d character from a video game or something. really cool. for tools, what do you use? you had said that my s'book is really clean...haha. i don't know how i do that. possibly slightly longer strokes, possibly the materials i use (hard pencils, from f grade to 3h; mostly 3h)...i dunno.

As i can see those quick sketches (and some more finished ones)
realy helps u improve.
This inspires me to do also, cus when i try to practice/ quickly sketch things,
i suddenly finding myself finish it to much, going to deep in details (bad habit i think)

I like this "quick" sketch style. I think it's a good way for practicing.
So keep that up!

And for the last piece i recognice that stuff, after scanning i always mess it up or something.
Most of the times i like the original drawing (with pencil) more.

Great thread! You're progressing already, man. Two critz tho. I like your rendering, you're getting pretty good with it. It's slick and smooth overall but take care to create textures with those lines and hatches. Also, don't be afraid of contrast. Get some blacks in there... darken some of that shtuff up in areas. The other thing is some of the work seems stiff. Something I'm starting to learn (having a similar problem, actually) is that you really gotta get that gesture down quickly and accurately. Maybe some life studies is in order. Gesture it up. Fluid lines make work come alive. I often over render or try to let me rendering carry a peice but if the work beneath is shit then it shows. Y'know? Just keep it up. You're movin' along nice. Great anatomy stuff, btw.

ZebzFree - Thanks Zeb, the crits are very welcome, big time, the texture thing I usally think about but just dosent seem to show up often and when I try to take extra time to make it work it kinda tunrs out more messy, I guess its just a case of keeping at it, learning what works. I definitely need some more life practice to help with gestures and the likes, I usally use too many ghost lines. Ya, I do the same thing with my rendering, I guess tha just a case of really getting the gestures down like you said, as qucik and as accuratley as possible, cheers for the crits

now for the kick in the pants. ;)

you understand the muscles and anatomy and stuff, we can see that. your rendering skills are really awesome. the biggest problem area that i can see (at least from the stuff shown here) is in the little things. your girl holding the sword: i think if you changed some small things, you could have put more life, more emotion into it (you still can if you want to, im just saying...). her hands really bother me. im kindof a hand freak, so forgive me for being critical. ive been doing a lot of hand studies and whatnot, mostly a lot of looking at my own hands and remembering what they look like in certain positions and during different emotions...the thing i noticed most was that the wrist is barely ever straight. most times, it is either bent inward toward the body or outward away from the body. holding something, it usually is bent inward towards the body. go grab something; check to see what your hands are like. hands bent inward give off a sense of strength; outward, a sense of passivity (unless theyre pushing something or whatnot)...this is what ive noticed so far, though im sure its not always like im saying. but, im just saying, its the little things that will make your drawing more convincing. if you changed the angle of jenny 'jumper's hands even just a little bit, the picture would exude more strength...you'd be able to see that more in her character. so, if you take anything from what i said, i hope its to pay attention to the little things a little more; itll make your drawings THAT much better.

and do some life drawings; itll help your people look more natural. g'luck man! :^^:

I was thinking the same thing while doing it, she seems i dunno unpresentable if ya know what i mean, lacks life like you said, and the hands are very odd, thanks for the help on the hands, i got huge problems with them. Your damn right i took something from your crit man, i really needed that kick in the pants, its got me started on more hand studies (bones, life,ref etc) i think if i start with them i'll be able to move onto more things that'll help alot, and i really gotta do more from life, hopefully i'll get a life drawing class soon, thanks alot man

yo man, what up? happy holiday season, bro. renderings are great as always, really love the way you do eyes. your last group of women, hit or miss. many of them, the lower half of the torso looks too long, makes the upper part look disproportional (especially the one on the right page, near the fold). her neck seems a little wide as well (as well as the woman on the top left corner of the left page). the woman with spread arms looks really awesome...untill you get to the knees. :[ duuuude, you did a wonderful study on it earlier on this page...just gotta get it into memory so you can bust that out in every drawing. you can do this man. just...start to do it. :teeth: g'luck man.

good value studies.. i think you can unify the values more after showing the separation between light and dark.. you can do that much pretty well, but when you get into the midtones it gets jumbly.. theres a lot of patchy shading that you can fix by thinking more structurally.. dont just break up things into light and shade, try to break things up mentally as shapes like cubes and cylindrs.. dont draw them that way but keep that in your mind.. the key is readability.. dont just try to copy light and shade..

Hello there.

I do have to agree, your rendering skills are really good. Especially I enjoy how you can handle the values on pencils, too often ppl tend to make too flat renderings with them but you are on the right track. Something I need to learn too.

And since you got pretty good understanging on anatomy and values, I would love to see you apply your knowledge on something of your own stuff. Go wild maaan!!! :D

hey dude, hiipi's definately on the right track. do post some of your own stuff; so what if it looks stiff? you can get crits on it that would help more than you just looking at it and saying its stiff. your rendering is awesome, now you just need to start putting it all together. and we'll help you do it. :)
