Great anatomy studies. I can see that you're pushing your rendering skills to the limits :).
Sometimes this horizontal hatching on in the background is distracting from the main subject (like on the last sketch) so I suggest to be careful with it..

That last guy is great. LoL Happy Birthday to HIM! ;) Your pencil work is getting stronger and stonger. Don't be afraid of contrast. Really fill some of those things out and make some of the areas really pop with dark darks and highlights. Nice work.

beautiful bird studies. Sometimes i think you could use some more mid tones. Could be the scan but i think they are either too white or have heavy blacks.

ChrisMayernik
February 14th, 2006, 04:21 AM
Great updates! THose drapery studies are great. Only crit is don't make the shadows so black. It would be perfectly fine if you toned the drapery lower in value so it makes sense that the shadows are black. hm... I mean it really isnt a big deal and I see your other studies are fine. I'm sure the real drawings are fine. Maybe try some with a local value so you have room for highlights. Theres a lot of white around the drawing making the contrast higher. If you could put down a even tone around the drawings then it would probaly look like how you saw it.
(rambling ) If the material is white then it's local value is higher and it takes more covering up to achieve dark accents. A very common situation is 4steps down from the light. Now you probaly know all this but maybe somebody esle who reads your sketchbook doesn't so I guess I'l keep writing. Now if I were to paint white material with 4 steps I would paint 80% white then -40% gives me core shadow value which is 40% then add 10 for reflected light.
( 0%is black - 100% is white )
so its 80 for lighted plane,
40 for shadow,
50 for reflected light,
and 85 to 100 for highlights. Now this is all very controlled but it is a framework to model what really happens and with enough knowledge of light this basic set up can become very realistic easily.
Shinryu
February 14th, 2006, 04:50 PM
ChrisMayernik - cheers man and thanks alot for the crit, yeah I noticed when I done the first that the shadow was over done, I also usally darken the picture in ps because the scan kinda takes away some of the pencil, I'll try and give that method a try soon, see if it improves, thanks again for the crit

yo shin, what up? i like the drapery studies youve been doing lately. what kind of lighting are you using with them? like chris said, watch out for your value range that you use when doing them, cause it seems like the shadows are too dark for the range youre using. anyway, good to see you drawing more from imagination lately. the hips on the last one are really interesting (in a good way). the shoulders could be attached better, i think. whatever man, keep doing them, and youll get to be as good with them as you are with rendering. g'luck man, take care.

Nice nice nice
The animal drawings are mind-blowing and the anatomy studies look pretty good too. My suggestion is to buy a book from Gerorge Bridgman.. you can never know too much about anatomy! Good job on the values as well.
Might even vote on the better side of 4 stars. Keep it going! -d

I have noticed that you are concentrating on the contours a great deal <> always remember that the inside forms create the outside contours <> always look for the overlaps to help create depth and most important of all fine the inside contour where the light and dark meet <> this is the most important contour on the figure <> this is the most important contour on the figure <> squint to separate the values and draw the inside contour just as you are drawing the outside or bounding contours.
It is the combination of the three contours that create depth and movement <> once again the inside one is the most important because it represents the closest edge to U and should be thought of first and not last.

yo man.
snakes are good good. profile girl seems to have some parts not in proportion, but she's beautiful nonetheless. some of your people seem lopsided, like some parts are in proportion and some are out (for example, last pic from yesterday, girl at the bottom's elbows begin at different lengths, though the pose would suggest that the arms are almost at the same angle. so the elbows should be a lot closer in terms of height relative to her body). first girl on yesterday's update seems to have very long upper arms (bicep should be shorter, elbow should be higher, methinks). your anatomy's getting there, keep at it. and more imagination stuff, and take them to more full renderings too. just keep it all comin.

yo, shin!
the last concept is nice, would love to see a turnaround on that one. figure studies are looking good; along with your anatomy study, are you studying what the muscles do as well as where they are? i think that might help you remember them better. i dunno, it helps for me at least. keep doin what you do, but also keep trying new things, cause thats the way you really expand your skills. like, i would love to see you do some still lifes with different textured materials, like some glass and metal and...i dunno, just a whole bunch of them. also, try to do more dynamic figure studies, which will help you see what is natural and what is not (for when you draw figures from imagination), as well as seeing how the mucsles change with different actions. take care bro.

Hey, just dropping by here, sig links really do work ;)
Great life studies in here, I love your line quality (sharp and confident), and the rendering seems quick, neat and accurate. Very nice.
For some reason, although I like your imaginative stuff too, the line quality and rendering on things drawn without reference seems a lot more scribbly and uncertain... maybe you're doing it on purpose, or it might just be my personal preference, but I reckon if you tightened up some of your creature sketches with the quality of linework and rendering shown in your studies, they'd end up looking even better.
Entirely your choice, though! Keep up the good work :)
Edit: Wow, yeah, just looked back at the earlier pages too - solid quality stuff there, man.
You really make me realise how much keeping regular studies can help improve your art... very inspiring.
One critique I would give (over some of the earlier images - maybe someone else mentioned it but I didn't notice when glancing through), is that sometimes you seem to give drawings a really dark outline/background just around the front of the face/body area, or sometimes all around - I'd strongly advise against, this, especially when the drawings themselves don't have much contrast or tonal range, since it really flattens the image out and distracts from all the nice detail you have going on inside. If you're gonna have dark, dark backgrounds, either extend them further than just half a centimetre, or bring the shadows in the image itself down to a matching level so they don't get washed out by the strong contrasting border.
Sorry about the waffling, cheers now! ;)

Great studies and sketches - make sure you dont skimp on the tones, or if you want to lay down large areas of tone, use the broad side of the lead, better than numerous strokes of the fine tip.
