Hey,
since I just came back from the Berlin workshop, I thought it was about time to post some sketches and give proof of how much it inspired me. Especially Andrew's getting-pissed-and-managing-to-be-creative-the-next-morning-anyway-approach has really opened my eyes!! Thanks for that man.
So here are a couple of the sketches I did yesterday evening and today:
http://www.bydecker.de/images/daily/page1all.jpg
Don't believe that I can keep that daily rate tho ;)
hope you like it :bashful:

Hopefully I can update some more pics tonight!
@keepiru:
I'll definitely finish one or two of them... tho still don't know which ones;)
@BE:
Glad I can pass something from my workshop inspiration on :D
@cartoonfox:
Yeah had fun driving... or should I say fun trying to stay awake with 3 guys around me having their sweetest dreams and sleeping almost through the whole drive. Took me 6 hours to finally get home :dead: But it was definitely worth staying a little longer than intended the last evening ;) cool too see so much of your stuff here in the forum.. though I recognized most of it from your »real life« sketchbook :dur: waiting for more.
cheers.t
p.s. just got that blue pencil and I do love it... it's so much fun drawing with.

K.. this doesn't fit into the timeline, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Some of the products of the Berlin workshop (I mean »direct« products of it.. since everything from now on will be sort of a product of it :D):

looking good. a bit muddy perhaps, try to use more saturated and different colors. A little red in the nose is always good :) What I´m doing to learn about color (skintone especially :) ) is grab a goodlooking pic, photo or painting, open it to my 2dapp and examine with the eyedropper what colors are in there. Helps a lot.
Here are some links that might be interesting for you:

Nice work t.m0, im really liking ure pencil charcter concept stuff, its all really slick and clean, very affective. Your portraits are coming along nicely aswell (the marker ones are very good, think i mite have to have a go at doin that :)). Especially love the one with all the bones and skulls.
Keep up the good work and post more.

October 29th, 2004, 09:26 AM
@phatandy
thank you :) You should definitely try the markers, they rock. If they weren't that expensive (and bound to the right paper) I'd use them way more often.
@darkside
Thanks for the tips about color. I should know a lot of this stuff since we did that last semester... well I believe the only real way to get better ist mostly by practising... so that's what I'll do (besides looking through your links ;)).
Yeah, I know about the muddyness, but since it was kind of a speedpaint and I became very tired last night, I didn't want to go over it again :) Glad you pointed it out tho.. I'll try harder next time.

Hey there :)
after having finished my last sketchbook I had decided on using an A4 sketchbook... which turned out to be very unhandy when it comes to drawing in a train, cafe, etc. so I went once more for the smaller size A5.
Now I'm using 2 sketchbooks, one for portraits and one for other sketches and concepts.
"Portraits"-cover (without reference):

cool stuff man. when you are using ink, sometimes your lines detract from what you are trying to show. for example, the portrait one post up. I squint, and it all looks really good and clear, but with so many lines all over the place like that, its really playing tricks on my eyes when im looking at it normally. Of course, this could be your stylistic intention, so maybe disregard, but my 2 cents. I'll keep watching your thread though, good stuff.
t.m0
November 7th, 2004, 03:49 PM
Heya
@jetpack: Thanks :D I know what you mean about the lines... at the beginning I had pretty clean (not distracting) lines, but I kept adding and adding to put some depth into the drawing. I had to add a LOT since the pen is so thin (0.4mm) ;) It doesn't look so confusing in the original tho since my scanner messed up the contrasts..

@darkside
yeah I know about the armpit ;) Kinda off...
You're right, it shouldn't be work... but with all the stuff I have to do right know, drawings that HAVE to be finished are considered work and not fun ;)
So here's some new stuff
from life, 3-5 min poses
http://www.bydecker.de/images/daily/page122.jpg
from life, 15-20 min pose
http://www.bydecker.de/images/daily/page123.jpg
from memory
(pretty neat approach my prof came up with: Our model posed for 3 minutes and we watched while doing the same pose. Then we had to draw what we remembered focusing on what we felt during that pose, i.e. pain in the shoulder area)
http://www.bydecker.de/images/daily/page124.jpg
and an early WIP. Reason I'm posting this is that I might never finish it, since I've already spent too much time on it. It's not all that exciting since it's from photo ref, my way of facing my skintone (and lighting) problems. The image is cropped and the whole figure (including legs) is currently printable at 2 meters height with 150dpi... takes its time loading and saving :D Only the face is considered almost-finished ;)

hey t.m0, nice painting of the girls face. :)
Don't know for sure but you could try to make the head a little bit bigger, the body looks a bit massive for a girl. And 150 dpi for a 2m poster? Wow. Perhaps you could paint at 75 dpi and scale it up when finished...
t.m0
December 14th, 2004, 11:05 AM
@Vulti
Thanks:) Nice to see you here in my thread. I know the body (as well as the hand) look a little bulky, but that's due to the fact, that I didn't stick to the pencil outlines when applying my basic colors. Once the body is finished, it'll appear smaller, so hopefully the proportions will work out then ;) I did try it with the right fist and it worked. Thanks for pointing it out tho.
just a tiny update.. haven't found the time to continue with the girl.

very very good. I like the clean lines that you make. Looks professional in your finished peices.
One thing I'd like to bring to your attention is your crosshatching. Your crosshatchings a little unorganized at times at it doesn't complement the contours of the faces or whatever you draw at times. Work on trying to really bring out the contours of the object and your work will excel.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people saying how bad the own drawings are and thus fishing for compliments (utterly hate those!!). What I meant was, that my last SP sucks really badly when it comes to proportions (of my face) and likeness. Just wanted to make that clear :dur:

Coolness all around, life inks are a bit rough on the edges,
try not to make so many strokes, strive to capture the personality
and volumen with out taking the pen out of the page,
inks are hard as hell so keep praticing man, and keep the inspiration UP!! :D

The inking style is real well done, but my only crit would be the pose is looking o so stiff - its like hes balancing on his leg, not sort of, running through or leaning over it etc. more notification of the ground moving like dirt puffs, and the leaning of him might make it work a little better.
Keep posting :)

Very cool stuff. I really like the lines and inks. Machen mich ehrgeizig.
The Dance of death from school is VERY cool. Good on ya. I´ll devinetly be back and watchin´for more of yer stuff. Espcially ´cause I want to know how this comic goes on. Das Miststück. German trailer park, huh?
The necromancer is GOOOD. Question though: Everything about him looks very naturally and smooth and handmade stichted together like. But the mask screams "technology". Any special reason or concept behind that?

sorry for answering so late.. but I don't like posting in my own thread if I don't have anything new to show..
Since I'm only working on projects that I'm either not allowed to show, or wouldn't interest anyone in here (type-design) or will still take some time to be finished.. here's a little something I finished today.. two panels of the comic I'm doing for university
hope you like them

Oh my... it's been such a long time since I've last posted... shame on me. Been spending a lot of time with a 3D animation project for university, which has been pretty time consuming so far. Once it's finished I'm gonna post the animation here if anyone is interested.
I've also been working on the last pages of that comic (translation once it's completed - promise).
So far.. the next 2 pages... pencils, some details still missing. Done solely in Painter IX

Thanks for stopping by, good to see you again. Our professor decided to publish the comic we were working on, so unfortunately I'm not supposed to show the last pages. Everyone interested in the comic project can take a look at www.strichnin-comic.de (german only - sry for that)
I've been doing a lot of commitioned work.. most of which I'm not allowed to show. Here's something that's already gone online, so I assume it's ok to post here ;)

Right now I'm spending most of my time on my diploma thesis which is due in February. It's going to be (who would have thought that) a comic, set in the near future where mankind has succeeded in manipulating the environment. I've already got most of the story finished, some parts of the storyboard, the main characters, etc.
Not sure yet, how many pages it will have... probably too many for me to finish till Feb ;) I'll try to keep posting.

Magic Man

Hey! that sketches are really nice, the lines are generally very nice and clean, the anatomy for the most part is very good.
I'd give you the same advice that I've given someone else today - although sometimes I don't do it myself hehe, is to step back occassionally or zoom out and make sure the image as a whole is correct, this will automatically solve strange skewed looking anatomy if you're having such problems.
Also, sometimes your figures look a little strange because anatomy that lies upon the same horizontal lines don't converge to the same vanishing point, case in point, the last sketch, the girl on the bottom right, her breast line and shoulder line do not align up, and the shoulder on the farthest side is further away from her farthest breast than the closes shoulder is to the closest breat.
Now, thats not to say this is an impossible pose, but it nevertheless seems awkward for someone to pull.
You're the illustrator, the reference material is just that, reference it, don't xerox it.
Have fun, m.

Glad to hear that.. you've really improved a lot, keep up the good work! The first comic I did, got published in our university-project-comic book (www.strichnin-comic.de - german only)... since we've been trying to sell them I'm not supposed to publish all of the pages.
My new comic is coming along ok... could be better though ;) I'll soon post some new stuff from that.
Meanwhile, some quick random concepts
