Nacho,

Excellent sketchbook, man. I really dig your style, especially the painted stuff. That speared hound killed me. I would love to see more stuff along those lines, although your portraits are just as fun to drool over. :)

Keep posting more stuff, amigo!

daymn, i feel like i forgot everything about drawing and painting..so right now i'm kinda.. relearning it, getting back into a daily routine. :\

here's a pirate gurrl wip (which is really crappy right now, so i'd appreciate any suggestions on how to continue):

your work is fantastic mate!!

i want to see more - lots more, and something finished too.

There is definate sponteneity in your strokes and i want to see if and how that translates into your polished stuff. What has been your learning process? Did you attend any sort of art school? Your work is very fresh and unique, i wouldnt be surprised if you were a very dedicated self taught student, but i could be wrong.

Care to share?

Steven
November 15th, 2004, 06:53 PM
everytime i see one more piece from you, you make me a bit mor jealous. I love your loose approach and the confindence in your strokes. Not to say that I always keep asking myself how you achieve those colors. But you really could post more often :)

auden100: i'll try to make you smile more often, but i can't promise right now, work and girl are eating my time.

Sanby: thanks mate.

Form: thanks a lot.. i'm self taught. my learning process... uhm.. i saw jonathan wayshack's work about three years ago and i wanted to make art, too. later on i discovered online forums (EP,CA,sijun and a german artforum called digitaldecoy) and i went from copying wayshacks stuff to copying all kinds of anime stuff. it all sucked. i dunno what happened next, but i somehow started collecting drawings and paintings from the internet.. i have a huge database full of the coolest stuff on the net and i guess i learned most of the things i know today from looking at other artists stuff and reading everything i could find on the net. the database is still growing by the way, about 15000 images and i'm adding new stuff everyday. call it a hobby or something.
also i met alot of cool people on the net (and some in real life) from whom i learned alot.
i'm not very dedicated by the way. right now i draw like.. once a week. :(

Steven: thanks pal, i dunno where these colors come from, they just kinda happen. i'll try to update more often. if you guys keep telling me to get my lazy ass moving.. i might just draw more.

here's a superquick oc doodle from tonight, waiting for my favourite show on tv.. (tho it got cancelled tonight because it's some stupid day called "nikolaus" here in germany and they're doing the special-program-crappy-boring-movies-instead-of-your-favourite-show thing on tv. bastards.)

You are getting better.

Avoid the flat primaries in the background. "Broken" colours will serve you better to bring your images forward. The batman pic is particullaly offensive to my eye.

Your line work is exceptionaly good. You have grasped the weight of gray. And this makes the best of your work balance in a most pleasing way.

alright, here's a very personal piece that i did today. i met this girl in a very vivid drug-induced hallucination one and a half years ago..
my friends say i was gone for about a minute and stopped breathing during that time.
it felt like years. i met her just outside the village in the middle of a desert (where i had lived my entire life... or that's what i believed at that time), she was on her way to get water from the well (she told me that). she reminded me of someone in real life and that's why i found my way back into the real world. hard to explain..
well anyways i ended up in hospital where i danced naked on top of my bed, screaming "i am god!".
it was awesome.
i think of her a lot and i'll paint her again someday, when i have the skills to do it accurately.
i haven't done any drugs since, AND YOU SHOULDN'T EITHER! drugs are bad hmkay? (i just had to say that.)

Hey, that mirror sp looks very good! I have tried to do those myself, mostly torso and arm studies, though..You may have caused me to start some more extensive ones - wich is a good thing hehe. Could you share some info on the practical parts? Like how long you spent, how you maintaned the lightning and such? It would be pretty helpful:)
Oh, and about the space boy image...did you channel some Jon Foster there? ;)

I figured i haven't commented in some time..
studying arts did not work out this year but oh well.. my portofolio will be stronger next year.

n0fish, i spent quite some time on the drawing.. about six or seven hours i think. since i only have a small mirror, i did a rough sketch of the pose and did some rough shadows from imagination, then i rendered the torso, and later the legs, since my mirror is so small that i couldn't fit my whole body in the reflection.. it was quite a hassle. i did the drawing in one sitting by night and used a lamp as the lightsource, so maintaining the lightsource wasn't the problem.

sems, glad you like my thread, thanks! cheesecake is the shit.

dadamafia, thanks mate.

mentler, :madchef:
thanks man! i'm digging your anatomy studies, i check out your stuff quite often.

lunch, toastergirls are not in the works, sorry man :)

dorian, what up, still up for OC? thanks for the nice words.

berf, thanks!

jens, i didn't have the time to join you in brussels.. i just checked out the fotos from the miniworkshop, looks like you guys had a blast. maybe next time..

loomer, thanks.. i did way too many head studies in the past, neglecting everything else.. that has changed, tho i still draw portraits on a daily basis, because it's just my way of relaxing. i don't have to think much while drawing a random face, so i'll just draw a few if i can't sleep or after i wake up and don't wanna get out of bed yet. :)

broke up with my girlfriend and had to do some selfportraits to see if i look
different now. i don't.

painter7 and a mirror.

got inspired by a wesley burt painting he did a while ago. had to try these crazy color variations myself and did another selfportrait.
took about five hours.. painter7 and a mirror.

Yay thanks for the comments and nice words everyone! I'll just answer the guys who had questions... I'm lazy.
The mysterious scanner started working again, after half a year of sitting silently on the desk. I guess he needed the move to another part of town to finally make up his mind about not working. Bitch.

ZebzFree, Thanks mate. I'm gonna post some steps of a selfportrait soon. In the meantime, you can go and check out the Open Canvas .wpe files from my webspace.

Jens, yeah he had a huge bright backlight on the foto.. lots of subsurface scattering and weird bouncelights.

Ryu, I finished school a year ago, since then I did civil service (wiping old people's asses instead of going to the army) for 9 months. now I'm unemployed, doing some freelance work here and there.
I hope I'll start studying illustration next year.. didn't work out this year.

So, I quit smoking six days ago. I'm a wreck. So I did a selfportrait this morning, to capture whar I feel like. :/

Hello, nacho. Went several times through your book and now sit contemplating about what I saw and read.
In my opinion you are the best in this forum in capturing inner would of a person in portraits. Drawn by you portraits are the most complex in their emotions and captured state of mind of depicted. I deeply respect that and wish I'll be able to see it myself in people and transfer to paper successfully. I like your art very much, it gave me a lot of thoughts. I took five of you work with me (okay?): the girl from a dream, the hand, the smoker, girl from imagination and this one

Wow thanks for the nice words guys, I appreciate it.
Here's a selfportrait step by step I did today.. hope you enjoy.

The drawing is important for me, if I don't capture the likeliness in the drawing, I'll fuck up the entire Portrait. I flip it alot while drawing, to see if I make any mistakes regarding symmetry and the like.. I think I pretty much nailed this one, I guess it was 70% looking into the mirror and 20% drawing... +10% luck.
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_01.JPG

Here, I block in some values, just so I have something to work with. my colors will change alot in the process of this painting. I don't really start selfportraits with a specific color scheme in mind. I just let it flow most of the time.
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_02.JPG

Some darks...
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_03.JPG

Some more color..
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_04.JPG

Some airbrushing/smudging..
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_05.JPG

Dunno what happened here, this step looks horrible..
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_06.JPG

Some refining:
http://nachodoodles.com/images/stepbystep/sp_steps/sp_07.JPG

Now the colors looked to fucking dull, so i did some layer magic, adding saturation/different hues here and there to make it pop...
Also I added a rimlight, because that's how I like. :teeth:
fin.

Nacho! Great to see you back in here again, bro! Thanks for the step by step! It's very helpful! I love your colors, man.... the paints are always so delicious! ;)

One crit I have is to remember the value scale a bit more when you're working on these portraits. Clearly define some of the vaiours portions of the scale, if you will. You're doing it in some areas but not in others. Like reflected light for example. There's reflected light all over the place in a portrait. Try to be mindful of that. Just hold your hand just under your face and see how the light reflects on the various forms. If you think more so about the highlight, halftone, cores shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow you'll really make the image pop even more than it does now. Just some stuff that I've been really messing with thanks to a professor at school. Just thought it might help ya. Great stuff tho. Hope it makes sense!

Keep it up and update more often! Jeez! ;)

Seems like I didn't post this one yet, did it some time ago for some contest.
http://nachodoodles.com/images/finished/turbulence.JPG

Here's a selfportrait I did after coming home from a long night at the club. It did look great while I painted it, but now that the chemicals aren't screwing with my perception anymore, it looks pretty crappy.
http://nachodoodles.com/images/doodles/myweekbeatsyouryear.JPG

And here is a selfportrait I did the day after, feeling like shit. I am very happy with the way it turned out.
http://nachodoodles.com/images/finished/longwaydown.JPG

edit: thanks zeb for the crit! I know that I tend to get lazy with lighting on portraits, and just use one direct lightsource and one from bouncelight, although the light situation is much more complex than that. I guess I'll try a photorealistic selfportrait some time, just to see if I can do it.

edit2: I can't change the thread title anymore, what's up with that?
