Good work on the anatomy.
I love the lighting in that sketch of the girl on the tree.
To edit the name of the thread you have to edit the title of your first post.
I find it handy when people include the date of the last update in the thread-title.

great progress shown in this thread! You have a great eye for details, but I think you sometimes get caught in those details and your figures wind up stiff...try to find the overall gesture first and work from general shapes to specific ones.

November 16th, 2004, 12:30 PM
hey, you seem to tend to lose interest or patience towards the feet/legs, which turn out less rendered than the body. in any case, wonderful work, the detail and effort you're put in are evident!

Crunch
November 19th, 2004, 05:04 PM
your anatomy is getting much better. try to focus more on the overal form before shading...be patient and dont rush into rendering too quickly...you can shade all day but if the form and porportions are wrong it will still look funny and the shading wont help. its somthing im struggling with as well. also try to vary your line weight more and try to be more delicate and deliberate with your mark making. good luck man there is so much progression in this thread. cant wait to see more.

behemot5
November 23rd, 2004, 07:16 AM
you improve a lot, your way of drawing is good and you take care of muscles when you draw but it seems you do some mistakes on your proportions. Take care of it to and your work will be very good..like Crunch said:"try to focus more on the overal form before shading...be patient and dont rush into rendering too quickly...you can shade all day but if the form and porportions are wrong it will still look funny and the shading wont help"

Oh man, this thread is really great,
Very nice Anatomy studies, got to keep an eye on this. Its great. 5 stars from me.

dude, where do u get your references. I mean human Anatomy, i've got to get some book as soon as possible. I checked out school library and Public library, but neither of them had anything about Human Anatomy, Pulic library had some stuff on human Anatomy, but it was for medicine, eeh, no use.

So, i've got to get some references from somewhere u know, :[
if u know any site, or you'v got any pics, or any studies, or any book, you've recommend so i can check out. It would be great.

thx alot man. Love your style. cool stuff u've got here.

keep em coming, iv started to make paralel lines my self as well,
its a dam good excersie to get more control over you line work
keep on churning out the portraits dude, youv set with a very
good start, see ya in the next update!

P. S. make studies of the shapes of eyes, and try
to observe the model, with alot of care on that area,
if the model is to far away make, some SP and analize
up close the shape of your eyes, you still have this
almond shape trait on the eyes, of your portraits, ill sugesst
you to focus more on that area.

that is all, keep the stuides coming :^^:

Always visualize the eyes as a sphere on a cylinder the corners of the eyes should almost never be in a straight line even if you are looking at the face straight on ____ which you should try to avoid because it is the hardest position to give the illusion of dimension

There may be a couple of demos here that may help

It's one of those threads, where you notice after going through it ... you forgot to breathe.
Icey, your sketchbook and your attitude are pretty awesome !

I'm kinda tired right now, so I'll go right to the C&C ... I'd really love to see more quick studies from you, it's the best way IMHO to nail proportions and work out a lot of other anatomy problems. The ones you have in here are about the pics I like best (the perspective stuff too), because they are very much lively with great musculature.
You also seem (less in the last month) to have trouble with symmetry. Turn your page upside down and/or mirror it (hold it to a lightsource while looking at the backside) to check for symmetry.

I'm gonna check this one out quite regulary !

The drawings from Jan 3rd, and 4th are myt favs,, special Jan4th,, woohooo

About the last update they are great. I like the half robo human thing the msot. I think there was a little prob with the first pose. its a really great pose, but i think, i did see some probs. I think it was problems....

well im not in a place to judge, but i just want to know wheather am rit or wrong, if wrong why? :)

so, i think, ur muscle drawing is excelent. um i thought maybe ur left leg is not in the right place, i jsut thought so..!! :dur:

and the torso, is alittle big, looks like a creature torso, or im still beginner, i dunno what does toroso will look like in this pose, and about the arm too, i think your humerous bone is out of place,,,,,well . I dont want to be mean, and i don like to draw stuff in other's drawing, its really rude. I just wanted to know how does this work.

great stuff man.
Keep it up!! :^^:

Thanks for replying to my thread, Icey. I'm 21, since you asked.

I really admire the amount of detail you are able to get in. I liked the viking and fantasy stuff too. Really I'm interested in drawing from imagination and not reference or life...so I hope you will post more of that.

(To answer your other question: Yes that is the best I can do. I've been working at drawing seriously for about 10 years now, and I've accomplished nothing. I really hate drawing.)

Your figure drawings are looking good, Icey. Your faces has some problems, though, as some of them are a bit flat and scewed. Try doing some scull and constructional studies, turn them around gradually to get used to the shapes. (Damn! I should do this myself!) Also, watch your shading. Remember to pull your strokes in the direction of the planes. Many of my own drawings have appeared terible scewed when all of the strokes was going in the same direction.
You are doing great! :)

I really like the perspective work. Many artists neglect perspective in favor of more figure drawing, which I think is a mistake. Both are equally important.

The good news is all your hard work and diligence will pay off, if you keep this up you will become an excellent artist. The tough news is - it takes thousands more drawings, and even more practice and hard work once you are "there" if you want to be great.

Keep it up! I can see your improvement!

Ryu
March 6th, 2005, 04:53 AM
Nice work, i can see a lot of improvements from first post !
I have to make some constructive crits, hope i'll help :

In some drawings, some errors come (maybe when you re tired, cause, in your best, they are not)

Short legged syndroma ( a hard one to kill, but pay attention very soon, it'll be easier)
Mouth doesnt follow the curvature of the under structure (ie , sometimes, guy is head down and turned, and mouth is like a face view)

Concerning the eyes, the shape is still to work, but some tip : dont contour the eye line. Top lid is almost always darker (cause light ource up), so make it bolder, and lower lid, there is like two lids : one light, one very slightly darker. Watch out, sometime, not under lid all the way round, maybe in one or two spots... Drawing is representation of nature, not copyng of nature...

Hope i helped; keep with the good works, really some good improvement here !

Heyho Icey.

Ryu
March 7th, 2005, 03:07 AM
Good work on the study, and keep going with the concepts,
another good piece of advice :

Check for the vertical and horizontal when drawing axes of the limbs, they are VERY VERY VERY RARELY VERTICAL OF HORIZONTAL !! not to say never !

in your last study, you move a little your leg, the negative space between arm and leg is improved, proportion also (legs little short) ,and you're done !

A tip, even if it sounds hard, try no to go in detail or shading if drawing isnt perfect. Its the hard way to learn... You can asolutely overgo this last advice, it s a hard one, i dont even follow it, i just know i should have !

Cya, and keep working, i see progress !

Amazing sketchbook. I've been staring for a long time. I usually just check out your stuff over at tsofa. I can't get over how well you handle musculature. I love it

That's funny since, it's all impressive to me.

Great thread!

Hey, Icey!

Cool update, friend!

The Raphael studies look great, heads seem funny though. On the left figure, I think the left side of his neck is too long, or the head is just joining at the wrong position... just my thoughts, hehe.

Really liked the second pic! I've been thinking about doing something exactly like that except from the jaw looking down the leg! I like it, good work on it!

Your drawing from imagination seems to be a weak point of yours, as it is one of mine! Keep working on those and soon enough you won't be able to tell the difference between your life drawings and your originals!

Always like your stuff, post some more, man!

March 13th, 2005, 11:42 AM
Great stuff, and thanks for stopping by my thread every now and then :teeth: This thread shows you are very determined, there is alot of learning going on. Have you ever tried developing a drawing from a gesture to a more finished drawing? Remember, the question a gesture drawing should answer is not 'what does the subject look like?', it should answer 'what is the subject doing?' The process is comparable to starting out at the bottom of a pool and then coming up to the surface. I hope that helped and wasn't too confusing, good look :blahblah:

corky13
March 13th, 2005, 12:15 PM
the Hair is indeed very nice drawn but the texture on the faces let them look like stone. (which could be of course interesting some times ;) )
Maybe ,if you want, you could achieve a "skinnier" result by aplying softer shadows to the pictures. right now a grey layer seem to stop suddenly in front of a white one....but there shouldn? t be such boarders....(there also dont exist in the real life....everything is soft... ;) )

IanE

Icey:

I'm with Mr. Mentler on the eye thing, and alos the neck of the woman makes it look like shes got a hollow trunk-like neck cus of the ultra dark space between the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscles (woo, put my Bridgman to use!)

Also, the right right cheek of the man seems to be wider than his left, makes the beard growth look weird, or it could just be where you put his hair grow from...

Keep workin and updating, Icey! Always good work from you so keep it that way! :D

Nice stuff here Icey. Pretty good portraits - nice try at capturing the skin texture with the wrinkles and all - but it could need some work. Also - the EYES are a bit messed and not just on this one. I looked through your sketchbook and noticed that this happens a lot - try working on that (maybe draw some guidelines? ). Full figure studies on the other hand are very good.

Keep up the good work mate :)

Icey, love the winged horse - fantastic.

Looking through your thread is inspiring. One crit I could make in my humble opinion is that it looks as though a lot of the skteches are from references and a lot of figure work (which you are very good with).

Perhaps try drawing other life stuff outdoors - trees, buildings landscapes and, people in their environment. I really need to do all of this myself as well. Also (very occasionally) you take to a high degree of finish a work which proportions are not correct. I recommend the Bargue thread (old middle class thread) for helping with proportions. The method has definitely helped me.

Anyway keep up the fantastic work you already are killing and I know you'll only progress. Hell your better than me but I gotta make comments cause you where kind enough to comment on my sketches.

Fine update here Icey ~~~ Master Bouguereau certainly attained a very high skill level ~~~ much of what is does is very subtle so you have to look hard for the value structure and plane breaks ~~~ it helps here to squint and throw things out of focus in order to simplify the shapes.

You move to the front row!

Odds
May 24th, 2005, 12:59 AM
cool! i love seeing other's studies. i think it'd help you a lot if you could just hold a model of a head or something. i know it helped me think more 3 dimensionally. your studies look a LITTLE flat, that's why i'm mentioning this. anyways, try to pick one of those things up. study it for a few minutes, then try drawing it. keep up the good work ;)

AndreasM
May 24th, 2005, 02:37 PM
I agree with Odds. Most of your drwings suffers from the lack of construction. Also, your shading needs some work. I have mentioned thes before, but... When adding value, SHAPE the form; follow the planes. Studiyng construction will help on that.

You are doing good, but don't get discouraged to go back to the basics for a while. Even though it won't look as awesome and stunning as a fully rendered study, it wil help you alot in the long run.

Nice studies of the figure, I don't really have any critics since other people have pointed out what you should improve on. Just work on your anatomy more and draw from imagination whenever you feel like it. Good stuff.

nice, Ice (hey that ryhmes!)... there's still an obvious line when you do stuff from reference and from your head... but then again, most of us have that... I really dig those horses... those are a pain to draw too...

May 30th, 2005, 03:06 AM
looking good. some suggestions:
try to do some drawings without any shading at all, just lines-vary the thickness to imply weight.(look into prom's bigass tutorial if you haven't already).
continue those block figures like on page1.
do some pages of stickfigure poses.
don't only look at old master's anatomy drawings but current ones too, compare.
see if you can exaggerate muscles like comic book characters do.
ignore all of my pointers since i don't even follow them myself :P
keep it up.

Carnifex
May 30th, 2005, 03:55 AM

Glad to see you posting ~~~~ figure work is very solid :::: make the shading always work with the form :::: it is all about the form <><><> a great deal of the shading that people put in there drawings goes against the structure and unity of the form <><><> I know you know these things but I see you slip once in a while.

Hey Icey!! I really like your stuff here. These are some of the best studies I've seen on here so far. I really like the fact that you give your "sketches" an extra couple minutes to really bring them to life.. Shading is something I really struggle with (that's why I don't do it much, yeah I know it doesn't make sense!! hehe). I interpret your use of shading as you caring how it turns out, you take every opportunity to make it look right.. and I really respect that. after saying that, I feel privileged to have had you take a look at my stuff. Keep up the great work.

Icey :::: Hope exams are going well : good gluts : remember they are not really as round as we like to think they are or as round as we would like them to be : also remember that one side is usually pushed up (the weight bearing side) and the other side is more relaxed. Since it is a little natural to stand with our weight perfectly distributed this situation usually exist to some degree >>> Post them in the pelvis section in SoFA when you get the chance~

Good job with your sketches. I really liked them all. I'm the Romanian girl that wrote you that e-mail. I have a thread too, but it's made yesterday, so I don't have many drawings. My sketches are not scanned, because I don't have a scanner, they are photographed with a barrowed camera, so I can't post very often. But I love to watch others pictures, and your thread and Gilead's one are my favourite.

Hey there Icey. Figured I drop by your sketchbook. I've seen a very wide variety of subjects in this thread. The studies of your torso in the mirror are the most remarkable. I would suggest that you stay away from studying photographs for a long time and continue studying the world around you.

A time limit simplifies your forms, lines, and shadow shapes. Issues concerning proportions and perspective according to your vantage point become issues you are convicted to tackle.

You demonstrate a well-rounded understanding and drive. Everything in this thread shows great desire. Just use the energy that is being exerted on the drawing from photos for drawing from life. That's the best thing I would suggest for this thread.

Hope that helps. Look foward to more posts.

That's the homepage of your (future) website? Where's the text going to go? imo, it is way too much - you want to tease, tantalize and lure people in, not whallop them over the head. :) Who is your target audience? Fellow artists? Potential employers? If the latter, then remember that they, above all, value simplicity and ease of use. They don't want to be overwhelmed with images, they want to know where to go to view your art in a calm and rational fashion. Remember, they're business people...not artists. They don't want to hunt all over the homepage looking for a button that *might* lead them to your gallery or contact info. Unless you're trying to sell yourself as a web designer, keep it really simple and focus on making it easy for non-artists (and even low-web users) to navigate to where you want them to go. Which, naturally, is your killer art. :) So, have a few pics on your front page, enough to whet the appetite. Check around online and find a layout that you like and imitate it. Grids are good - grids are our friends! They make navigation that much more easy. Hope that helps. :)

a front page must be as simple as can be!
stick with one, maximum 2 drawing styles in there
nothing should be done without a minimim project or study....
create a sign of yourown...in stead of your head
i don't understand why you put that head in there....
you invite us to see your work, and yet, your head says: "begone!...I'm sad!" or something like that....
as for the rest of the sketches....they are good, but it I see that the problems with heads [and arms and leg extremity] representations ar still prezent...
perhaps some of you will desaproove me, but if none will tell you what is good and what is wrong....what is the point:):):)?

i have seen your stuff for quite a while and have always had a great deal of respect...I made a few crits for you below:

lovely page of studies... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/phoodjajjfpsd.jpg) if i had to critique anything about it, i'd say that the figure in the upper right corner might need to be a little more seperated from the background. not sure how you'd do it, but in the ones on the upper left it works somehow.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/62066767.jpg
i really like where this one is going, although i feel like the blue whale (or, uhhh, whatever species it is) is a little bit too blue and the supporting mech-stuff too green. maybe tone the saturation down just a little... sure the water's reflected light is blue, but i guess i think of these whales as a little more of a dull-grey blue. not sure this makes sense, but i hope so. :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/IceyLord/f337527a.jpg terrifying but delightful and expressively fun

These are moving in the right direction <> like to see stronger activity around the face and neck on the first dude stronger accent on eyes and mouth and really accentuate the muscles on the neck and try to pull the head forward from the rest of the body <> I personally would have made the head larger in this pic <> your proportion problem with the head is a result of doing the head first <> if I am wrong let me know.

The second figure I like better and little stronger accents on face will really bring it to life.

hey icey,

you seem to have a good grasp of rendering out details and form. But the rendering you do seems a bit fragmatic, it seems like you are rendering out different details but forgetting the big picture.

When you start shading you need to think about a certain lightning setup. It can help if you indicate it with an arrow.

like on that bug centaur thing you posted yesterday. So little indication from where the light is coming, i can see on the knee and the leg it should be coming from the top right of the picture.. but then why is his back so light? The bottom of his back should be dark, there's no way a top light that's on the left could make it light.

Little value thumbnails can help you with this. Or drawing with strong black/white contrast like mignola

mentler
January 29th, 2006, 12:57 PM
Need to get in there and work the nose and mouth dude <> look at the OLD Masters there ain't as much detail there as you thing <> it is about choices <> a few lines can do a lot.

Heya, Icey, :)

Great to see you producing such beautiful imaginative drawings here as well! :rendered: Really beautiful work, and your classical training is really shining through in your sketches. :)

What's missing I think in your digital renditions is the sense of value that you are so good at achieving in your traditional work. All, or most traditionally trained artists struggle to make the leap from traditional to digital / tradigital, and as you know well I'm no exception! :) What I recommend for all new digital artists (or fairly new) is to try a grayscale painting using just 3 values ~ white, mid~gray, and black. This may seem like a baby step, but it can vastly improve your ability to build up form through value, which is always more important than color.

Looking forward to following both your CA and CGTalk threads! Keep rockin'!

Cheers, :)

~Rebeccak

Whoa, that last one is pretty wicked, Icey!! Here are my thoughts, your lines aren't very fluid and things look purty durn stiff around here usually. That's a a crit for you. Take it home. Chew on it. Try to loosen up and be confident in that line or at least fake it better. ;) Another thing is bump up the contrast in those pencils. Make some areas really pop. Everything just seems to be runnin' flat and in a way that seems safe for you to draw. Keep pushin' the boundries, mate. Good stuff.

Hey Icey

This is a simply amazing thread man. Your handling of graphite is simply superb, bro. When I came to page 4 I thought i could give you some advice on photoshop but by the time i finished watching there's very little left.

My only suggestion would be to do some PS works without sketches - it'll make you more confident with the tablet. Also, whilst their not truly tools for painting, your "Burn" and "Dodge" tools can be very helpful for simulating light. That said, I love the sketchy, traditional feel of your digitals!

Keep posting, man, keep posting

Wicked anatomy studies, Icey! They look very good to me!

Also that final color piece looks to me like a very good rendering of a techno-something from the Space Marines in the Warhammer 40k universe!

Way to go and GL with that contest ;)

nuf stuff
great skills with anatomy, not only on human but also on creatures and horse for example, although, the nostrills are missing, (nose resembles more sceletal strukture than what it actually would look like.
Am curious about what Comic-project will turn out like, looking damn fine so far....

Very nice bananas.I like how you made the texture. It makes them real.
May be you could sharpen a little the edge of the closest banana and make more clear the cast shadows .And the bear is very nice.I like your lines :)

Sweet dude! Love those hand and feet - really well done - and the PS painting looks great. As for colours - according to me the crt ones are usually more accurate than the tft ones, but making sure that everyone sees the same colours is not possible. I have two crt monitors and both differ in colour, so I work on one of them only. Hope that helps!

keep up the great stuff dude!

Damn man, you drew those doggies in few secs? That'd be pretty blazing awesome. Hands and feet are great. Your rendering is still way cooler. And solid forms. Last digi is great. Ever try things digitally without contouring? It'd be fun as I believe you can handle it by now.

Your anatomy is looking so good now icey.

My favourite new one is the last one.

Crits -

I think your poses could be more tasteful/natural with better function/purpose. They're not as awkward as mine but more awkard than others.

As well as this, you could try and say more in your rendering with less strokes. For example add some variation by putting in some of those confident continuous strokes that wes is the master of or, add some super faint lines to offset the darks. Also do more accessorising in your individual/original way.

pff what do I know... nothin

Keep drawing, even I can see you come a long way!

Hi Icey, great works as always.
Just a query: your pencil drawings are made by hand on paper (traditionally) or with wacom and Sketchbook Pro ?

blanquish
September 7th, 2006, 03:02 AM
lol, dude, no need to put a penis on monsters,(unless you make it huge)
Jokes aside, this is shaping up to be a nice sb, the only thing you could improve upon is you could up the contrast a bit more.
One trick is to half shut your eyes, and the darker sections come out a lot better.
Rated and done

Looks cool. If this is being used as an outdoor sign for the car wash, I think it needs to be easier to read. I'd say it needs more contrast between the type and the background. Remember for outdoor signage, people are going to be looking for it while they are driving, so you have to go a little overboard on legibility. More than you would for a magazine ad or something like that.

Nice job on the peppers above.

plus.. they have to know its a carwash without even reading the words.. so this rustic grungy filthy bg with a car mixed with an urban skyline isnt really telling people.. hmm they can clean my car and do a good job
