Uhmmm, Gimp is usefull, but it's not at the level of Photoshop... Personally, I hate it(gimp, not toshop ;)).
Artrage is pretty cool on the contrary :) Too bad it has bug with my old pen partner, time to get an Intuos methink ;) But really easy to learn, great feeling, fast, apart from the pen partner problem no bug... And the interface is not as clunky as Painter of course ;)
But I still like my little Painter :p

I know Gimp and it's a friend not easily won, true. It's great for anything in RGB Mode but hasn't CMYK Mode for professional printing. Anyway, it's free, it's mighty and it's a good tool for those who don't want to steal software they can't afford.
I have't heard of artrange yet. Where can you get it?

I personally prefer the brush engine of Gimp. My Photoshop stuff did almost always look too artificial.
Didn't have the opportunity to paint in Photoshop often though.
But looking at existing speedpainting threads I think the Photoshop brush engine stinks.
Artists have to find good approaches to get a not so artificial look.
Beginners can't do that and are used to the Photoshop feel.
There are too many fancy things enabled by default. It is too sophisticated.
Brushes like the weird leaves brush are just as evil as lensflares IMO.
I think Gimp is even better for beginners.
Kinda of topic I guess ...
