heartbeat:

hello! - nice drawings, I especially like the frida kahlo pic. you are -so- in the right place to grow this talent. I think i've already seen you posting in fredflickstone's anatomy studies and such, which is great! you're doing the right thing trying to learn all that you can.

the ideas you just posted recently are also very interesting. I'd love to see more! the more you share, the more people can offer assistance and see where your strong points are and where you've got growth potential.

keep working and keep posting!

best,

maldrin

Well these are some gestures. Each 15 minutes.I am not sure if they are gestures if not done for shorter time.
These fast drawings are harder to me so any advices will be welcome

I really like the last picture of the shoe, very good shading skills and has dark to very light values. I really like the studies you have working on, it helps alot to get proportions and everything right.

Keep up the good work!

That last painting lacks value. Make it b/w in photoshop and then check your valuerange. It's tiny.

Post more :)

This is a pear from life the first one longer and the second for less time and I think it's worse.I turned them in grayscale after ended them to chek the values and it seems that the value range is not so good again. And the colors are different from the real thing.I also tend to take more time for details than for the big shape which is more important. And somehow the edges make it flat.

Hey heartbeat,

Pears!! hehe, nice. I did mine yesterday too. A great sketchbook, nice mix of studies and medium. I am quite in love with your hand studies and still lifes. Love the computer desk one, the values on the cup and the pen is spot on, looks very real. Though I must admit the shape and stuff looks a little skewed as you mentioned, but we all know how hard a mug is even though it looks simple enough. Though I wish there were some more highlights to give it a shine and a bit more contrast.

:) beautiful studies and keep them coming. cheers,

johnny78 - Thank you , I will :)

bumskee - thanks a lot for your comment :rendered: , I appreciate it.
I should get more acquainted with colours. But drawing is also
important.

I did this little copy of Honore Daumier for about 20 minutes. He has very interesting lighting:

More hands after Loomis:

And studies of the manikin after Loomis.I intend to make more and than to try to do them without reference to help me get used to proportions of the human body:

looking at this page from top to bottom an obvious and marked improvement has been made, your skills have grown fantastically over the last year and a bit. I really like your nude studies but you seem to have the same problem I do, you feather your lines when drawing quickly, try to make sweeping single gestural lines instead of breaking curves down into lots of little lines.

November 19th, 2005, 09:26 PM

young paddy1 , thank you I think my progress is not quite big but I stopped drawing somwhere in the middle of that period but hope I'll have progress in the future :).About my lines I am a little afraid what it would like if I put all down bravely so I guess that's why those little lines show up.And also I didn't use eraser.

bumskee, thank you for coming :),I see all the images don't know what is wrong.I saw that the cloth didn't look ok, but didn't know why.It is always useful when someone else tells you.So thank you :)

Heartbeat,

The single line sketches, the quick hand sketches and the last cast experiment are among my favourite sketches on this forum. If i could just decide what you must focus on i would say go with the fast, spontaneous works cos you shine on those.

Keep it up mate.

Thanks, bumskee for the comments,I should do some anatomy studies,in fact now I am doing some from Bames for the center of gravity in human figures.I should do studies of the separate parts of the body I think they will help but the main problem in the moment for me is that I still can't get the proportions right. And I am also trying to stress the gesture part ,not that it works :) but I am trying.
So some life figures ,sketchbook stuff and a still life for now:

From viewing your drawings from life and your figure drawings you can see very well. Your renders in your still life drawings are amazing. I would only say that the line quality from your still lives and figure drawings are quite different. With your figure drawings try making bolder lines when your contructiing the the form of the body. maybe experiment with loose gestures. Just get crazy with it don't hold back. I struggle with this also. great stuff

Darktwin,
Thanks for coming back :)
I recently started using larger sheets of paper and it somehow helps me to draw less lines :).I try to think more about drawing not just copy.

So another gouache study face and a sphere.I flipped the face and it's not good again .I should do one with only general forms without any small details:

Mayby a tip when you are painting. Before you start, find the lightest spot on the subject. A lot of times there's only one brightest spot. You have to conserve your lightest value for that. Another thing you can do before you start is try seperating the shadow side from the light side. There's a pretty big distiction between the two, especially when you're working with a strong spotlight.

for example in this image

mir

Jens, thank you for the advice .I am also trying to do this when I am drawing cause I find myself shading more just by looking at the object and not always thinking where the light source comes from which is my darkest part ,how dark it is compared to other parts and things like this.So thank you.
I added some more value to the bear ,it is not separeted like it should be in values but next time I will try to do this from the begining:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/Mishkata/Gouache_05.jpg

Also here is a head from last sunday.About 3 hours .I was looking for some head planes and such things and trying to imply them.I was also trying not to put unnecessary values cause I tend to do this:

Been keeping really busy I see, improving lots, too.
Your form and value are really improving, the life studies look great.
The lemon might now exactly feel like a lemon, but it has very good form, it reads well.
One area you should pay a bit more attention to is the direction of your hatching, try to follow the form more closely. If you just follow the form, it will read correctly throughout. Even with correct values in place going in a single direction or just not following the form can really flatten a surface.

SirGreenSock,
Thanks ,I should pay more attention to the direction of hatching,I even draw without hatching which I suppose is not good.I haven't done very long studies recently cause I tend to render and I need more drawing I think
Color try in gouache from a living apple :)
Well,I turned it now into gray scale and the value range is not quite good. And while I was doing it I didn't know how to build the higlights.I tried in different ways but it didn't work. Also while trying to make more dark and light parts the color became muddy:

Great improvement since the beginning, gosh this forum really is very inspiring for my own work.

Back near the beginning of the thread you asked why people tend to use larger sheets of paper for life drawing, I believe its because its easier for your hand to flow across the paper. When you draw on A4, your hand movement is very cramped, so for gestural drawings, i personally find the best results are using large newsprint.

How do you find gouache?? How is it different than acryllic?? More difficult>??

mir
March 19th, 2006, 06:29 PM
Chichigo,
Thank you for reading through my thread and thanks for the explanation,I now use larger paper and it feels better the only problem is with scanning :[ .
About gouache -I haven't used acryllics so I can't make a comparison,sorry.
But I find gouache very nice medium, not that I have used it alot only a little. But when it is dry you can again make transitions with a wet brush .At least I didn't know this and I was a little surprised.

Two head studies from life.I looked at the drawings of people from watts atelier and reminded myself to look for the whole and to find hard and soft edges but it need more practice:

And this is a quick copy of Sargent.I've been looking at his paintings for some time his watercolors are so nice :}
This turned out quite wrong in proportions:

I scanned the life drawings very ugly in parts so I'll try to take pictures of them .For now this is a picture after Zorn. I wanted to make it carefully in tiles but from the beginning I rashed the things and also I did'n want to make it smooth but I made it and the main thing is that again I displaced the features:

Some messy watercolors.I start with the thought to make them clear and then just lost the idea
Reference from internet .I sanned it in two parts that's why there is a line in the middle and the hand I know it seems like a finger is missing :bashful:

And this is a study from ref. ,after reading kincept tutorial although the pictures can't be seen , the information is quite good.I should read it again an practice more.I was trying to limit myself to less values but when color appear it becomes a little messy so without smudging at least and some more thought in it compared to the watercolors:

woa, lots of hard work here! you seem to be doing the right things and your work has definently improved. All I can say is that you should follow the form more with your rendering strokes, You are getting better at better at it, but sometimes it seems flat, especialy at edges of shapes.Try to think of the strokes as a sheet covering the object, and in perspective... kind of hard to explain I guess but I hope you understand :P Your renderings definently not bad though, its just those hard edges that need to be smoothed.
Keep up all the hard work!

hum, I can't see the latest updates.. weird haha, but in any case, this is quite a nice SB you've got here, I really like all the life drawings, definately, a huge step in the right direction. Very nice lines. The rendering seems a bit "slopy" from times, but that'll come to you. Remember that shadow dousn't allways shape the whole "body" when rendering, light allso shapes, why it can be a good idea to leave some areas untouched when rendering the face, for example.

Love the life drawings! Very sensitive, but with a great sense of volume and mass!

Your images are quite large file sizes, 100-200 kbs each. Saving for web in PS would make this book load way faster! Each pic could be easily lowered to about 30 kb without any apparent loss of quality.

I know rendering is the fun part, but when it comes to life drawing, try your best to nail down the inital drawing first before you get to rendering. Rendering will not save a drawing from propotion errors ect....If you render an area nicely, and you know its wrong, you aren't going to want to fix it later. Also try to break your figures down in more simplified shapes.

Smitherins thanks for the critique. You just caught me with that rendering thing.I am trying recently to stay away from it.May be more knowledge in anatomy will help to make better figures .Sometimes it seems to me I am trying to prettify the things which distracts me from my goal,so may be it will help to have a clear idea what is the purpose of the thing I am doing

whoa hey thanks for posting in my thread - it's always nice to know people are watching!

hmmm if I had a critique it would be to watch your proportions, particularly in faces. An easy way to check these is to use the length of the nose, the forehead plane from top to bottom, and the distance from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin as your three basic measurements. . .if there's a drawing error in a face checking these in relation to each other will usually reveal it.

hope this helps, we're all here to get better. . .thanks again!

wups sorry. . .I also wanted to say that you're waaaay better at fast sketches and gestures than me. . .and doing master studies like you have here to augment sketching practice is a REALLY good idea - I personally think master copies are the strongest and fastest foundation to build in your art studies. Very cool to see someone working on them!

mir
September 4th, 2006, 02:25 PM
jkior- Thank you very much for the comment :).I will watch out for proportions.I need to watch for them not only in faces though. And my quick gestures and drawings are quite shaky and hesitant I must get rid of my fear

I messed the perspective of the still life when i started the rendering but I saw it when I flipped it at the end.

Some life drawings. The first is a quick digital. And the other are in gouache .I made myself something like a value scale to avoid painting in the middle range values but yet I did it somehow.

haven't visited for a while now ...

really nice hand studies :) on the gouache pieces, you can add accents of darker tones and brighter highlights in certain areas to increase the contrast. Before actually doing it, run it by PS before committing to it.

OldNoobie, thank you for visiting again. As for the gouaches, I made a scale and wanted to use only the light and dark parts of it but in the process I failed.I should try again maybe.
Life drawings.I am posting them in other thread for more critiques so here I am repeating one or two for the record. And some other stuff:

the life drawing is looking really good :) and the elephant is great, though the legs can be a bit thicker in my opinion
