Ok, so i finally got around to scanning my sketchbook. I was gonna scan the last three, but i took a look and the older stuff is already way out of date, so i only did the last one. Im gonna lay these on ya 10 at a time, so the slow modem peeps arent hit so hard, so check back for more older work here and there.....

The plan is to make this a daily, or semi daily, and PLEASE crit the hell out of this work! I know theres a lot of mistakes im consistently making over and over again, and i either cant see em, dont know how to change them, or just need a good kick in the ass. Thats what all you lovely folk are here for. >:D

so, here goes nothing.
:$

This batch are all done from life, in the street, in pencil or pentel ink brush pen.

nice to see you posting your sketchbook here.

Wow, this is some really nice work, and i don't think you should get any bad crits, it seems to me that they are all studies and great ones at that. I can see that you understand how to build something and i am sure you can render the hell out of something if it were in color. I was so influenced by seeing some of you work that i had to see what your site looked like, but it seems like something is wrong with the index page? well, keep posting your work and i will keep looking at it.

wow, great stuff. i really like the brushpen stuff. the woman in the chair in brush is my favorite. i ve found it kinda hard to get comfortable with one so i always like seeing people who are confident with there strokes.
some nice pencils too... but pay more attention to line wieght in the pencil stuff. there are some thick/heavy lines that seem awkward. as the form falls away from the viewer or overlap, the line should be lighter or thinner the farther the forms are from the viewer. sorry if that doesnt make any sense. hope the crit helps.

keep posting.

Wow, replies already!

gee...

Jokisalo: Thanks man, yeah, its hard to get people to tell you what youre doing wrong!

Rollb82: thanks man. Yeah, my site doesnt actually exist yet. Ill get around to putting it up one of these days...

chaotic logik: thanks, i plan to!

flex mathews: hey man! yeah, i looooove my brush pen. It took a while to get used to, but its helping me correct my bad habit of scratching 20 incorrect lines instead one one correct one. still working on that... as for line weight, its been an ongoing struggle for me. All the way back in my first year of school, my teachers always yelled at me for going too heavy. Bad habits are the hardest to kill, but im working on it! any suggestions on how to speed up the process? you seem to have line weight down pat....

will post more soon! promise!

That's some good work. But there's something about the lady in the chair that was bugging me. Then I realized it looked like I'm looking at the profile and a 3/4 view of the back of the chair. The lady looks fine, but the chair doesn't look right in perspective.

My favorite page is the people in the beach. I like how you did the hair on the left most woman with the shades. She wasn't wearing a bikini top or did you just leave it out? lol :perv:

If you love your brush pen so much why don't you tell us about it?

Layil
August 25th, 2004, 05:15 AM
SirRon: good eye there. the chair is wonky, but the problem with inks is once it's down, it's down, so i decided to just finish it, even if it was wrong and nail it next time. the chick at the beach wasn't wearing a top. They rarely do here in spain.
glad you like the drawings!

Here's some more!

Hey Girl!

So good to see you in here, about time too!!

Nice life drawing work - is it a refill brush pen? (gotta get me one) I love the lines it makes, pens are great for making you work harder and with no mistakes.

As with all people here, keep it up, look forward to seeing more (and some more robots!)

Hey guys!

Mentler, Elastic and Pichuerca: hi there! nice to meetcha and thanks! Ill be updating, so check back!

Molly: Hey babygirl! Got some good stuff going on in your sketchbook, but i wanna see what you did in berlin! lucky thing, i was dying to go... well, next time! I started using my brush pen after seeing Coro's amazing sketchbooks. I have a bad habit of scrathing my lines, and making too many where one will do, so i started inking to help break the habit. Problem is, then i forgot how to draw with a pencil! So, i switch back and forth now... I recommend it anyhow, just to try something new and plus, the feel of the pen is just addictive.

ok, so, here we go, the last batch of older stuff... some enviros done from life and some random stuff out of my head.... enjoy.

and these two are from tonight. Im doing illustrations for a multimedia project featuring tolkein and gaudi. These are initial idea sketches, laid over the photographs were gonna use. Heres the first one, more to come. I know the figures not perfect, i drew her all in a go, planning to go back and retouch and correct if i decide to go with this idea.

Comments appreciated!

Hi everyone!

so, tonight was sketch night here in barcelona and i drew 18 sketchbook pages in 4 hours! thats got to be a personal record of some sort. Granted, not all of them were worth looking at when all was said and done, but needless to say, my nazi "must be productive at all times" inner voice is sated, at least for today.... Ive scanned the 14 pages that didnt totally suck for ya'll to see...

but first: Comments!!

Liam.c: danke

Prostrate sunrise: wow, that is a compliment, coming from you! Im trying to stay loose on my imagined stuff, but i have a tendancy to freeze up when confronted with a "finished" assignment, or trying to draw something specific. I dont feel confident enough in my skills yet, and my mental image database is no where near big enough. As a result, youll see that the stuff draw out of my head will be alot stiffer than the life stuff, which i just channel without having to think about very much. In fact, the less i think, the better i draw, usually... that whole right brain/left brain thing i guess.. but it sucks for doing assignments! Im working on it....... *sigh* >:| thanks for the crit though. LOVE your stuff btw.

Sir Ron: oh my. *blush* thanks. Though its funny you say that cause my portraits all look like different people. lol.
I use a pentel brush pen, both the big squeezy one and the little one.
been meaning to do more sp's, but cant seem to find the time. :^^;:

Roger: thanks rog. The project is a dvd documentary about the parallels between gaudi and tolkein's worlds. They were both quite eccentric apparently. Interesting stuff. Im just doing the drawings....

steak-tron: thanks! you gotta learn the rules before you break them n all that....

Davi: thanks dav. Working on it, working on it..... :^^:

and now, what youve all been waiting for.... *drumroll*......

today's efforts: all from life to one degree or another, some with a bit of creative licence thrown in on my part.
my anatomy blows. must practice more.

Thanks for sharing yor sketchbook! I've also been checking out your daily portrait - keep at it! Love your live studies, lots of personality in there.

very nice indeed!! you have a great knowledge of the facial bones and can quickly sense the main characteristics of a face! the only thing Id suggest is: try and get some more detail into your drawings...some of them are unfinished, i know, and whilst drawing fastmoving people its not possible, but on the others, some detail would make good even better!

Layil
August 30th, 2004, 10:23 PM
mentler: thanks, ill do that.

Leopoldo: Hey buddy! yeah, i want able to make it to berlin. Been sick all summer and broke as a result. But San Fran is definately on the to do list! i figure i can make the $2K i need to get there and back in 5 months, no?
ive started doing spods again, though not on a nightly basis. Im tryin to keep up with them though, they make such a difference, and now ive started tackling color too! eek!

ODT: thanks! Believe me, getting likenesses is something thats just now starting to come to me. Youre absolutely right that i need to do more long, detailed studies. Unfortunately, all my friends are too hyper active to hold still and im too shy to randomly ask strangers to pose for me. (ill hafta get over that if i want to use android and marko's "im an artist, sleep with me" pick up technique. ;) ) Fortunately, the fall semester at my drawing club has a portrait session, so ill get my chance to to fully rendered portaits, yeay!

that said, Here tonights humble offerings: some more life drawings, and some elfies and wizards from the LOTR project. Trying to stay true to ol Tolk's vision whilst putting my own spin on things. These are still studies. Once i pick which sketches i like, ill blow em up, fix all the mistakes and ink em.

enjoy!

Flex Mathews; thanks man, always glad for the encouragment.

not a whole lot lately, working on a short film till thursday doing art production and ye gods i am tired. Im learning a lot though, so its a worthy investment of a couple of weeks, even if it doesnt leave me much time or energy for drawing.

heres the only scribble worth posting, out of my head and semi anatomically correct. Must study more....... if i can flesh out the concept to be something other than the generic demon guy weve all seen 10 bijillion times, i may even attempt to paint it. well see...

Just a suggestion to get out of the generic demon guy concept, ever thought of having overgrown bones sticking through the flesh? or having more or less than 2 legs and arms? I have a friend who loves drawing demons and he puts out some pretty unique stuff.

Your SPs are coming along very nicely too btw

And thanks to you I'm using my brush pen a lot more often now. But I have a hard time working straight out black first without having some kind of underlaying gesture. So I just spend about 10 seconds with a really light brushpen and then going over it with the black. How do you do it?

Looking forward to see more from you. :)

great updates Layil!
those life draws are getting better. More solid proportions and weight + confident line line quality. Keep pushing it.

I'm liken' this last character. If you paint i suggest you use the hard edged brush with solid colors first then do the subtle blending on a ground. This has worked better for me recently.

Hi everyone! I went out tonight and ended up drawing some more, so here ya go.....

but first, ive some responses to catch up on...

Flex: Thanks man! I hafta do some more brushpen stuff, im falling out of practice.... im diggin that fat lady too. shes awsome to draw!

endregan: heres some more tone for ya. :)

Sir Ron: Keep it up with the brushpen man! It takes a while to get the hang of it, but ive found its helped my image retention. People never hold still for very long, so im attempting to develope a photographic memory. Heh, its gonna take alot of practice, but i cant imagin why it isnt possible over time.

Im still working on perfecting my knowledge of anatomy before i really start to play with it, but if ya look at the more recent stuff, im starting to do more stuff from imagination. All that life drawing seems to be paying off. Yay!

And thanks for checkin out the SPs. Ive been neglecting them lately, poor things. Ill try to do another one soon. REALLY need the practice, my color is still nowhere near where it should be.

Burning eyes: Thanks and welcome! Hope you come by more often! check out the SPOD thread too, if ya like. (Its MY thread and if i want to shamelessly plug myself i CAN so NYAH! )

Nagasch: Your pencils in your hand i hope! Thanks man, glad ya like it! :}

Steak-tron: thanks! Im working on it, and having a blast! Starting to play a bit out of my head, to see how much ive actually learned. Still needs work, especially my line quality.... I dont know if im ready to paint anything yet. BUt then, mayhaps ill give rusty's Tut a whirl....

Hurricane: Hi candypants! Yeah, i still scribble alot. I seem to do ok when working directly from life, (the fat lady, for instance) but im still unsure of myself and end up hesitating alot when drawing out of my head. The mental image im drawing from isnt clear enough yet, but its getting there! I always harken back to something somebody said when discribing how markoD draws: "its as if he were tracing an invisible drawing under the one hes doing" (or something to that effect.) Thats essentially what im aiming for.

The clockwork Angels are one of my pet projects, a comic script im "writing" in the moments when it claws me in the face and demands i pay attention to it. Someday ill be disciplined enough to actually sit down and get the whole thing down on paper so i can get it published. Much as i love telling the story, id love to just be able to hand someone the comic!

Id love to see some of your angels! Now, lets see that sketchbook youve been hoarding all month without scanning! Its almost full, i hear, and though ive gotten a sneak peek, i bet all these other guys are itchin to see it too! Wheres that sketchbook thread, baby, cmon!

"buns of fire" LOL, im gonna have to come up with something to top that. Hey, that might make a good concept........

Now, enough talk. *drumroll* a night of drawin in a smoky bar surrounded by alcoholics! Id be one of them, eccept i cant drink! Oh well!

Great hand pages! even if you don't want to draw figures like hogarth it's something everybody can benifit from. I put those books away for a long time and realized how great they were after I got "serious" about my anatomy.

The disciplined regiment is a must if you're really going to learn this stuff too, with the way that last set looks you'll bust heads once you get through the bulk of the other parts. Good study pages like that can really help for a warm-up before the other stuff.

I like that pic you made for your friend, but I think the best part is the line-work. Don't be shy with the strong color starting out because you can always dull it down. I'm only saying this becuse the coloring in yer dress/corset are fuzzy. still a great drawing.

Anyways, great work. Even tho the DSB is flooded keep posting!

Hi people
thanks for swingin by all of you. i know i havent been postin regularly and its been getting rather lonely over here....

Hurri: thanks dollface. youre paintings are coming along at an insane rate. id hate you but youre too cute. ;P

steak-tron: thanks. this is suppose to be "eyes" week, but i havent gotten around to doing any this week. lets see if i can do some this afternoon. Yeah, hogarth is great. If you copy him literally, its inaccurate, but the way he breaks down the forms makes it really easy to remember. then you just have to apply it in a more realistic fashion.

Bojee: youre welcome and likewise! ill get to drawings buildings asap. Funny, cause i was looking at some sketches of architecture i did last night and thinking i should do more....

Yoell: thanks man. im rather fond of the fatties too. ;) The fairies alright, but id have to add some twists to the concept to finish it. its too bland of an idea where its at. not impossible to do though, ill add it to my list.

alright, heres some stuff from yesterday. Im working on some b/w fetish/erotic themed designs for tshirts and to take to the erotica festival in london next month to see if i can sell some prints. Ive got about 10 designs, of which im estimate about half will make the cut.

Heres the first three. Im going for a loose woodcut/scratchboard look. These may get a make over when i finish the series, i dunno yet....

enjoy!

Hi peeps

Hurricane: Hiya wonderpants! Thanks! I thought about going the cat route for cheetara and decided against it. Her skin markings (more visible when painted), eyes, ears and claws are all feline. I debated on the tail, but i didnt want to make her into a furry, so i left her more humanoid, in the spirit of the original design.

Mentler and Bojee: thanks! working on it...

Roger: thanks man. Heh, i know i know. im actually planning to go to the drawing group this week... whether i get there or not is another story....
the life drawings are done in my sketchbook. havent drawn on the big paper in a while, too much of a bitch to scan.

Jens: thanks!

alright, heres the composited finished pencils for the TD8 entry. Redid the side view of the head, much happier with it this way.

I begin painting tonight. :^^;:

These figures are getting really strong, I can see them rubbing off on the sketches too. It's cool that your adding accessories to some of the reference shots. Adding things like tatoos, skin-tight clothes, or lines in general forces you to examing the 3d surface - and it's fun:)

I'm going to do some crits because I think you want to hear em': some of the forearms are looking a little long. Try and focus on placement of joints before you do any detailing. Measurements are good to do at this stage. When I start a figure I try and gesture out the whole thing quickly and make notes of where the joints are. Which brings me to the next thing; Joints are important to understand, limbs are just segways between them. These joints look good but a few more marks to indicate substructre might punch em' up a notch.

Love the rest, I did portraits like that with a caligraphy sharpie allot during the summer - good stuff! Cheetara looks great too!

Hey peeps

Petridish is down, i think theyre changing servers or something. the pics should be up again soon....

in light of my previous message, just letting you all know that i AM drawing (i swear!) but im swamped with work and cant post anything until thursday.....

Steak-tron: Thanks mate! YEAY CRITS! we liiiiikkke crits. I completely agree- i dont have full understanding of the way joints are made yet. I shall make it a focus for study. :) My forarms are long, and i always find my lower legs look odd too (for the same reason perhaps?) but i havent the foggiest WHAT im doing wrong.

Any ideas? Any one else? Mentler- oh anatomy specialist?

Bojee: thanks man! got any crits too?

Dont get me wrong, i love your guys' praise, but i need more constructive critisism if im ever gonna stop making the same mistakes over and over.... (though by all means keep the compliments rolling in too! ;P )

Layil- Sometimes when I don't leave a crit it's cause of time and It's easier to focus on what i think is working. Since i can't see any images at the moment I'll just have to work from memory. One of the things that jumps out is your Cheetara piece, I liked it a lot because it seemed more thought through than some of the other pieces, this may have to do with time constraints but it really made stand out a lot more. So maybe sticking with a subject matter a little longer so we can get sense of where your trying to take it. That's one of the reasons i like your portrait thread so much cause it's more of body of work in one area. I'd love to see you playing with traditional color a little more cause I think it would enhace your digital work. You use a lot of neutrals in your your SPs, I think it would help to combine that with some purer color to help them turn more. A combination of warm and cool. When dealing with traditional paint it's a lot harder to keep your paints clean working with those colors and I think it would give you some clues to how to enhance things.
I'm not sure if that's what your looking for but maybe it's a start, I'll try to be more thorough in the future. ;)

Bojee: You rock!

I didnt mean that you HAVE to crit everytime- i completely understand the time restraints thing- but it IS GREATLY appreciated when you do take the time. :) I was speaking to someone who has a very popular sketchbook on CA and was discouraged because nobody was critting him, just telling him how much his work rocked, which is great for morale, but doesnt teach much- to the point he was actually gonna shut his sketchbook down and stop posting! Im hoping i talked him out of it, but i do understand where hes coming from and i know hes not the only one. I give many many many thanks to those of you who take the time, (and almost as many to those who dont ;) ) and will do my very best to respond in kind.

That said, a personal thanks to Bojee for your crit. I agree that my colors tend toward the neutral- this was a persistant problem when i was oil painting regularly and a large part of the reason i stopped ( and keep procrastinating going back to it)- but ive been saying how i "should start painting again" often enough that its time to shut up and DO it already. It is, after all, the only way to learn. Ill take your advice into consideration for my next SPOD (any day now) and i hope youll stick around long enough to see the results. Im also starting to do more sketches in color (which ill post as soon as possible) and other doodads beyond just the usual doodling. I want to start putting out more finished work of the calibre of Cheetara- and better!- not only because i need the discipline, but because i need finished work to get paying jobs!

Anyone up for an OC session, please do PM me and well coordinate timezones- id love to watch how other people work, exchange skillz and learn a bunch while having a good time.

till soon-

Layil- Some fun stuff in the last couple of posts. :) All right lets get into it, ;) :), First the new color piece, I'm liking the warms and cools in this one, compositionally I think it's hurting cause she's almost dead center and its hard to tell where your trying to lead the eye, I think if you moved her over slightly so she going slightly off frame so that you use her right arm and the knife to lead the viewer back up to the face, your going to need some other element to complete the triangular comp. Something more in the foreground would be cool too, you have sense of mid ground and background but not foreground. Papa Bear, Mama bear, Baby Bear a teacher of mine used to say. ;)

The falcon girl and the enviroments are my favorites of the drawings, I think you handle enviroments really well a could get quite a bit better at those pretty quick, you have good eye for detail, it would be fun to see you paint more enviros, or at least just add a bit of color to the sketches. I like the way you draw women too, you seem to pay more attention to detail with them, nice subtle things going on. That should probably be good for start.
Oh yeah nothing wrong with nude women on pillows in my book either. ;) How is the gallery scene in Barcelona??? I didn't really find any there, I saw a few museums but that was it. :) Great work, keep it coming. ;)

Edit: I really liked this bottom right drawing too. :)

Hi Guys!

Bojee: thanks!! Im not planning to rework the color piece cause i dont think its interesting enough of an idea to put any more time into. those are juicy comments though, and ill definately keep em in mind for the next one...

I always hated drawing enviros- had a thing against straight lines- but now im finding them to be really fun, even though im only now just starting to get the hang of them.... Youre right that i draw women better- im more familiar with the anatomy- being one and all- and i guess since i can feel what its like, its just easier. i see this tendancy in other people too, i guess its like that thing where the people you draw always end up looking a little bit like you. Im working on my men though, id like to be able to draw them out of my head and not have them look like aliens... lol.

The gallery scene in barcelona is extensive, but im not really in to contemporary art for the most part, so i dont really know much about it. Every once in a while ill see something i like though. It tends to be more of a random occurence then something i look for. dont have the patience to wade through all the crap to find the gems i guess...

Liamc: thanks man, still got a long way to go, but getting there!

hi again

falconer WIP: still in the block in faze, playing with composition and colors and stuff...

Theres something wrong with her proportions- especially her legs, but i dont know exactly what. help?

Bojee: hows my composition looking? i tried to taking into account your advice... and im stuck with her skin tones- i think part of my problem is all the values on her face are too close, but i dont know how to darken them without making her either green or purple. anyone?

Shes dressed all in brown now- its supposed to be leather, but its gonna have bunch of colored embroidery and leathertooling on it by the time its done. Oh, and the yellow dots are a town in the background....

ah, and one more thing- anyone know how to change the color of scanned line art in photoshop? I know what can do it selecting shapes and fucking with the channels somehow, but i dunno how. Id like to be able to incorporate parts of my original pencil lineart into a finished painting, but i dont want it to be so obvious and black overlaid- id like to be able to play with the color somewhat without having to redraw it all digitally....

more tomorrow, time for bed.

Layil- hey girl, a quickie ;) , I'm liking the cafe drawing cause it's bringing you into the enviroment, you see what's happening in the foreground and the other stuff in the background supports that.
On your painting, I'm still liking the figure itself and I'm liking what your doing with the color for the most part but the composition isn't very dynamic yet, she's still dead center like the other color comp, it's hard to figure out what she's doing cause of the direction of her eyes. A falconer is maybe watching the skies or looking out over the valley, maybe she's a scout, or maybe she's protecting the valley, the more you know about the back story the more it suggests in the pose. Maybe play with scale change and overlap, I could see if you rotated her a little bit and came in some she could be extending her arm towards the viewer, the arm and the Falcon larger in the foreground leading you into the painting to the girls face and the village in the background. Also a little thing that I thought I'd mention is I don't think she'd be leaning on the point of her spear unless she had to because she wouldn't want to dull her weapon. I hope that helps, i know it's a lot but I know you wanted feedback, it's a good start, and your color is getting better quickly. Keep them coming. I'm looking forward to what you'll come up with next. ;) :teeth:
