Stephen - how to improve? By contiuous practise! But you're doing that already.

Your sketchbook pages llok great - but I'd like to see some different styles or media used by you. This might help you to improve.

BTW, do you know that your pics load painfully slow? I'm not sure whether it's because they are so large or deviantart is so slow... However, from time to time I just take the pain because I'm curious about how you are doing ;)

Hey man, I think you have alot of very cool sketches here.
It seems that you have alot of little idea's and are somewhat lazyly thinking of the next, kinda doodling your way along.
With some of the larger works, like the multi bodied man thing sitting at the PC's... seems to me that you had a basic concept but when it came to the finer points.. even some of the main perspective issue's etc you just got lazy, or couldn't be bothered trying to give the whole piece a consistant polish. Yeah?.
If so I know exactly how it is, alot of my works have area's that arn't up with the rest of the sketch. I'm trying to overcome that now.
Doodle pages are really cool, nothing wrong with visual brainstorming of you will, but maybe you should try setting more goals, or aim for a specific thing with your pic and stick to it.
I have found threads of this board eg the 'Demon' thread in the sketching section started by Davi really helpfull. I was having trouble trying to think of something to sketch and was doodling nothing inparticular when I saw that thread.. now with something specific in mind, a goal, I have produced something that I'm pretty happy with.

I'm not sure if I'm on the right track here, but I sense that with no direction your sketching may be kinda unmotivated.

Hope that helps!. Feel free to get me to explain or help in any way.

Stephen your sketches have so much style, i like 'em a lot. They look SO familiar though...were you by any chance sitting in on a class at Watts last sunday? I'm looking! :D hehe, great work here..... One thing I noticed is that you have alot of drawings that seem to be heavy contour lines, and then a lighter tone to shade, but otherwise, there isn't much tonal variation. I would like to see some that are more like your paintings... you've got alot of nice shading in those! The 2 side by side portraits that you've got are absolutely beautiful. Hope that helps a bit :)

HungerArtist(kafka?)-its not hard to fill pages, i just dont like to waste paper. Size is standard 8.5x11.

Jnorish, thanks for all the comments here and elsewhere.

question, I actually have more pages than this but havent shown them, maybe five times this volume. But do you think its good idea to just post all the pages from the book regardless of quality, or just keep it as is with only a few scans?
Its time to push myself so that i can grow along with CA. I do not wish to be such an amateur any longer.

Stephen - perhaps you should ask special questions when posting your pages instead of posting more. Then we could try to help you better.
I like your style and pages a lot and I think you are already far away from being a noob. Of the last two pages I dig the way should delicately shade the faces with the ball pen. Are you mainly drawing from life, ref pics or from your mind?

jester, alrite good idea ill try that. most drawings are from mind usually just scribbling along not sure what i'm drawing till its more fleshed out , its why its so messy at times. 4 this one, figure's form the mind, thumbnail heads from pics

I had a friend who carried around a small notepad with him and wrote down concepts he thought of during the day...I think it helped his creativity.

Also, a video instructor of mine once said "Only work on an idea that leads to the next". At first it sounds sort of paradoxal, but if you start with a basic idea you can branch out from, you can build on it.

hope that helps.. keep sketching

dude your sketchbook stuff is awesome. I really like how you fill up every page. Mine are usually mostly white...it's hard to find things that will fit in odd-shaped holes. I'm a noob but the only thing I can suggest to improve yourself is spend more time on things. If you get a sketch you really like take it to another page (or a larger sheet) and really work into it. But definitely keep posting.

Pitty my sketching has been taking a back seat. I'm still doing a resonable amount, though more is always better.

Thanks for asking by the way.. didn't know anyone would remember. :)

Street sketching. Speed, its alway speed!!. Frustrating i know, but you'll get used to it. Forget about trying to make it look like the person you're drawing, just think placement, get the shapes, the angles, the positions. Forever get better at those and of course over time your ability to make it look like the subject will come.
.. and hey looks to me like you've got it pretty sussed anyway man, these are bloody sweet!!

Hiya, I think your sketching is fantastic by the way. You have all the skills to make a more resolved drawing, but I think you share a similar problem I have. You need quick fixes. You'll draw things like you said, with no real idea of what you want to acomplish and the next time you pick up the pen you start another random study. What you need to do is take a look at your previous work and pick out some characters you really like, ones that got your imagination going. Then build them a story. Ask yourself, who are they? what are they doing? where do they live? Then things like enviroments and compositions will fall into place. Keep doing your quick fixes but at the same time return to a project that you can work on slowly and resolve. Like I said before, you have the skills, just use refs and the anotomy and form will come naturally. I hope this helps, but basically I just wanted to give you a vote of confidence. You are already 90% there.:D

man i'm so impressed by how you fill each page! and your stuff really is improving with each post.

i've noticed a definate lack of action poses, and i think that may be what you are looking for to make that jump to proffesional looking work. i'm going to pick up this book, (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0823015777/qid=1058769960/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_3/104-0491043-7098321) as soon as i have a spare 30 bucks (CDN). hogarth gives pointers on the human body in perspective and in action. also, you could rent some martial arts/action/sports films, and pause the movie at some good spots for practice at extreme action poses.

great work, i'm pretty eager for a time when i can fill up a sketch page with stuff this good. :)

You just lack the confidence. But no matter, just keep posting. Really enjoying seeing your work and brainstorming. Nice stuff :chug:

Jeff Gran
July 24th, 2003, 01:30 PM
Hey, maybe you'd have the confidence to finish a drawing if you used a PENCIL, that way you could erase the mistakes and make it perfect. You do really good studies and visual brainstorms, but think about it, how long do they take you? If you put your mind to it and did prep studies and thumbnail compositions and spent all day on a drawing, I bet you'd do some sweet pieces. The question is, is it worth all that time? Would you improve faster by doing that or by staying with the quick studies, where it doesn't matter as much if it's "wrong"? I feel the same way you do, though... like there's just SO much more to learn first. But, what I keep hearing is that art is about facing the unknown. Keep doing things that you've never done before, even if it doesn't work the first time. Like using different media. ;) :D

Iiori
July 25th, 2003, 12:59 AM
I agree with the others. ^^

Though I do know a little bit about drapery. You probably already know this, but just remember the anchor points on a person when making folds and creases. That helps a lot.

Also irreagular creases and folds look better than uniform ones.

Well Im not sure if that helps, but Im trying. ^^ If you want I can scan some really helpful diagrams for you that I learned from.

Mr. Scifi-It's true i can do a drawing and call it a finished one, but when i say "Finished" drawing i mean there's a certain look that i'm trying to go for that I haven't been able to achieve yet, also there's a lot I don't know yet about anatomy and various things that i need to go learn.

Mr. Gran -yeah i gotta do a long study soon. But pencil? You can pretty much do everything a pencil can do with pen plus it's more direct. I do use one now and then though. Like your sp's by the way.

endregan-thanks glad u like them. WhenI say i don't have the skill yet I'm just being honest with myself in that there is A lot i still don't know and need to learn before i'm at the level i want to be at...but then again i suppose there's always more to learn.

you are inproving to my knowledge, your studies look like they are paying off. its good to sketch with reason, i think your anatomy study was very good for you. cant wait until you run out of ink though, i'd love to see you express your anger with a messier more frusterating medium.

Nice! I love that latest creature. I haven't been replying all the time but I've been following your stuff, and you're definitely improving. You should totally start playing with that white to highlight your pen sketches, it's an awesome look. what is it you used, a white colored pencil? man I gotta get me a toned sketchbook.

somehow i love the way you fill your pages.
it looks so urban-tribal-chaotic. the feeling of a crazed out big city in the future. blade runner or neuromancer - style...
especially the last page looks great - i like that new paper, too. nice composition of that awesome creature in the middle (although the white dots look a little strange and "left alone") and the circle / diagonal bar behind him.
keep going :)

word! :D

i like the colours on this one. especially that blueish-black of his robe and the brown-red of the background...
i don't like the pose of his arm that much, since it's nearly identical with the contour line of his chest, which causes the overall contour to be less interesting...
also, maybe i would have moved the whole...focus area? picture area? sorry, not quite sure what's the right english word for it...that what you are drawing :)
a little bit more to the right - so that the main person is a little bit more on the left border and there's more space on the right side - this way you create a greater...feeling of vastness...
just some suggestions...

Yo man wassup!
Nice ship designs, I can see you excelling in that real quick.

Your rendering is definitley getting alot better and the last few also show a much better understanding of anatomy, you just have to watch your lengths.
For instance, this last fella, depending on how you look at it.. his arms and legs are too long or his torsoe is too small.. as with the head.
If I were you I'd be getting a hold of the basics first.. quantity over quality. Just my opinion.
Keep going hard mate, looking forward to your progress posts

Stepehen, most of the values are in place and it is a finished sketch, scan or photocopy your thumbnail, enlarge it and go another round on it. Or scan it in, and add color to it in photoshop. Since you have the shape and cut lines its just little things to add if you want to. Shapes are reading well tho. Hope that helps.

Stephen, that last one kicks major booty, you should take it to afinish and see wat happens. Just scan it into photoshop and play around with it. My only thing is to work on the elipses at the joint where the shoulder meets arm. Now i am inspired to draw robots!

Hey Stephen,

This is good stuff man. The perspective on that spaceship seems a tiny bit off to me but I dig the cut lines you put in there. That robot is cool but where are his feet?!

As for finishes, I'm struggling with that too. I suppose it depends upon what is keeping your from finishing. Is it technical or do you just get bored with a design or seomthing else?

See ya in class.

lookin pretty good, id just work on your perspective and line work, uf u want to be more precise, use drawing aids, its the way to go for a really tite piece, the only people that can do real tite drawings w/out aids are like feng, doug chiang, spinefinger etc. but they have like years and years of practice so use drawing aids.

That last sketch looks cool Stephen, dont worry about his head being to small or the stiff pose, its a great concept, later on you can put him in a dynamic pose and make his head bigger..this is great. Sketches arnt meant to be perfect mines are never perfect thats why we do them so we can mess up and get better.
