Do these have to be drawn from life observation, or can they be done from photo references?

I had posted these earlier but didn't really get a response so, I give it another shot. These are all done on 18 by 24 newsprint with charcoal, and their all from life. These first 3 are all 25 minute sketches.

critwise...the stuff looks good...however, you are over simplifying your lights and darks...it leads to that "watts atelier" look which is successful....but i do think that closer observation would lend to more modelling of your lights or shadows which will bring strength to your forms..spaces...and overall strength of image. your stuff flattens out a bit because you are simplifying so much...it has an illustrator feel to it more than an academic study feel....be more precise with your values and such. avoid devices and gimicks and just be honest about what you see.

if you can trick me into thinking it is done from life...it doesnt matter. but honestly this section should be devoted to life drawing works.

Self portrait, 2-3 hrs I think, using a mechanical pencil and white charcoal on toned paper.

Thanks for the crit jason. I personally tend to try and stay away from using alot of half-tones, but maybe I could have used some to bridge the lights and darks a little better. I like keeping things simple and don't like rendering. And I am a student at the watts atelier, but you probably saw that one coming. heh. Thanks again, I'll try and get some more up.

some great work going on here.....
jokisalo: i`ve seen that first lady, a domai girl i think, i have her profile as well...but your last one i like a lot, only thing her skin looks a little blotchy, watch how you render skin forms, makes her look like she has very bad skin in places....but the overall look is lovely...
tinyhands: good work dude, as mentioned perhaps a little more detail in the forms would help....but nice work anyway
lucasgraciano: love these, great form renders and you`ve nailed the poses but not sure about the guys ear, can`t quite make out what might be wrong there.....but great otherwise....

the scanner has done its usual trick of overexposing my artworks, something which i can`t seem to correct in photoshop....still, you get the idea....
i wanted to try and get a different look to the last one, get the usual depth of contrast i usually render in my works but with a twist....anyway, i keep trying....
