well i have a mac osx and an epson scanner and no adobe photoshop :^^;:

Did you try opening the scanner software manually rather than just pressing the button on the scanner? You might need to download some new drivers from Epson's website depending on your version of OSX and the software that came with the scanner.

You should be able to export your pictures to almost any graphics application, even Preview if you have nothing else.
