Another in my series of 'Dune' designs...
I'm not used to paints like this, but it was fun to dive into,
Fremen Raid on the Smuggler Factory:

some thumbs I did a while back exploring some of the basic designs of the smuggler factory...

Those thumbnails are amazing cool.
I think you picked a good design for the factory although I really like some of the other thumbs.
The colored pic however...
I am not actually very partial to it at this point. There doesn't really seem to be a raid other than the fact that there is an exposion. The robed figures just seem to be moseying on down to the site.
There is also a lot of dead space... and I realize its a desert, but its I think it isn't working for the picture at this point.

Sammy, Sammy... these are awesome. It's too bad really... cause now I have to kill you and take your powers. Which sketchbook is Sammy's? It's the one that says Badass Motha' Fucka' on it. Awesome awesome work. As is all your Dune stuff. Can't wait to see more. Peace

I do agree that the figures dont seem to be hurrying like you think they would...

edit: oh, and post a little more, get yer ass on the frontpage!

hey sammy
great piece, anybody who illustrates ometing from dune is pretty much the man. the only thing i could see wrong with it was i wasnt sure what fired the rocket. Im assuming it was the spaceship closest to the picture plane, but it is on a course heading ina direction that doesnt spell out to me that she fired it. Maybe if she was swooping in a long arc over the factory or something. the colors and rendering are awesome . maybe next time we could see your version of the sarduakar. or a mentat, i love mentats.

Very nice. Your thumbnails are very good as well.
There are some minor color glitches in the main painting but I guess you don`t wanna hear them as the artwork seems to be done and finished. :)

Very cool, Sammy. You have an awesome vision for Dune. Certainly much more original and compelling than that of anyone who's made a movie adaptation. I've read all the books and by far, I think your designs do them the most justice.
I really like the pallet you've chosen and the mirky sense of depth you've incorporated. I really can't think of anything to critique so more props to you.
edit: I thought you might dig this. These (http://www.fred-katrin.de/giger/dune/dune.htm) are various designs by H. R. Giger for a Dune movie that was never made. Suposedly they wanted Salvador Dali to illustrate all things relating to the Atreides while Giger Focused on the Harkonnen.

Great stuff! I love the feel of the fremen warriors, they are ghostlike in their movemnt. *Neph: I believe the rocket came from the right hand side of the picture, maybe a fremen RPG style launcher. Keep em coming!

Thanx for the crits guys, I appreciate it since I have a hard time with paints like these.
I know now what I need to work on :perv:
Once again I failed at conveying that 'aquard Fremen walk' ... I was worried they'd look like they were tripping over themselves, so I went easy on their stances....
I should've had more balls when drawing them as to look more in action
In more description: it's a scene later in the book, when a Smuggler Factory is dropped off (by the flying ship, and ornithopters) ... in an instant a Fremen Rocket blasts it as the Fremen unveil themselves and rush it ... that's right before Paul found Gurney.
Exo: That's awesome, I've seen these images of his but had no idea they were for a dune production.

Hi man,
You have a great intrepretation of the Dune saga. I loved your epic Dune "Sketchbook" thread, the amount of work and the quaility of it is impressive.
Th only crit I have with this image, is the fact that it looks "wet", the cool colour palette, I reckon, does not really work with "Arrakis,
The desert Planet".
Cheers

wow your a busy guy. this is great stuff. i feel like the freeman are to bunched and obvious...in the books they were more about stealth, not running down a hill in the open.
the concept sketches are great, good job!

Impressive work. I enjoy the perspective, lighting and the action.
I feel wrong when i critique people because I lack the skill to come to even 10% of what I see, but here they are, from the unprofessional eye:
1. the factory seems to be just squarely extruding from the sands as 1 structure, almost like i'm playing a real time strategy game and i'm placing buildings *poof* and here's a building... which is sort of how it works form the dropships, i guess, so maybe this point is moot :P
2. what bad weather said about the foggy aura... the blue seems clashing with the idea of Arrakis the Desert Planet.

I think the blue, as cool as it does look, would flow better with the pic if it were red, but it's still awesome. I like the thumbnails alot! Very interesting to see what poeoples' planning looks like. Also I love the flow of the people all rushing to the base thing
