Hello!
Looking for any other fellow Portlanders to start a local ConceptArt group.
I didn't see one listed, so please forgive me (and tell me where!) if there
already is one.

If you ever make it up to seattle you should stop in to one of our meetings until yours gets going.

There's at least one other portlander here, Green.
I don't know any painters around here, though - most of my friends and I are cartoonists, 3d modelers, that kind of stuff. I don't think we'd really fit in.
Glad to see Portland being represented here!

Ours consist of painters, concept artist, cartoonist, 3d modelers, texture artist, story writers, and etc. We all bound fairly well and no one is above another, so in a sense we all fit in with each other, art is art so it's all related, no matter the medium used.

I agree, just wanted to say you were welcome anytime. Friends tell me that portland's got a pretty cool art scene so maybe you don't need to travel anywhere. Ever been to the compound, one of my favorite galleries down there.

I live in redmond now and I think I'd be selling myself short if I didn't try to attend.

Shoot I would be down for some life drawing. A friend and I have started a weekly get together down here in Corvallis where we meet up, draw and share with one another. We've got 3 consistant participants so far, and I just made some flyers to spread around campus to try and get some more people to join us.

I definately agree Don, for me though, my schedule is kind of tight being the very end of the term and all. Next term though, after spring break, us portlanders should try and get the ball rolling!

Howdy, I’m new to both Portland and the forum, though I’ve been a lurker on the forum for years. I’ve been going to hipbone studio for life drawing http://www.hipbonestudio.com/ but that costs $8 plus tip so I will definitely be coming to a session at backspace. Hope to see some of you there. Do people usually draw on laptops or paper at these sessions?
requiem
March 7th, 2005, 01:16 AM
I've heard of hipbone but havn't gone yet. I still get free figure drawing every wednesday fromt the art institute, but I could use a changeup of models. Maybe I'll check that out AFTER I graduate next term. as for the laptop/paper question, most people do paper, but that's like worrying about whether everyone at school is bringing a lunchbox or brown bagging it.
Till everyone can get together I'd be interested in seeing some work that everyone has done. Don and My work can be seen at www.bunkart.net (http://www.bunkart.net) and don has a rather impressive sketchbook thread here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=26557)

Nice sketch you have there! it does my heart good to see someone do foreshortening and not screw it up! You really did a good job on that left arm. I wont be at backspace because i've got class, but I'll start after this term is over.
and as a side note, perhaps some day my lack of descretion will get me beat by sharp edged, metal lunchboxes.

i went to backspace for life drawing the last two weeks, but both times the model was a no-show. it seemed like a cool place other than the lack of a model. i'll probably give them one more try. but until then i'm going back to hipbonestudio (http://www.hipbonestudio.com/htmls/modelist.html) maybe some of you would be up for a drawing session there. they have four to five sessions a week.

daaaaaannng man, you've got skills. I think i'm in the presence of greatness. that's a fantastic painting. You should really start a daily sketchbook here. Yeah, I draw Ruth all the time she's great. This is my last week of school, and after this term I only have one more class till I graduate. :) I'll start going to hipbone starting after this week. Maybe I can convince Don to go too. one look at his daily sketchbook will show that his figure skills are getting weak. WEAK!!! (kidding)
I'm more of a 3d guy than some amazing 2d artist, but here's a couple of recent figure drawings. #1 (http://www.oraclewoods.com/bunkart/ruthTwisted.jpg) and #2 (http://www.oraclewoods.com/bunkart/recliningWoman.jpg)

hey brkofdon, i have a bfa in illustration from cornish. though i have yet to use my degree to get any work as an illustrator.
i wasn't trying to be mean, i was only making fun of the fact that portland has a different name for every area. you could travel three blocks and go from beaverton, to aloha, to bethany, to tanasbourne, to hillsboro, and they're all portland in my opinion. but don't mind me i'm new here. sorry if i offended you.
i really like your sketchbook btw. very well rounded.

i'm going to go to a long drawing next thursday at hipbone (http://www.hipbonestudio.com/) . it will probably be packed which meens you may have to sit on the floor but the model is a good one imo. the atmosphere is kind of stuffy and like a library though. backspace would probably be better for hanging out and sketching. or just shooting the sh*t. btw did everyone except brkofdon requiem and i move away from portland. haven't heard from anyone else in a while. mabey i just don't seem like the kind of person someone whould want to meet in real life. :perv: would it help if i said i'm a foxxxy young girl? you don't know that i'm not.

cthomp: yeah, portland pretty much rocks. It's probably the most laid back city in america. Apparently there's a bit of a drug problem, but what do you expect from hippies? The art institute is a pretty good school too (depending on who you ask I guess) though really expensive. Both Brkofdon and I graduated from there.

Hey is portland a cool place. I am moving up their in late september welcome cthomp! I've only lived here for a year but Portland seems pretty cool. The "Portland Local Artist Group" on the other hand is pretty lame. We never get together. :P
I spy on the seattle group occasionally to see what i'm missing, it makes me depressed. they get together and sketch all the time, and do cool things like battle the brits.
...Sigh
I like the animal studies in your portfolio cthomp. Portland has a good zoo, maybe we can all go and sketch animals some time.
anyway, welcome!

Thanks for the heads up Jetpack, definatley gonna go check it out as soon as my internship ends.
I will be moving back up to Portland for good now that I have graduated (/cheer) sometime with in the next couple weeks.
As far as Portland goes, I think its a pretty awesome place to live. I was born and raised here, really easy going city. I've never been to the AI, but I have a friend who teaches some drawing classes there.
I agree with Orcatraz, we Portlanders do need to get together and draw sometime, it would be nice to make friends that have similar interests, I've been surrounded by engineering majors for the past 6 years.. yikes

It's been a while, but are people still interested in starting something for real? 'Cause I'm in Portland, and am totally down.
From what I know of, we lack a good drawing scene here. The two larger art schools (AI and PNCA) don't communicate/compete/collaborate (why??), Hipbone may be packed sometimes but isn't very welcoming so I'm told, and most monday nights at Backspace (open lifedrawing session 7 to 9) nobody at all shows up for the whole two hours(!). So sad.
We could at least show up at Backspace monday nights, at least one of us, show some support for the unpaid model. I plan on doing that myself. Other things - such as zoo trips, sketch jams, whatever else - would be cool as well.
Who's with me?
Orcatraz
November 27th, 2005, 12:50 PM
maxoid: Every time I went to backspace the model was a no-show. It would be cool if we could get a large group of us to all show up at backspace because we would probably be the only ones there. Just the CA group. We could even hire our own models and do costumed drawings as well.
maxoid
November 28th, 2005, 05:18 AM
@ orcatraz: The model didn't show? That's eveb more sad! Seems like if anyone came, they'd be the only ones there, let alone an entire group of people. I'd guess it'd take at least four or five people to try make it most weeks to really get something going. That's not really a lot, should certainly be feasible.
Nice thing about Backspace is, it has a lot of space to use. Way more than most other coffee shops. Bonus is the snacks and distractions...
I'll probably be down there tomorrow night, if I can swing it, and every subsequent monday I can.
