try this guy ... he works for valve Dhabih Eng (http://www.sijun.com/) .. he doesn't seem to have much on his site but I know that he is a lead artist for Valve Software. Maybe look around for his stuff.

valve's art director is viktor antonov, he's responsible for a lot of the rad vistas. dhabih's an awesome texture artist for mostly characters, and does a lot of the effects [water, glows, sprites etc] he also did the images on a lot of the ads like this one: http://hl2.ogaming.com/content/images/gallery/albums/concept/hl2_concept_16.sized.jpg !

viktor's site: www.vulkanbros.com

some concept art:

ted backman, creature designer did this one: http://hl2.ogaming.com/content/images/gallery/albums/concept/hl2_concept_10.sized.jpg and a few others

Sloobers with delite - thanx for the hotlinks!

Wow, now I really want this game!

HL2 will prolly be the only game besides UT2004 I buy in the next year or so.
Well if HL2 comes out in the next year or so.

just in case anyone else is looking for an answer to this, heres an interview with the writer of a "Making of HL2" type book, apparently, there will be just under 1000 images in it.
