Hmmm...i just used the macro settings of my digicam...nothing great...a Canon Ixus 400...but you can get close up to 3-5cm to the object...

Yea..actuallay it was for the photos section...i know that many people with digicams love to play with macro-shots :) even more when you're interested in creatures...so this is a very good place for this thread...

If there will be many posts we could open a thread in the ref-section with a link ti this one...

These are wonderful, yet creepy pictures everyone! KEEP EM COMING! :confident

btw, have you guys ever checked out: the National Audobon Society field guide books. They have this great book on insects and spiders. here's the link to Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0394507630/qid=1093482182/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-7560818-2511954?v=glance&s=books)
You can even buy used books for under 10 bucks...what a deal! (dont forget to look at the pics inside, though you'll have to skip through a few of the technical pages of insects and such, to get to the goodies...muahahaha)

Everyone has put some great stuff on here!
here's all I've got right now and I think most everyone has seen these, but I wanted to participate. I need to scan all my macro stuff in. I'll be adding more stuff soon.

This is a Catidad (member of the locus-loudascrap family) and it is leaving its old beatle body and speading it's wings for the first time. This sequence took about 2hours start to finish before the bug's exoskeleton hardened and he was able to defend itself from me and fly off. But I don't think it was scared of me becuase I saved it's life from my barking biting dog. And I guarded it. it returned the favor with these great pix. Enjoy guys...

Ok, people... techniques, equipment... spill it. Anyone using an f1.5 lens in reverse on a 49mm coupler ring? I haven't tried it yet, but I hear it's a pretty good technique. Not sure if I can do it with my G2 though

The following are pics of a spider in my back yard that I've been keeping my eye on over the course of the last couple weeks. I found this huge spider and became obsessed. She spins a new web every morning, also writing a new zig zag each time. Anyway, as I kept track of her, taking photos of her periodically, I noticed her body was getting very big (hence, why I'm calling this spider "her", plus I researched it a bit, and a spider with these markings is a female black and yellow argiope - aka a big huge garden spider).. anyway, a few shots, in order, from two weeks ago til now.. *notice on the last photo (this morning), she's not big anymore.. Yikes, millions of little spiders soon to be running around!

*notice on the last photo (this morning), she's not big anymore.. Yikes, millions of little spiders soon to be running around!Yep, that's an Argiope Aurantis, otherwise known as a Black & Gold (Yellow) Argiope. I've got one on my deck lately. She's skinny now, huh? I'd keep an eye out for an egg sac, which may produce 300 to 1400 babies. and yes, she eats her web every night and builds a new one. Go out there around midnight and you should see her chomping away :rendered:

What set ups are people using for the macro insect photoshops?

I am currently looking at getting a digital camera specifically for insect macro work and would like advice on whats a good set up to go for.

bfly
September 16th, 2004, 08:47 PM
krispee - that spider is probably about 3.5 inches around including the legs. She's a biggie.. and she at first looked like one of the yellow flowers on the bush she's on.

blind - I looked out for an egg sac, but couldn't find it. Now, alas, the mama spider is gone.. I suppose it's like Charlotte's Web when she "had to go away". Too bad. It was a lot of fun watching her. I would've loved to watch her eat her web too. Maybe next spider. I did get a chance to watch her making her web in the morning (very early), and also wrap up flies and bugs when they got caught in her web. Very cool. You should post some pics of your spider. Love to see em.

mjp - I have a Nikon coolpix 4500.. not specifically for macro shots. A great camera, but like I was mentioning above about the spider capturing bugs.. the camera couldn't focus because she was moving too fast. I also have a fisheye lens that takes some really cool shots up close.. Otherwise, I just go out and shoot, because with digital you can shoot a ton, and just get rid of the ones that don't turn out. But I'm not the one to answer about macro.
Anyone? Anyone?..

I have no clue about for which set up to go, but these shots all were done with cams about 200-500 $ i guess...if you really want to make cool insect macros you'll need some extra equipment like macro objectives, which have to fit on your cam...

You should post some pics of your spider. Love to see em.Will do, bfly... I've only got one really decent shot of her, out of a dozen or so attempts. I'm not a very good shutterbug. But, I'll post it when I get home tonight. I haven't looked in two days, but I think she's still out there. My wife's about ready to freak out because I refuse to get rid of it :[

I used my Canon Ixus400...i think it's also called S400 in US...

4 MP, Macro 5 cm

It's ok for some Macro-Snapshots, but i want to make really sharp and detailled ones, for that the cam is not good enough :(
