Some questions:

I have been thinking of giving digital painting a whirl. It has some very alluring
advantages, in particular the ease of making alterations in comparison to
traditional media. And healthier compared to oils.

The one disadvantage that I see is a similiarity in the overall feel of digital
media, in particular rendered images. I often cannot tell the difference
between artists unless they have a strong individual drawing style.

The questions:

Is this something others see? And is it a problem?

Is it no different than the way that drawings in pencil have a similiar
feel, or oil paintings have a similiar feel?

Is it more a culture thing, artists being affected by other artists in this
new medium?

Any thoughts would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks,

a good artist will flourish just as well with digital paint as he would with physical.

the meathod is a tad different but the theories, compositional laws, boundaries, and properties are the same.

i personally think that the bigest benifit to working digitally, is that you will learn twice as fast as you would with physical paint.
when your not having to purchase paint, canvas, and brushes,, and you dont have to wait for paint to dry,, and you can save periodically or undoo any mistakes,, you will find yourself experimenting a lot more than you normally would with physical paint...

i agree with lono. digital painting gives you the hability to go straight to the point, in no time.
the other very important factor that has been very decisive for my own art, is the fact that there is a true frontier between your hand, and the painted surface.
it gives a very positive distance between your creation and your hand, in other words, it allows you to put both eyes outside of your painting area, and therefore, you're even more capable of analyzing what you've just done.
virtually, it's like having your brain directly connected to a painting surface, as you do not look at your hand position, or movment.

the only link i can observe between digital artists is probably the fact that they're representing a community throughout forums, obviously more than before, as the technologies for digital art and even forums are growing and improving.
however i do not feel any important similarities in artists styles. you stated it yourself:. "I often cannot tell the difference between artists unless they have a strong individual drawing style." the answers is written within your own words. you've got to be original from the start.
i guess it has nothing to do with digital media.
it will not stop any novice to get inspired by masters but is it really different than in the past?

Thanks for the replies. Concept art is a really fascinating genre, with a lot
of interesting things going on, this site has been quite an education.
