Before you even think about adding value (what some people call "shading") make sure your proportions are correct. Sight all of your angles and proportions multiple times (and mark your sight lines on the paper) before being sure of anything.

My last figure drawing teacher commented to our class that she never made a mark without checking four different ways. (How it lines up vertically, horizontally, and two different diagonals) She then (sarcastically) added "It's amazing to me to see that my students are so sure of where their marks go, while I have to check four times before making a mark."

One that I know is: Your eye width is the width of between your eyes. As goes for the width from your nose to your toplip. The end of your mouth should be in the center of your eyes and your bottom lip is a eyewidth from your chin. Also the eyes are in the center of the head. Not towards the top. As some start out doing.
