Stomp/Smudge Stick/Tortillion?

I dont care what yah call them all Im interested is how to use them, and use them good.

Now how do I properly utilize this the tool for shading? like what type of pencil should be used with it? Im just confused on how to use it properly and wondering if there is anything out there that shows how to use it?

Get one and practice.

They're about $4-$5 for 3 medium sized ones and trust me 3 of them will last you forever. They're so cheap you've got nothing to lose by buying some. I use them in about every sketch and finished drawing that I do lately.

As for what pencils you use, I like using them with either a 0.5 or 0.7mm Mechanical Pencil. The smoother the paper, I think, the better the effect. On larger pieces though, be careful not to smudge the piece with the side of your hand while working on it. Put a piece of scrap paper under your hand to lessen the unintentional smudging.

Really, I've never been 'taught' per se how to use them, but practicing is the best way to figure them out.

I've never used them...

I've always been discouraged from using them, and I've never really wanted to use them either... The effect that they produce is undesirable for me. This is a personal opinion obviously, and I'm not going to say you shouldn't use them.

However... There's plenty of ways you can use them. One technique I saw that I thought was interesting was done by one of my friends for a life drawing assignment.

He took a bottle of the powdered graphite (or was it charcoal? Whichever) stuck the torillion in it, and proceeded to draw normally. It produced a neat feathered effect. He used it for the entire drawing... I think it was like 6'x6'.

But yeah, just get one and experiment for yourself. There's really no right way to use a material... Well, with exceptions....
