I drew this last night at a figure drawing session
I used a red and black prisma color pencil and white-out pen on 12 x 18 newsprint.

this is quite nice andrew. i like it mucho grande. i think i'm gonna try out this red and black prisma color pencil stuff tonight. it has a cool effect.
how long do these take you though? how big are they? Cuz you have a pretty well developed self portrait EVERY night... you either set aside 6 hours a day or are just REEEAAALLY fast!
the face is great... the beard is the greatest though. I love the texture on it.

this was a 3 hour pose, and between breaks and smokes I spent about two hours on it, most of my portraits are done under time limit pressures but I was able to relax and concentrate on this one,
prisma colors are a great drawing medium, but there is no erasing with them.
on this portrait I drew the entire face using only the red pencil to get all my perportions and features locked in, once I was confidant with the placment of everything I spent the second hour with the black pencil, defining all the darkest areas like the eyes and nostrils. that way I had much more confidance working over the underdrawing.

I wanted this portrait to have a softer polished look to it so drew with only sharpened pencils and kept alot of extra sharpened bakups because prisma colors can dull very quickly. thanks for the feed back.

Andrew, that portrait is stunning. I keep revisiting this thread to look at, I need to save it to my hard drive now :D Wonderful work. I've been sketching with prismacolor pencils the last couple of weeks, mainly with the black and terra cota, but they are nowhere near the rendering of this. Nicely done man.

These are so awesome Andrew...wow...so cool. I love the rendering you did from the figure drawing session and also that guy you know from the Saloon...looks fantastic. That is really awesome too that you draw while waiting in line at the bank and stuff...I'm glad I'm not the only one that draws strangers hehe. It's inspiring to see someone as successful (in digital art) as you still plugging away and drawing from life. I take big inspiration from that...just wanted you to know. Great work.

The first one reminds me of Hogarth's colour scheme in his Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery book. The others are - beautiful. Only in the last one the neck area is a bit too thick or maybe undefined. Looks like you got carried away drawing thos dreadnoughts (spelling???)

Art makes me a better person too, I would feel like a shell of a human being without it,. I am usinf rececled sketchbook paper, and mostly 2b standart pencisl and black prisma color pencils.

That's a nice little effect with the white outline. gives it a good quality that makes these pieces feel finished. From the subtle effect that it gives in the first one to the stronger more impacting effect in the last one. I like it!

These are awesome...how long do these people hold these poses for you?

Usualy not very long at all, I sometimes have to bribe them with a free drink, I would say that after about ten minutes they start to fidigit around, I average around 15 minutes for a smaller 5x7 inch portrait like these, sometimes if I have time I will go back and work a little from memory but I have a bad memory so that usualy dosent help much.

That's very fascinating...drawing strangers. And wow...in only 15 min...The eyes of this woman "Megan" are piercing. Makes me wonder what her story is. Keep up the good work Andrew.

Megan is a poet, I traded her a poem for a portrait, she is my friends older sister, , very free spirited, the second portrait is a guy named mark , I went to highschool with him, and I have watched him fall through a downard spiral of bad decisions.he is always in and out of jail, he has a dark heart filled with hate and fear, his nose has been broken seven times. I try to keep my distance from him, and try to stay on his good side if he even has one. He insisted I draw his portrait and because I never refuse a portrait oppourtunity I acomidated his request
it wasent intentional but there is a certian irony that both these portraits ended on on adjoining pages in my sketchbook.

This is very interesting Andrew...honestly you have captured the poetic nature of her eyes. I really can see it in her face...something that is subconscious...but you captured it. Her eyes speak a thousand words to me. And I also find it interesting and ironic that Megan looks right through the canvas to meet my eyes head on...but Mark peers down away from my gaze. Sometimes truth is seen better on a canvas I guess.

i am fascinated by the way you tell the people's stories in the drawings...
the composition of megan's portrait, her pose, the shading lines look so soft, peaceful and such... she must be a thinker.
mark, on the other side... angular lines, everything's edgy, the lines tell about the loads of brawls he's been in... no way round, this guy has seen jail from both sides.
mia's portrait is a great one, too.

I really enjoy your sketches of Liz and Zafros. Black, Blood/Rust Red and White are symbolically moon colors which have been used together religiously as far back as at least the neolithic. Combined with the earth toned sketch book makes for powerful imagery. I made myself a red ink brush pen a while back; if I can find it I'm going to start using a similar pallette in my own sketchbook, I hope you don't mind.

i was in the sundown when andrew drew these last x-mas and new years. mark is definatly an unkind person, likes to start fights with anyone he can. ed is just thick and slouched all the time. andrews sp from the first of jan. should be titled " hey baby, want a kiss?" the boy is brilliant and he is a most inspirational figure in my own life, and has helped me in my own transgressions in art many times over. i can not tell you how amazing it is to hang out with this guy when he comes to boulder. one day he's drawing downers, the next he's got a fan club all surrounding him, and i show up without my sketchbook like an idiot. it was cool to look back on those moments and relate what was going on in andrews life at that time. thank you again droid. i'm a noob to all this computer protocol so give me some time to post some stuff of my own. :evilbat:

side note, now that i rember, Mark pulled the portrait of himself out of andrews hand and started drawing his hair more sticking up, cause he thought he'd look cooler or something, i just remember andrew looking at me with this look of horror in his eyes that i will never forget. in fact i was horrified myself that this drunk asshole thought he could improve upon andrews' drawing himself. some people just don't understand the sacredness of it all!!!!
