cool sculpture, but it looks like you're having trouble with the "flash" that results from slicing into the sculpey to create texture. One way to get around this is to put plastic wrap over an area you would like to add surface detail to, and then sculpt on top of it. The plastic wrap will kind of keep the sculpey in place around the stroke, so you wont end up with a rough looking sculpt. The only problem with this technique is that its sometimes difficult to get asharp cut, because the wrap kind of softens all the strokes...
What kind of tool are you using? Whatever it is seems to be working well for you.

Really Great stuff Battlemonkey. I love the flap of skin that comes from under his eye and ends under his chin. Is this a natural feature or some kind of sewn on strap to keep him from opening his jaw too wide? :)
Just one question though.. Why are you working at such a small scale?

Nice one Battlemonkey.:) I can see that you are learning just as I am. It is a great test of skill I would think to make them this small.;) Is it because you wanna make them this small, or is it because Sculpey is so pricey? (just wondering because I know how pricey Sculpey is myself) Nice work, and keep 'em comin.

thanks for the great comments guys! "Scotty" i work at that scale due to the fact i like toys and action figures and such, and those vinyl kits are awesome too, when i buy the Ssculpey i buy the big 40lb box. "ioptics" that flap of skin makes sure his jaw doesnt open to wide, and yes it is natural. "McNallyism" ooh, thanks for the tip, yeah, i do have problems with the flash, i'll try that out on my next sculpture! as for the tools i use, i use this rubber thing that looks like a paint brush, but instead of bristles, it has a rubber nub on the end, i have 3 shapes, one is like a chisel, another just like a pointed paint brush, and the last is a paintbrush shape with a corner wedge built into it~ thanks again for the comments, i love this site, you can lear a lot here~ , but, only if people comment and critique one another!:chug: :D

One thing I noticed just now...the nose is a bit crooked on this one. Not sure if you were going for that effect or not but I just noticed it.

thanks again for the crits and comments, first of all, about the nose~ it was meant to be a bit off center, he is a monster/creature after all, not the prettiest of creatures~
and for ZippZopp~ tips for absolute newbie? ok,...
-WIRE FRAME~ you can go to just any hardware store, and buy a roll of wire, or if you dont have the cash, just bend a hanger, use this as your skeleton...
-on the wireframe, put a little bit sculpey onto the wireframe, to give it some "meat", cook it in the oven~ this will give your sculpey something to grip to, trust me, it'll help a bunch
-just get the pose PERFECT, and the proportions right before you get yourself too deep into the sculpture and realize its all wrong...
i guess thats about it, the rest is up to you~
good look, dont be afraid to ask for tips, i'm no professional, i just do it as a hobby for now...

This is lookin' pretty sweet, man. It must be a huge pain to get that much detail into something so tiny. I can't wait to see a full-figure sculpt from you. Keep sculpting and deffinitely keep posting.

I like what you've got going there... although the nose does seem a little cock-eyed and the cheeks don't look symetric or are a little out of whack or something. What I mean is, the muscle (?) doesn't seem to line up the same way on either side of the face (looking at it again, did a piece fall off the left side of his face?).
For that size, especially, I am very impressed!
