How do you do it, do you just use the smudge tool or something. I really have no idea. If there is a tutorial to help me that would be great, but also just telling me would be fantastic.

I want to know this too. I can do gradients easily with a pencil, but not with photoshop...

I thought there was a gradient fill option. Just click and hold the regular fill and a secondary option will come up.

gradients tend to look cheap and not describe form very well. I think most people tend to work up with mid-opacity brushes. Go to sparth's website and look at his tutorial, or even Prometheus|ANJ's. I haven't found anything so far that helps any better than those. Basically taking regular brushes @ between 50-70% opacity and build up. Hope it helps!

My approach on coloring photoshop is to work in graytones. First I fill the layer with 50% gray. Then I use the dodge and burn tool to add highlights and shadows were needed. You use the (ALT) key to toggle between dodge and burn so you that your application is faster.

Then once, your shading looks nice. Pick the airbrush tool, change the option to color and then apply your color. This option is like using a wash, but extremely vibrant.

What settings do you use for the dodge/burn tool? What Range and Exposure?

I have found that 15% works the best for me. You hit the (enter) key while your Dodging/burning then type your exposure setting (15) and then hit the (enter) key to get back to painting.

This works on most of the the tools in PS

That seems to work really well! Finally I can do some sort of gradient effects with my wacom...

The only thing is my dodge/burn brush has an annoying "step" to it and i can't find the option to turn it off... It happens when i turn the "Size Jitter" from "Pen Pressure" to "Off".

WHen you say STEP do you mean like sputtering every other pixel. Hmm. I have all my settings like this. See if this helps.

It's sort of like the brush only "draws" when i've moved the pointer 2 or 3 pixels. I have pretty much the same settings.

Ok I think I know what it is:

Click on "Brush Tip Shape" at the top. and make sure that "Hardness" is at 0% and that your "Spacing" is at 0% as well
