Everyone have Doom III I hope?.

Good news:
Holy cow talk about texture and normal mapped goodness. The detail is jaw dropping. Can't wait to play this thing at home.

Bad news:
Running it on a 9800 3.0 and I am getting hang ups on medium 640x480 settings... In the studio we crashed 4 times already.. :\
**edit** this was due to having ghetto drivers and some funky settings. :dur: It runs fine now.

How much RAM do you have?

1 gig ram. Maybe I missed some texture swapping setting, but I dont think so. :\

I'm going to run it on a different setup at home tonight so I'll post results. On an encouraging note, I have seen it run faster on a Sager 3.2 notebook with a 9600 and 1 gig ram than two other desktops we played on. The hitches and crashes could be from something that we are running in the background in the studio so your results may vary.

That doesn't sound right... 9800 and a gig of ram and your running it at those shitty setting. I have a 9800 xt and 512 mb of ram and it runs 1024 with high settings. Some people have had problems like that because of the monitors refresh rate. Putting it down to 60 hz could possibly fix the problem you are having.

R Brown
August 3rd, 2004, 08:35 PM
Yeah, it seemed fishy. Thats why I tested it on the sager notebook and saw that it ran better. Cant wait to get home and really play.!!

That little shot of the mars exterior had me sick to my pants... :D

Sounds odd. I'm a the highest detail level and it's great. Altho there are a few weird visual bugs such as having the characters' half darker than the other half. :thinking: :shrug: The only thing that drives me insane is those pitch black shadows. Is this another bug happening only on this machine or someone forgot to mention to the R&D team that shadows AREN'T black ? >:{

Anyway... I came stuck at one point in the game so I think it's a good time to actually take a break for the day and go :painting:

P.S.: Probably going to have nightmares tonight.... :$ But I've been pleasantly suprised... I guess you are when you expect the worst !

P.P.S: I don't think I can cram more of proms (?) awesome emoticons in there but this one HAD to be here :right: :moon:
Double nightmares now !

Yo guys check this out, it helped me out with settings:

I'm on 785 ram, geforce fx ... and I pretty much keep it at low settings for performance.

Cool thread Sammy, thanks for the tip.

*update

I got home and ran it on my 2.3 1gig 9800 and it ran fine with no crashes at 480x640. Must be something at the studio, (I double checked not nearly the latest drivers there).

Damn, the game had my heart going .. :$ I hate the dark, that flashlight better never run outta batteries. My hat is off to ID, the game has me seriously creeped out like no other gaming experience.

Hear ya on the bounced light issue. At first I didnt like it, but then I noticed how much fear was in just exploring those dark corners and crannies.

It would be an interesting exercise to see how much the mood changes with raytraced light. Its also likely that the shadows were a design descision to offer places to bring in npcs without anyone seeing them pop.

freaky as hell, and gorgeous when the, as one guy put it, "cant see shit technology" doesnt interfere. put it on my laptop and it was doing decent on medium quality 640x480. and i actually got to play it a little on ultra quality when a bunch of the guys put it on a machine with one of those nividia 6800. it looked dope as, well, hell.

I'm a botmatch/skirmish/ctf/rts-er so I hope there will be a patch for that stuff if it isn't already in the game.

Prommy I am the same as you in gaming, skirmish, bots, ctf. My rig is pretty low end, athlon 1700 7500 ati card 512 ram so I won't buy it now, plus I am not interested in a game that only will run 24 hrs and be done, and then sit around and wait for community Guru's to come in and create mods and maps and add-ons better than ID did themselves.

ID is doing the same crap with Doom3 that they did with Q3, they build a real nice framework and then let the game community finish up the package, of course they make the money and the mods/mappers/artists don't get anything but praise. Seems weird to me. To me I am totally hooked on UT2003, no cd clattering away in the drive and it runs ok fast on my pc. Tons of great mods and mutators, no hard shadows and pretty decent AI.

Glad you Guys are having fun with it though, new toys alwasy rock!

"""Looks aside, is it fun?"""

This is the first game I have bought that has not had an online capture the flag component in a good long time.

Regardless the game was pretty damn fun and full to the brim of tension. Within the first 50 minutes there are already a few easter eggs and plenty of novelties. Lots of scripted events make it a top notch production.

The only thing that I thought was just 'okay' was the price.
Its too early in the game to judge the story yet.

I don't think it's as good as I would have expected. It looks great, and I love the emphasis on dark spaces and effectively using your little flashlight... I don't know why some people complain about them, it's about the only somewhat unique gameplay aspect. I played some multiplayer last night, there are rooms where you can turn off all the lights and pick off guys from the safety of complete darkness. Other than that, the multiplayer is pretty substandard... they didn't try to do anything with it.. it's like something out of the 90s. The game is lacking in alot of aspects.. these days, you expect to see location damage, bullet holes, any sort of environmental damage and whatnot. But killing enemies and shooting the environment is almost completely static... which is pretty sad. Nothing takes damage, even dead bodies just burn off the second they die.

So, great graphics, lighting, voices, and story elements... but everything else is mediocre and outdated. Still a fun and spooky experience. I'd say it's a good 8/10 overall. I can see it getting old fast, so I hope there are interesting mods.

I have UT2003, it has its good and bad sides.
I'm getting really tired of balanced weapons though, and DM/TM/CTF is getting dull too. Invasion could've been good but it sucked.

I'm not sure if I'll buy DOOM III before bots and actual gameplay stuff comes out, because I'm not interested in a 24hr linear game either.

Q1 had corpses that stayed. Even old 2D games did. It adds so much to gameplay, being able to see what you have done where. I also hate the cloned units, esp the fat walking man and science grunt. Back in the days of Q1 or sprites you couldn't see any individuality, nowdays everyone has an identical scratchmark on the chest or whatever. It wouldn't be that hard to make modular characters. Its a lot harder making the whole flashy 3D thing work, but I guess that's more important nowdays.

Most games are just monotonously tossing units at me to kill and watch disappear in a magical puff, only to persistantly respawn a few seconds later. Boring. That and other things (such as static enviroment) makes you feel that what you do has no real effect or meaning.

From what I've gathered here, I'm guessing I will hate the game.

Hopefully the community will do something interesting. From what I've heard (about the beta/leak), it's easy to mod. I'd like to see an RTS thing, like building resource stuff that allows you to spawn demons or marines that run around and kill each other, sorta Herzog Zwei-ish.

I have a P4 2.5ghz, 512mb and a GF4 MX 440. Hopefully I will be okay if I decide to buy D3 or HL2.

|-------- That's me playing Doom 3.

I am thoroughly enjoying Doom 3. I wasn't too excited about it pre-release but I bought simply because it was Doom. The graphics are nice, blah blah blah. The sound, however, takes the cake in my book. So much so that I think the sound brings more to the table than any of the visual elements. I am also beginning to think that game is built of nothing but scripted events. I think it is very possible that ID built the game without any randomly spawned wandering npcs. I could be wrong, it is just a theory. :)

Anyways, it's fun. I'm enjoying it. I can't play for longer than an hour before I have to take a break. It's a been a long time since I've experienced a game (single-player) this intense.

I like UT2004, but only playing instagib, much more skill involved. Been thinking bout giving doom3 a swing, but a game needs to have replay value for me to enjoy it, which doom3 doesn't have much off as far as I can see.

If you like scary fps'ers, try AvP and play the marine campaign, that was freaky >:D.

Prometheus|ANJ: Yea, Doom III isn't your cup of tea ... Actually when I first started playing it I was like "You know who would absolutely hate this game? Prometheus..."
It's exciting, but insanely easy ... I haven't tried it on a larger difficulty, 'cause my comp is having a hard time with the more intense moments : D

Prom, you may dig FarCry... it's as linear as any game these days (thanx to 'story') but they at least plop you down in a playground/level with at least 10 ways to reach your goal... and you can go at it all sneaky and stealthy, or out in the open shooting hellicopters down the whole way...

... anyways, it's become apparent that I need a new video card... after a year my Geforce FX is getting lazy:
anybody have any suggestions??

Joshua : uhmm, it run nearly fine on my comp : Athlon 1.2(not XP. Just athlon. One who's hot ;)), 512mo of ram and a Geforce 3 64mo(Not GF3 Ti 500. No. One of the first GF3), and I can play it at 800*600 at medium detail - and I think I can up a bit the details.
But for that I have to change some setting, as explain on the link to planetdoom :)

Otherwise the game isn't bad, but I still miss good old game, those one who can keep me on my comp... The latest who do that was SW : KOTOR. I'm still waiting for a true heir for Half Life

The flashlight is like having the player needlessly eat a banana every 5th minute, and then the player will be really scared and vulnerable while eating the banana. Is it safe to take the bananabreak in this corridor? Boy I'm excited now! I sure hope there's no hellknights to catch me during my bananabreak!

Sinix
August 7th, 2004, 09:00 PM
Oh, the framerate will definitely start going down, mainly because of the sheer amount of physics going on as all the ragdoll bodies interact with each other. The framerate will get better again if you get them off each other and whatnot. But, yea, they stack quite well.. you can have all kinds of fun messing with them and the environment. I should make a fort of dead people in one of the outside environments.

DOOM 3: STRESSFUL!!!! I started that game at 10pm, with all the lights off, my door shut and my big ass headphones on. This game is intense. I really like it.

Gripes: Granades made of rubber?? WTF is up with how they bounce?

THe AI seems pretty dumb, but i like how aggressive the guys are.

LAME machine gun sound, BUT me being the little modder i am, fixed it so now I have a machine gun the rocks. It has a really nice thumping, crack sound. wayyyyyyyy better. If anyone wants the little mod i made, just shot me a PM. I may change the firing rate of it too :) God i love how easy id makes modding their games!!!!!

btw, i have an ancient AMD 1.2ghz, 256mb ram, and a ati 9800 pro and it runs on med quality at 800x600. It does get a little laggy when there are a few guys on screen though :(

The code stuff in the pk4 / zip is just txt now is it not? I've modded Q1 and Q3 and you had to compile. Did you look into adding extra weapons? id tends to limit the number of weapons and items due to their network code, using bit-flags or whatever.
How much mirrored code is there? In Q1 you had to alter quite a lot of routines in different files if you wanted to change stuff

I'm looking in the flashlight mod. It seems there's 2 folders with weapon relevant content.
def/weapon_*
script/weapon_*
The weapon files seem to be identical in those dirs.

Any map editor bundled?

pasted from another post in another forum, where i post as carbombjack.

enjoy, i thought it was funny.

i finished it, hooray.
first overall impressions of the whole game?

i just got this overwhelming sense of deja vu. the music sounded a lot like what reznor and vrenna and the rest of the nails circle-jerked into tracks, but not as good as the budding "downward spiral" flair.

the sound effects were mostly those canned hollywood fx cd's or those free extras you get with ACID and Protools shit. guns, explosions, all that.

the ambient sounds sounded like pitch shifted synth pads or just "hey that sounds cool, loop it!!!!!!1!!!1! hu-hyuck!"

the sounds weren't mixed well AT ALL. i mean the gunshots were barely louder than the footsteps, they didn't take advantage of the full (this is me shooting in the dark, just a guess) 44 khz. didn't add sub-bass and high frequency sound to make the sounds much more full. a gunshot isn't just a boom. it's a click, a clack, metallic slamming, a rush of air, this and that. all that at the same time. a good sound effect sounds different to your ears every time you hear it because it has a decent dynamic range. so, in a place where there's a lot of low-end ambient noise, the high-pitched shrill metal action sounds will stand out, and blah blah.

the monster sounds were fucking disgusting. and in the lazy way. either that or the guys doing the sound effects never got to watch the animations or even saw the creatures. The Revanent, with its high and mighty name, sounded like... a kitten. i would have imagined a ghostly sound of a 9 foot tall giant's skeleton. they did have a nice touch with the rattling bones sound for footsteps, but... um... no. not really enough to carry it through.

i loved how when the trites exploded, and were gone, their death sound continued for the next, oh, twenty minutes or so. yeah. just a really long, pitch shifted, overlayed over reptilian sounds hiss. mmm hmm. that's quality.

looks like there wasn't any research done AT ALL about the creatures' shape, their vocalisations, their personality and whether a high or low pitch vocalisation would suit them better... blah.

my rant... yeah it's almost over.

the audio logs sounded like the actors were reading the script, and looking up at the moniter of the guys at the mixing console for approval. damnit... put your freakin heart into it! if you're gonna be telling us about how carrying this bad-ass marine's drooling, mumbling, restrained body into an isolation room scared you, don't read it off like a fucking grocery list! god damnit! i paid fifty four dollars for this fucking b-movie shitflick!

you'd think that they would have tried using a better model of the imp, since you see them every-fucking-where, but nope. the same piece of shit edges fucking turned by a retard, noodled detail, nonsensical anatomy model from e3 of... 1864. fucking letdown. a big fucking idsappointment.

yeah, i like how they built the last few levels from the get go, you know... to like.. get used to the tools and make stuff work good during the first few levels, but fuck me in a fucking shiv wound, be fucking consistent. god damn. there were parts of the levels where i didn't even want to look because the asset creation process was probably being done another way because they thought they needed to be more efficient, thus resulting in SHITSTAINS aka low res pixellated textures being triliniarly bisexually antiseptically rendered means you're a fucking asshole for making me look at this blurred piece of shit for fifty four dollars.

to Carmack: hey, you know, a while ago i thought it would be clever to make up a nickname to sorta look like carmack because i loved the id games of the old days when they were, um, good. but now, i just want to strap a few sticks of dynamite under the hood of one of your ferraris.

to Reznor: well, nice job backing out in the middle of it and leaving your blundering, concussion-numbed ex drummer to pick up the pieces. i hope Bleedthrough is a fucking stellar album or i'm bombing your new orleans studio.

to the id mappers: woah! quake 3.5? cool!

to the character animators: hehe. it's nice to have that illusion of realism destroyed completely by the ugliest stretching i've seen in a long time. oh. not to mention seams which would make my third grade, morbidly obese secret blowjobs-for-candy girlfriend's continuous cameltoe-wedgie jealous.

to that girl from ebgames who suggested i preorder doom 3 and then with perfect timing and just a hint of seductive saleswoman witchcraft informed me of a mail in rebate, and that i can pay for the entire game along with the preorder... to her i say this. jesus. i thought you were cool. i was all, hey! you went to my highschool! and she was all, yeah! you're that guy! i heard about you! and i was all, cool so you know me! what's your name? and then the whole movies thing, then that, and whatever, um, like... i'm not ever gonna call you again. traitor.

The death threats were not serious. Don't sue me.

i think if you take my comments with a fistful of rock salt you'll see that i've actually got some genuine points in there, buried among the rubbble like those tragic 9/11 pancakes they dug up a few days later and told everyone about.

edit:
oh yeah, and the sounds, most of them, sounded exactly like the stuff vrenna did for American Mcgee's Alice game. and that sucks because they weren't that good for that either.

Prom: From first glance, a lot of the style for coding looks the same as q3, as far as everything being in symplistic txt format. All the pk4 files are3 is zips, just like pk3's. VERY CONVINIANT!!!! Making the machine gun louder and WAY brighter took like 10 minutes and they game is already that much more entertaining. Now my gun lite up the entire room with i nice flash stoobe and make it more intense. As far as putting a whole new weapon in.... i have no idea.

Bizarre: I TOTALY AGREE ABOUT THE SOUNDS!!!!!!!!!!! The guns sound WEAK!! (read my above posts about fixing that)

MY MAIN GRIPE ABOUT DOOM 3: NO TRENT REZNOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost want to cry knowing that ill NEVER know how creepy this game could have sounded. all the sound is just looped ambients, no music at all. I want some creepy little looping tracks at least. Ya know, a little percusion of some sort mixed in. LAme.

BUT i still think it is an amazing FPS. and hands down the best looking game ever. period.
