View Full Version : INSECTS and Creepy Crawlies! a speed painting lesson

Hey all...new speed painting thread...this one is BUGS!!
in these speed paintings I want you to include one SIMILE or METAPHOR. ie..the spots on my bug are like falling leaves....my bug has antennae like spears and a river of legs.
now here is the trick...dont be LITERAL...DO NOT BE LITERAL...try to suggest these things in shapes...lines...colors....
the trick to a great concept is to have an underlying metaphor or simile....ie..her silhouette was a curved elegant vase...or "the warriors arms were pythons that choked its prey" or "the robots head was like toaster and its programs were just as smart" or "the creatures head was like a boulder...its eyes sit on top like two small stones basking in the sunlight"
if you give an idea you are drawing a metaphor to describe it then you can push your idea toward something unique. It also helps you communicate ideas if you have underlying metaphor.
Lets see what you come up with.
here is a link to get you inspired!!
http://www.thaibugs.com/bugs1.htm
these are real bugs...they have metaphor of their own...this bug is a leaf...this bug is a stick with deer antlers...this bug is like a rhino...
you see what i mean?
make your own...draw one from life...whatever you are inspired to do with the creepy crawlies!

This is Cranius Rectus Inverticus, better known as the Headupass beetle. It is commonly seen wandering aimlessly. Its awkward leg structure makes it a very clumsy creature.
10 minutes drawing time.

Did this at work whilst doing other stuff, not allowed to do this kinda stuff at work, (in da wrong job!) so it has taken from 12:45pm through to argument with the boyf, to beer and stuff to 5:45pm, home time. So, don't rrrreally know exactly how long it took.....

Thats probably the reason it is extinguished.
It happened just last night... and noone even ever saw this bug.

this bug does not need a science fiction story to be scary. Carrier of the lethal and parasitic malaria plasmodium, which feeds, reproduces and hides in your red blood cells (or your liver or your brain for that matter). many die yearly as a result of this bloodsucker's bite.

no ref at all - just moving pixels around looking to define a form, add some value.. see what comes out.

very nice everyone....more more more....Id like to see metaphors that are appropriate to the idea...the above metaphor about it moving around like a puppet is a good one. the animator would know exactly how to do that...what else might one do to suggest that metaphor visually?
oblio...i am very impressed with your progress this year. your value range has finally settled down to looking light light on form. I want to see at least ten more bugs out of you. listen to master...smegoblio must trust master.

mind candy...now that was a nice metaphor....but how could you draw the critter to show that without words??
is that possible?
that is the trick....it sometimes works...sometimes is not possible to communicate without animation...but the theory is there. the trick is to use metaphors that you can communicate in the image itself...not just in some beautiful words next to it.
lets see some stuff that does this...

Eh, its really NOT fast drawn(2+ hours), and it never was intended for this forum, but it fits, if we all look past my previous statements.
http://www.home.no/devildefender/Beatle2.jpg
(I did something artistic, but very wrong with the drawing. Can anyone tell me if a beetle IS able to turn its head like that? I went from live drawing (beetles are mostly static) to digital cam. Why? Because when it no longer submitted to my rule, it began to run about and emit baaaaaad smell. After an unsucessful drowning-attempt, I had to try to kill it in a peacefull manner. No details of how, but the incident ended up with open windows and a not-so-good-looking beetle-corpse. )
