Its been a long time since I've posted..heh, not alot of time to compile images and shit. Anyhoo, these are some gouache studies I did of some rockwells a couple months ago. I hadn't used gouache in like a year or so, so I tought I'd get my hand back in it. I liked using it again for sure. Fun stuff. Sorry about the resolution, shot with my digicam. C&C welcome.

Thanks wes. I'd scan the page, but I don't have it anymore. My teacher has it. I haven't really done any new guoaches since that one, but I think I'm gonna start back up again cause I'm having a crappy time getting stuff together for my oil work. Thanks again.

Mainloop- Its on Crescent board. I believe its a 110 or a 100 cold press. I don't think they make it anymore, or they just call it something different now. I've had a bunch from doing gouache awhile back. Its good stuff, takes the water well.

Heres a little quick experiment I dug up. I don't care for the painting all that much but, like i mentioned it was an experiment. I gessoed over a little piece of 5 by 7 card stock and tried the goauche on it. It didn't take all that well, cause the paint would fall into the grooves of the gesso. I couldn't really get any nice edges cause when I would soften the paint wouldn't blend all that well. The only thing I like are the effects with drybrushing with pure opaque guoache and some of the background texture. Sorry the scans a little big

hey, i really like the guache studies. I can hardly use the stuff myself. I always end up getting colors that just dried wet again. the then start mixing with everything else. I was wondering about how you work with it and if there are any tips you have on working with guache?

thanks rollb82. I can't offer too much advice other than keep using it to get a feel for it. Alot of people use gouache more like watercolor when its really a more opaque medium, but its great cause it can go both ways. When I start any gouache, I set up my colors on top of a damp paper towel that way they stay wet longer and wont dry as fast. I also have a little spray bottle to wet them when they start getting tacky. Keeping the paints moist makes them easier to work with. Whats nice about gouache is that it does dry fast, but you can reactivate the paint with water, unlike the other water-based mediums. Its one weakness is that the colors aren't nearly as vibrant as watercolor or acrylic. Oh well...heh. Hope that helps a little.

Damn! Your colors are awesome! Do you have a wide range of colors? Or do you mix them yourself?? I just bought some tubes of gouache, but they only got the primary colors Y_Y.

Uinku- I only use about 7 colors the rest is just mixing. I pretty much just use a warm and cool of the primarys, a green and burnt sienna. Maybe black sometimes.

The studies look great Tiny. Another semester must have just started, I see all the students posting again thats great. I never found out what you wanted to do in the art field Tiny. Is it illustration or to be a painter? or something completly different? And did Erik get married? I hope everything is going well for everyone at the school and Ill talk to you later.

Thanks cityworker. I'm really want to focus on just becoming a painter, and thats about it. I'd like to dabble with some illustration, but certainley not long term. And yeah, eriks married now.
AmadorL- Thanks I'm gonna try and keep it up, but I think i'm gonna turn this into a misc. thread for myself.

And this is about as tech as i'll ever freakin get. I love watches so I decided to try and paint some from one of my favorite manufacturers,Panerai! Anyway, done in gouache. I think could be WAY tighter, but I need to get my bearings with it first. My ellispes/perspective could be a little better too.

the only thing I'd suggest is putting some sort of reflection across the face to suggest a crystal. could be as simple as a stroke of white. if...there is a crystal.
awesome portraits.
