I was just wondering if anyone knows any good tutorials on painting water, digitally or traditional. I dont mean like water in a glass, but spans of water, like the sea or a large lake.
When I try it it always looks to flat, fake and unrealistic.
Thx in advance for any help,
TJ

the best way is get a reference, and look... and I mean really look at what it looks like and paint exactly what you see... and make sure you paint the surroundings.. because water will look different due to its surroundings.. and after you have painted that one scene do another.. do a bunch.. in all different times of day, in different whether conditions.. then you will be able to make up water..
good luck
Also go to museums, and art stores, and look at different paintings with water, take notes, and draw thumnails and write down what the artist was doing in his or her paintings.. the types of colors they used near and far.. the saturation of the colors... etc...
peace.

If any one knows of a good water tutorial, or has the time to write one up, it would be tremendously helpful. Thanks

Water has two important qualities, it's reflective, and it's in motion, if you can convey these then you get realistic water. Leonardo Da Vinci has done many studies (quick sketches) of water, drawing them (by looking at the picture and sketching them in my book) was a good exercise that helped me to better understand water. It’s a tricky subject because it doesn’t like to hold still, and when you draw things from a picture you loose some of the three dimensional qualities found in real life.
