I have never designed armor before, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This is what I have so far (it is still fairly rough):

Does anyone know of any good webpages/references that detail the construction of armor? I would like to design something functional yet appealing to the eye.

C&C is appreciated

Hi Steve,

in the reference-thread there are some more links you might want to look at:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2138

If you want your armour to "functionate" youīve got to look for articulation. At the moment it looks as if the front is made completely from one piece of metal - if so the warrior wonīt be able to bend forward and backward.

BTW if you want to do something functional forget the idea of carrying the sword on your back. This is just good for transportation and you canīt get it fast and versatile enough out of the sheath - especially if itīs a sword of more than 60 cm length.

looks really good so far. I would love to see it finished.

WOW, those are some great links! That is exactly what I needed.

Flipse- good points. I will pay more attention to the articulation. -That seems to be the key in designing armor that is believable.

Thanks guys!

This is going to ba an awesome drawing when it's done! I mean, it's already awesome to me, so just imagine...

But...It seems in places like the armour is 'painted on him'; it's a bit too close to his skin - it almost is his skin.

Think about that before you go on - he would have to be able to take it on and off at some point. :D

But this one is looking to become one great drawing! :)

first of all, thats a beautiful drawing~
my only critique would be his helmet... if his helmet were so thin and close to his head, if someone whacked him with a club or anything, it would go straight to the skull, making his helmet worthless. still a beautiful none the less!!!:D

Thanks for the comments guys. You have all been very helpful and encouraging.

Here is a small update:

I think I fixed the helmet and the right arm. I am still not happy witht the stomach area. Right now I am trying to work out the leg armor.

Great WIP. One small problem I have with it is the left side of the stomach taht we see. I think that if you were to slim/ trim it down a bit. It would look a lot better. One of the other things is that there isn't much contrast between the stomach and his right arm. I suggest that you make his arm darker than the stomach so that its simpler to differentiate between the two!

Another small problem I have is with the forearm of his right arm I think it needs to taper a bit more, as it gets closer to the wrist. Just a tad problem I had. But they're both easily fixable!:)
