I've noticed, both for myself and for many other artists, music plays a big role in doing work. To sit down and paint is one thing, but to listen to some kind of music adds a whole seperate dimension to the experience. I guess I'm just curious as to what most of you use to get your creative juices flowing. My personal favorites are as follows:

-Just about all of the music off sutemos.net (first learned about it off Bengal's site)
-Pink Ployd (everything before Roger Waters left)
-Led Zeppelin (especially Presence, III, IV)
-Ravi Shankar
-Pixies
-Velvet Underground
-Miles Davis
-John Coltrane
-Ornette Coleman
-Eric Dolphy
-Dexter Gordon
-Jimi Hendrix (I have a ton of his studio bootlegs)

Feel free to post your lists, your thoughts on music with regards to art, pictures from your latest colonoscopy, whatever floats your boat.

I find it best to listen to symphonic pieces, either movie soundtracks or classical pieces.

But it mostly depends on what I'm drawing, if its an action scene, I put on something powerful and energetic. If its emotional and calm, I put on some emotional and calm music! (surprise!!!) ;)

Here are some favorites:

Gladiator,
Braveheart,
Lord of the Rings,
Beethoven's 9th,
Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (powerful, powerful music)

I also listen to other music, like Modest Mouse (Float On), Wheezer, Franz Ferdinand (Take Me Out), and sometimes the talk show LoveLine :D

Some good taste in music in here haha :D
Here are my favorites to listen to when sketching or painting..mostly mellow stuff (in alphabetical order!! because im just that cool):

The Appleseed Cast

Broken Social Scene
Death Cab for Cutie
Grandaddy
Interpol
Jimmy Eat World

Haha theres a huge list for you all to not read...
Its odd that all the music that has been listed so far is, in general, fast-paced "pump up" music, but I try to listen to the exact opposite when im making any sort of art.
Maybe I'm just some sort of freak.

I guess your right music does play a part. While taking my first studio class last year i was struggling UNTIL one day I remembered to bring my cd player and headphones to class. My still lifes elevated 150%.... amazing. i guess I just needed to create my own little world.
(Now I listen to 1 cd start to finish for my drawings)
anyway here's my playlist
--limp bizkit
--babyface
--musiq
--dido
--3 doors down
--evanescence

Mostly ambient track, or nearly without lyrics on it(just disturb myself), like

Inade
Aphex Twin
Autechre
Amon Tobin
Coil
The Resident
Lots of OST(from horror movie :d)
Track taken on many CD(Soulfly, Marilyn Manson, Oomph!, The Gathering).
It's just to create an ambient where my mind can sink... So I just "see".
