Hi all. This is a quite fast matte painting/concept painting I did for Framestore CFC. The idea I wanted to express was a fantasy environment with a temple, quite like the stunning environments we've recently seen in Lotr. Think the yellow colors helps push this.

I used some photographs, and some digital paint to complete this. I feel quite happy with the result. Tell me your thought, thanks.

Outstanding! Did you take the photographic elements yourself? With a digital camera? If so what megapixel? I'm using a Nikon coolpix 5MP for the stuff I'm doing now. Just curious what others are using out there. You should post this over on sijun as well if you haven't already. Curious what Loki might say.

Again, very nice work.

Wow thats really impressive !!

It looks very fantasy, great color choice !
My only crit is that there is maybe too much unnecessary detail, which is distracting us from the castle.

And more important, that castle looks waay too small, too weak.
I also dont understand the transition of the foreground into the background, it is really confusing, especially on the right hill.

but I am too picky now, that painting kicks ass Seung, great work !!!

Great Lord!!!

I cannot even fathom how you do this stuff. Sometimes I get the cold sweats when I see someone who is so much better than I am. You, however, are off my radar. I admire your skill and do not feel threatened by it!!!!!

Thanks all! I am glad you like it.

davi> Funny thing is the castle is real, and the rest is painted...heehee..nah...
The castle is of course painted. It's difficult to just paste 6 plates in, and make them all fit. A lot of different plates were used for this matte. It was tricky to make them all fit together, but that's why you use the paintbrush... ^^

The soft light is painted, as all plates were totally blue and flat. Generally, most of the paint is in the middle of the picture, although I had to paint little bit all over the place.

Eric> No, the plates were given to me. I can assure you that the camera used was not a 5mp one, more like 2-3.
Original size of this is 2k wide.

Kaini> Too much detail? You have a good point here. I was thinking about this myself. The castle is supposed to be a little fortress for the king and his men, like a sanctuary. I felt that if you took away too much of the detail around the edges, the focusing is too concentrated on the castle, and I didn't want this. I wanted the feel of a mystical and "secret" place, so the surrounding is important too.

iwasink> Pictures? I use pictures as references for my personal work, but the work itself doesn't contain any photographs...matte paintings contain plates and other photographs of course, as it's shot on video/film.

Mmh, u got a real nice website. You really seem to have all areas covered, and that's really amazing. Nice to see a swede being this good. Really awesome (mmh, strange these things, seeing someone as good as you is both inspiring and discouraging....)
Keep it up :)

Amazing work as always. Truely beautiful.

My only comment would be that if you take afew steps back from the moniter, the left side of the valley foreground looks like a picture with the valey just erased with a soft brush. It's hard to explain what I mean, and even harder (as a "newbie") to explain how it could be fixed.
The edge just seems too soft, and doesn't appear to match the rest of the image.

Very good piece, Seung Ho!
I would tend to disagree with Kaini.
In true reality, when you look upon a vista as grandios as say
Manhattan or Rio De janero or the Himalayan foothills...
extreme detail is omnipresent. It is you, the viewer, who has to do the filtering.

That being said, I think that large amounts of detail only add to the realisim of your work.

I want to see more. You rock Seung Ho! ;)
