Good start. I like the character and the posture but here's a few things to look into. Loosen up on the coloring a bit..you can play around with brush opacity and layers. The backgroud (or her halo) feels a bit tight and the flame ( I assume) in her hand looks solid and not like flame. Take a look at this thread by Prometheus about shading and highlight. You might find it helpful. nice job and keep it going.

the linework is fantastic, but the image is lacking in color. try repainting the whole thing in greyscale, and dont forget to blend! i am noticing tons of hard edges. keep it up!

you have some very interesting elements in this piece, and the character posing is very decent.
as tengu stated, you've got to pay attention to the lights coming from her hand and her eyes. these will be the details that viewers will probably see first. eyes are always the first thing that we see in a portrait.
also, light will influence all your piece, it must not be forgotten.
in order to do so, you've got to be aware that you will not obtain anything strong by having the same value for these light sources, and their surounding universe. color won't change a thing either.
you must express the brightness by making a very high contrast between the light source itself, and all the elements evolving all around it.
you already began to add interesting shadows. at the same time, concentrate on the lights, as for this process, it is really a question of keeping the right balance between brightness and darkness.
keep it up

The thing in her hand is supposed to be more smoky than flame. But I didn't really get that either. Her eyes are suppose to be the only light source.
Is there any way to blend 2 layers in photoshop together?

Not sure if u do this already but work with layers and brushes and what not for effects. Search in google for photoshop brushes...( if u use Photoshop) and mess aroudn with the smudges and blures and all that good stuff.
To make things looke more flowish and smooth just expreiment with all the tools and filters and after that u can have a idea of what u want and you can add what u have experimented to your work.
Did this make any sense :o Im not good and explaining lol

Well, I've softened up the shadows, and redid most of them. Added some light reflecting around her face. I dropped the thing in her hand. It just wasn't working as fire, smoke, or JELL-O. I did a few other things, but you should be able to tell.

So, am I headed in the right direction? What else needs to change?
