I'm a little confused with the "thingy" that seems to be propped up on the bow... what is it?

This is a really beautiful piece but I have to say, the stuff on your site....fantastic. amazing. Inspiring. Awesome, awesome stuff man. BTW I read your "about me" section...also very inspring. Keep up the good work, man.
