Thanks guys for the help. Truth be told, my life has been too easy, I'm trying to re-adjust my priorities right now and as a result, I'm filling up my days in the last week with a lot of work and not enough drawing. I should have been asleep an hour and a half ago, but I thought of you guys, so I will know who to blame when I'm a zombie at 6am tomorrow :D I'll try to comment when I get my hour break before the second half of my day starts. Night everyone.

A lightly coloured scan from my sketchbook...the pencil sketch itself was a quick 5 minute sketch, colouring was a blazing 2 or so minutes..

nice one Oblio almost looks like you used a photo ref(or did ya?)because everything is dead on perfect....try what i said on that one,im quite anxious to see whatll look like painted..

Jester, yeah i can see your struggling with the nose, maybe perfect a stock\standard nose type then adjust it to your own nose shape,..look into Burne Hogarth books 4 that,im sure youve heard of him,if not you should be shot and mutilated...jk ..

That SP has a balanced feel to it Jaku,i think its because of the rough way ya painted most of the face combined with the sharper, detailed eyes near the center of the painting..

Coriat, dont be afraid to use lots and lots of construction lines, bulid yer drawing from the inside out....one interesting thing you could try is adding a tone to the paper first, just smudge the whole bastard paper with graphite then draw ontop of that...use an eraser to get yer highlights...

nice one lionel,i would like to see a Step by Step SP from you,i really like how ya build up skin tones, specially with yer earlier ones..make one if ya got time possibly?.,never heard of lucian freud,i look into him\her?..

Nice, almost plastic finish to that one Blackhawk, something ive been trying with some of my recent SP`s...

nite all..

a quick one. (too flat in the shadow)

rusty is this what you wanted? if not.. tell me - i'll do it. you want that one - i'll do that one. No photo - i use only my mirror - yet i can hold a pose quite well (i'm trained for it :D)

hexal - nice steps ahead chief! you're on the right road. try to hold to those axys more - if in trouble with the simetry - make a half of your face and complete the otherone without the mirror. just for a change.. you'll then see those axys right!
keep at it!

clayrodery - welcome. lazy? no good. your SP looks great - why don't you show us the full one? please?

talk more tomorow!

Lionel
January 28th, 2003, 06:14 PM
Oblio: Looking good :) Keep them coming trooper ;)

Hexal: You have defined the shadows well. try spending more time getting the shapes right like the shape of the face.

Blackhawk: I know what its to get the feeling that you should be in bed. It is always damm hard to fit these in after I get back from work. Glad to see you keeping them going though.

Rusty: I will try to do a step by step sp at some point when I get a moment but really my technique for doing them is not very good Have a good look in the step by step sp thread as there are some great tips there. Really really check Lucian Freud out. He painting has been one of my bigest inspirations. Just look at this url to see how damm good he is
Reflection Self Portrat (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/freud/freud.reflection.jpg)

My atempt at doing a chuck close. Didn't really work as it is very hard. Would be interested to see if anyone else has any succsess. I think I am missing something as to how they work.

I just finished browsing through all the posts...WOW. You guys got some mad talent.

Rusty! You're my freaken Idol man...awesome stuff. keep'em coming.

Here's a little something of my own. I'm a Computer & Communication Engineering student and I probably shouldn't be wasting any time, but I needed a break before I lose my mind.

New scans from my sketchbook.......
The screaming head i drew from imagination,..It was inspired by a Doco i watched on Discovery channel about those artist/detectives who remodel heads with clay(or whatever it is) from skulls...Its quite a fasinating idea i might explore it more..

The other is a quick 10 minute SP..just the eyes, nose, mouth and my girly hands i used a mirror, the rest is improvised...

Very interesting approach in that one lionel, great job ,if i attempted something like that it would be complete shyte...please say youll do a step by step SP,i really want to get the nack of painting with colours just like you have....ya that artist is awesome,His thickly loaded paint brush technique is great, really adds dimension to his SP..

nice one clayrodery, highlights on the hair work great, skins a bit to highlighted for my taste though...

welcome reeves, nice proportioning on that one m8,ha i like that warpaint thing, only little thing that stands out on that one to me is the lips, they seem a little to outlined..great job..glad ya like my stuff,im chuffed...

that full face one turned out quite well Ummo,i like it...ya lets annoy Lionel till he gives up and makes a step by step SP..hehe..jk lionel.

Sorry for the last few ones guys. They've been really crappy, it sucks not having the time to do these anymore. For the second night in a row I'll be getting absolutely no sleep, and just when I thought I had my sleep issues dealt with :D Take it easy guys. Thanks Rusty, MCM, Lionel, and others. bottom of face too long

Rusty is Rocking, keep exploring man!

Blackhawk, You look harrowed I know I should say keep going, but maybe you need a break. You decide.

Welcome welcome, ummo and reeves and clayrodery v.03 make another one, make another one!

lionel, very interesting stuff, I llike the dot one alot. Mmm self portraits in the style of <insert favourite artist> good idea

jaku, your observation skills are improving, The sharp white dots because of the brush you use, bother a bit, perhaps start on a mid tone background.

Jester, the last one seemed flat. Think it is the difficult lighting as you said. The mouth lines are sensitively drawn.

Coriat, wow what an improvement, there is a definite 3D feel. Don't stop

ilex, intense, the hair is very well done. ( you can't cut it longer ...)

Oblio, the inpect-teeth-for-spinach one seems way better than the other value studies, looks like you were paying attention to detail.
that's all for now, sorry if I have missed someone.

Rusty
January 29th, 2003, 03:54 AM
Beautifully done Miasmak, you deserve a cold one for those..
sensitivly shaded and not to overcrowed with detail, not like me who attacks a SP like theres no tomorow  :bash: ..the first one is my personal fave.hope to see more..

nice one blackhawk, that portrait would look even better if you added a few thought out highlights as the ground looks slightly toned...

Lionel - wow - mr Freud is kicking BIG stuff -you just need more texture to get there. You're quite close!
About your last one - hm... cool stuff. really cool.

reeves - welcome. nice one - real nice. I would varry more the values and work my highlights if i were you. I would like to read the light better on your face. so.. where's the next one? ;)

ummo - welcome too. i love the 2nd one more. If you could just put more detail into that eye.. it would rock even more. Thanx for sharing. MORE!

mia dear.. i can read the concentration on your sp's :D they show nice efforts - yet i fail to understand - once you have proved to us that you can handle the axys why don't you keep at it? Once a thing learned it's good to stay with it. So... more pencil for you - WITH axys. I want to see those axys drawn on the paper.

Rusty - mr - are you ignoring me? I've done one espec for you!!! those sketches are realy cool - but you should let go of those cigars - smoking KILLS man. keep it low. ok?
So... move your behind and crit the hell out of me or... i'll be nagging you in your nightmares about it!

i would love to see it more fleshed out, or de-fleshed as the case may be :) maybe post it in the Thunderdome thread?

miasmack i love the way you drew your hair in the second piece, and in both of your pieces i like the way you defined the overall shape of you with a simple outline while rendering specific areas.

Jaku that is really sweet! you look like Emperor Palpatine :D

ummo- great! way better then anyhtingi would color :) BUT, spend a bit more time on the eyes like oblio said, make them stare back at you. And pay just a bit more attention at the construction of the face, the eyes are skewed and i think you didnt measure enough...

reeves: Nice self portrat. I know the feeling of bateleing with thigs like DSP :). Be thankful it isn't a horable theoretical course like discreet maths.

ummo: Love thouse colors. Took about 2-3 hours I think :). It is easy to do just draw an out line use the grid option in painter look at how chuch close does it and try to copy him. I have soo much more respect from him after I tried it myself, and I had a huge amount of respect before ;).

Rusty: nice lines man you have sure god a really good sense of drawing.

Blackhawk: You seem to be making these self portrats more of a task for yourself of late. Try to relax when you do them and use them as a way of unwinding. Don't worry if they go wrong just poor you stress into them

Jaku: That is awesome and very scary :)

coriat: Looks good but I dobt you will ever do dark and brooding the yellow paper ;)

Oblio: I tried hard to get texture into that freud one but I think I should have been a bit more daring with the impaso brush :). Never mind always next time ;).

My own Dali. This seemed very hard to paint I just couldn't seem to do it and it is all very rushed :/.

Thanks for the quick feedback...you guys are really great.

Oblio - Unfortuantly, I don't have time right now to modify the portrait or make another one. But I'm gonna try working on the highlights...it's always been my weak point.

Lionel - discreet math was the coolest course I have ever taken...and the easiest by far with regard to theory. I'm still gald to see a fellow sufferer come along. [And if you're enterrested in theoretical courses...try Modern Physics....thats a real bitch.:) ]

thanks 4 the replys, heres another sketch from imagination heading in the same direction of the previous one....Next one im planning on doing the same kinda thing to my own head....not literally of cause, but ya get the idea...sketch took about 30 mins,pencil..

nope i aint ignoring ya Oblio ,it just completely skipped my mind to comment because of the flood of new SP piling in...great job on that value study, try out what i said on that one where yer showing yer teeth,i reckon that one will come out great,..redo that pose in proper lighting rather than improvising,it come out better..bah,save me the ciggarettes will kill ya talk, ive heard it a million times ;P....harhar

Nice sketch Coriat, that one pulled together much better than those others,.Keep on practicing, read up heaps on all kinds of artists imaginable youll be amazed what a little knowledge can do for your art..,plus books make good ninja stars, specially hard covers..

That ones great Jaku..nicely proportion,I like the cold expression ,colours enhance the feel,..that green background specially works well on this one...

Haha,i like Dali`s stuff as well Lionel, great job on this one.I might try a Surreal themed SP as well sometime...

This ones well done Ummo, but theres still something about the other one i commented on that this one dosent have,..Proportion/painting wise this ones great, eyes look a little of,im guessing its because you moved a little while posing,i do that alot as well.:)..

wicked ilex...this is the first one of ya that the forms of yer face show more clearly, well to me anyway,i think its because you never mixed in alot of vibrant colours like a usually do....uh ohh what the hell ya shovin down yer gullet..?,that dont look like a lifesaver..

see you

ummo
January 30th, 2003, 02:32 AM
Hey MindCandyMan! Philadelphia Pride! :chug:

Coriat thanks much and yea you are right about my face being skewed there. since it takes me so long to do the portrait my face shifted from a 3/4 view to straight ahead and i completely blew my forehead and hair out of proportion.

Lionel it must be weird seeing your disembodied head resting atop little sticks! The drawer is great :D

this next one i tried to put a little more detail into my features specifically my eyes. i cant see that it worked out very well tho still looks pretty sketchy...
http://home.graffiti.net/ummo/portraits/portrait012903-4.JPG bleh

edit:

Thanks to all of you! you´re pushing me to keep drawing everytime. Thanks!!

Well... here are the comments. My boss is on a trip and i´ve some spare time today...

Patton_ The first protrait i can see is great, maybe a little big ears but i dont see anything in colors or value contrast that call my attention. In the others... i see them flat, why didn´t you put in them the contrast you gave to the first one? And you need a bit more of perspective work.

Jaku_ What kind of shit did you do today??... i don´t wanna work...

Coriat_ work on your perspective skills, and you need to define your shadows and lights shapes... Try a line work for them to, i mean try a portrait without shading, try doing a contour of your shadows and lights...

jhibbs_ you´re the master of the shapes man!

ummo_ light!! i like them a lot!

Rusty_ I´m envy.. i´m not able to be that creative...

Ilex_ That last one is great! Maybe the mouth is a bit off. Try to unify the light...

Oblio_ that sketches are neat!!

Lionel_ sorry, i don´t like dali at all but your skin tones are damn good!

Miasmak_ keep working your proportions, the eyes are a bit big i think....

Blackhawk_ You look tired... you deserve some holidays so... get them!!!

patton,i know you think those paintings you posted up are better than your trying to making them out to be,they aint at all that bad..the second one grabs me the most, but the first has the most natural feel out of them...welldone..

great job again Jhibbs ,i like the second one personally, both the style its drawn in,and the colour sceme.

I dont like those eyes in that last one Jaku, they seem out of place..

Great one Ummo, proportions r welldone on this one,GJ..

Use more construction Coriat and maybe experiment with some white highlights since yer using toned paper...,works showing promise.Keep it up..

Hey guys. My work should hopefully start giving me some more time again in acouple days, so here's acouple I did tonight, and I'll do a few more tomorrow night. This week was just WAY too hectic to even attempt to get these done reasonably. I'll comment later guys, but all of you are doing a great job, Ilex, rusty, jaku, patton, coriat, lionel, mcm, jhibbs, oblio, et al. Hopefully we can get this thread pumping full of life again soon, I miss doing these and sharing comments with everyone. Goodnight.

blackhawk- both of these show promise, but they are incomplete. lets see something finished. work on a portrait for a week until it looks like a sargeant. whatever it takes. really think about what these portraits mean to you. does it mean more to do one every night. does that capture more of your self and your soul than something that takes longer? if you spend more time on a piece and complete it, what does that do more you? do you lose the moment, or do you make yourself more complete by "finishing" it?

rusty- the perspective is off. flip it over, look at it upside down. everyhting going on the x-axis is slanted, evertything going up on the y-axis is perfectly straight. the left side is lower than the right, especially the left ear. great creativity! hope that helps.

Patton Art- look at Picasso's work during his blue and rose periods. your pallette reminds me of this work. be careful to keep your head in perpective; most of these are flattening out because each side is almost symetrical, yet your head is turned slightly or three-quarters.

jhibbs- i like your style but i want you to try some different brushes. it looks like you are using a primitive program and a mouse sometimes. you are still capturing a lot this way, but show us what else you can do.

Coriat - listen to Rusty! right eye too far back, flat forehead, interesting proportion and missplaced jaw - looks neat though :)

BlackHawk - you're killing me - you sayou "i didn't had time to paint" and you get better each seccond!
I love the last ones!

Rusty - umm... how long till wacom? me curious. lovely shade.

Patton Art - simetry - it looks like you can not hold a position and move a lot ehile doing the sp. It's normal - but compensate with perspective knowledge ;) you've got big guns there... you just don't aim right! (yet) :chug:
