Well Jokisalo
the time in my point of view
doesnt matter a lot
if is too much or to little
as long as you find a rate
where you feel comfortable
if you do 2 Hours and you are
exhausted and bored then maybe
you need change time, maybe
more or maybe less

by the way this last oil is great
feeling in the strokes :)
keep posting

hey, you got some nice stuff in here.
These days the only work I do is in my sketchbook so I can draw in it for hours (often while watching tv). But depending on my mood, this time can vary. Ultimately it's probably good to build patience so you can spend a lot of time working on one thing, but like gaboart said, it's different from person to person. Ideally you'd be enjoying yourself the whole time you're drawing, right (I know this isn't always the case)? Anyway, keep at it.

Thanks a lot of your comment elboy.
You made me think! Maby ill start doing stuff only in my sketchbook fo a while,
studying more, trying different things and start using more time with my sketches.

thanks for your comment. Nice work. I like the ones where you use more time -like the portrait of the child and the guy with the gasmask-thingy. but also the animal sketch. I like drawing in the zoo, they move so one has to be quick but they don't pose or complain.-They just leave:teeth:

Thanks for the compliment in my sketch thread! I hope your eyes are ok. I really like the pencil sketches recently better than the more sterile ones in your first post (the two girl's heads, specifically). Those just lack some interest, where as in the recent ones forms come in and out of focus and there is more for your eye to fill in which makes them more interesting for me. For your question about time taken to do stuff in the sketchbook, I try to change things up. The first sketch page in my thread (with all the profile heads) was about 3 hours of doodling in a coffee shop. When I feel burnt out on that sort of thing, I get out an ink pen and do some studies about line conservation where I try to put down just one line for each form and do no rendering at all, so of course that kind of thing is really fast. I dont know if that answer helps at all, though...

I really like the last three images, fine linework especially the characters in the third last picture!

There is nothing really to claim about, you get the range of white to black!

How do you get that perfect lines in the second last image... ?

So all i can say is: More drawings, please!!!

Hi Mikko!

Hey, theres some really cool stuff here! Good experiments in color there at the top. Thats something I need to do more of too. I especially like the piece 4 rows down of the bridge looking structure and the glowy-eyed darklings underneath. Interesting imagery with the rope-like tendrils flying up from the right hand figure.

My favorite is the girls face right after that. Really nice subtle rendering in the face and the dark shadow of the neck contrast nicely with the highlights and realism of the hair. Id like to see you do more along that line. :)

Also, I am a huge Final Fantasy fan, so I greatly enjoyed your Squaresoft inspired art. Nice! And yer last character design is showing a lot of promise.

I hope to see lots more updates, man! Keep working and posting and I'll be sure to keep checking back.

Sweet sketchbook, Jokisalo!~~~~JadeDragon

hey jokisalo, well i can see you have a brilliant imagination. Good experiments with media and your pencil rendering is pretty good! maybe get yourself into some life drawing classes to get you drawing from life more.
I liked the character design.

overall, this is great, you have really high potential, just keep drawing drawing drawing!

Cool stuff man, hit it up with and update! Just get all over that sketchbook as often as you can. Let your imagination run free all over the paper. I'd love to see more studies and anatomy work from you. Get down and get dirty with your study time. You'll improve a ton if you do that. Facial studies too... like someone already said.

The soilders is very cool. I'd still like to see some of the soilder defined a bit more tho. And the top little "comic thing" looks cool. Very painterly feel. Cool stuff, man. Keep it rollin.

My biggest problem right now is working with the digital stuff, that and oil paints.

Some cool stuff here. It looks like you have a good eye for colors and composition. At times the faces look a little flat, but I'm sure you'll figure this out eventually. This stuff is really very impressive for someone so young. I wish I had stuff like this when I was 16 *sigh* Damn kids!

Hehe, just kidding. Keep it up. Lots of potential here.

i really like your 4th and 5th images in your first post. the snow image is really nice and has a real mood and atmosphere. the characters mix really well with that atmosphere as well. in the fifth image, of the faces, your shadows are looking reallly nice and soft. they've got a lot of volume to them and they seem very natural. some of your pencil sketches are looking great, but i think you should go into them more. get more gestural with your marks and go to town on them. it seems like you want to fill the pages up with marks which is great, so maybe just pushing some more contrast through hatching into the pages will do the trick. i dunno, just some thoughts, but overall, this is some good looking stuff

You have a great knack for interesting subject matter, it's like every piece has a backstory there waiting to be told. Love the bent over hell hag, I think I've met her here in Los Angeles!

yea man, those reds in the floral section of the first painting are looking really nice, super vibrant. i agree that the colors are probably the best part of the pieces but in being the best part, they're looking really good. you might try applying some of those bright colors to some of your grittier concepts to really throw some contrast into the mix. cool stuff

Nice stuff here :)

You still need to have some more practice but you already show a lot of potential. Work some more on your pencils before you move on to colors. The las t few oils are very nice - especially the last one - with the girl.

Maaaaan, I really love the blue in the lower right corner of the last post.
Colourwork is ausumn, pencils are good to as I see you have some beautiful ideas, but still there is, especially at pencils, something that could be improved. Your lineart is really beautiful, but I would like to see some finished pencil art, like the asian girls portrait, which imo is the best drawing i have seen from you.

Just gets better and better! Keep up the studies man! I like how this thread's movin'. You like watercolors, huh? I've never really used 'em too much. But ti seems difficult as crap to get what you want outta them. You seem to work pretty well with them though! :confident

One crit on the eye studies, I've been concerning myself a bit with the face as well lately. Something to remember is that the eye itself is just a sphere about the size of a golf ball. Think piece of latex with a slit in it and then think of how it would look as you pushed the golf ball against it more and more. It would start to look like an eye on the other side. The eye is wrapped with flesh. The top eye lid sort of wraps over the bottom one at the far corner as well. Maybe this will help you viusalize it better. I'm still struggling myself but this way of thinking has helped. Hope it does the same for you!

Keep it up!

you are jumping too fast into shadding - the same mistake i make all the time.. Your anatomy shape isn't that good! - try to get refference to everything you do! You're going better with the head, but the rest of the boddy is left behind, and that's not good..

It does seem some sketches are considerably better then others and your constantly improving...
your strongest suite is definitely in color and mood which in my opinion are the most crucial as they contribute the most to feel and story

hey man, was strollin around and stopped back into your post, and man, that last character design looks really solid. i think your color choices are really working for the design, and the technique is nice too. i'd also like to say your hand studies are lookin really good as well, looks like you're understanding the angles that the bones take in each of the fingers, which can be really tough. as for your eye studies, keep em up, thats tough shit to do, but don't treat em that way. go into those eyes like you did with the hands: loose and gestural. it seems like you tightened up to get the structural view of the eyes, but in doing that, you lost a lot of the life that the eyes give us. our natural instincts as humans are to look into the eyes of our opposites because that is where the most sign of life is present, so gesture is gonna push the life and movement in them. anyway, lookin good, seeing some awesome improvements. glad i checked back in.

Whoa, How have I missed this thread? Your stuff is great, man. Those inks are amazingly energetic. I feel like your fast stuff has a lot more life to it than your more finished drawings and paintings, ESPECIALLY some of those quick digital paintings, they are freaking AMAZING. Its always hard to step back from something and let it just be what it is, but with those you really hit the nail on the head. Nice work!

Some great stuff man.. Really like the 4th one in the first row of pictures in your first post, the two first portraits in the pic with four women and the battle scene in one of your later posts.. I feel like the quality of your sketshes vary very much.. Some are great and some are not on the same level.. No problem though, keep practicing and try doing some more studies of faces and anatomy to really feel secure about proportions and stuff like that so you can get all your pictures to the same high level.. Once again, great stuff man! keep it up.. Peace!

Man, I wish Photoshop and wacoms were around when...

(nostalgic moment...shakes head)

That hand you did was incredibly rendered! That was dope! You're on to something there.
This last piece, I wouldn't worry about proportions...it looks fine becuz there's no anatomical references to say what's in proportion and what isn't. imo.

Rant:
Dude, we're all lazy...becuz we think our "talent" is going to take us over the top.
But, sooner or later, when u see cats your age passing you up like a Ferrari on the 110, then it's like, "Well, maybe I should put in some time...learn this...that."

It's obvious you can draw, now attack your weaknesses. If you don't correct them now...they'll become bad habits later. I'm STILL trying to shake a few my damnself.

anyways, nuthin you haven't heard before. Keep being you and we'll all enjoy your progress.

I don't get it...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/sketchbook/page31.gifhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/page32.gif

seems like these two have been drawn by completly different persons. Most of your work is pretty well in proportions and perspective, but the left picture shows lack of that. How do you proceed when you draw? Or do you mostly draw from reference and if it comes to drawing from mind you get problems?

Hi there I really like the way you handle your colors
and you desing sence has a nice natural quality,
the thing that bothers me is that you should be doing
more anatomy studies, and I dont mean just coping photos
of nude people but instead try to understand how the
form feels, imagine your are scupling with your pencil,
I can see that in most of your sketchs you tend to not pay
to much attencion to the cheek bones per example, that makes
your faces to look kinda flat:

page26 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/page26.gif)

This a good example, you gave some line quality and deep to the
nose and eyes, but you forgot to try to give some form to
the cheeks, this are some threads you might find usefull:

Heya,
some very good stuff, but indeed, sometime very inequal...
You should try to work a little your anatomy, beginning with the face, which is quite simple, then try to have landmarks for the body.
I recomment mentler thread for the 5 eyes wide skull anat,
and loomis for landmarks within anatomy.

I'll be watching ya, i really like when you get loose, which are the times you get a lot more accurate :) Art is a funny thing huh ? ;)

Wow, so Jokisalo your another one of Ca org's talented and more important driven artist! I looked over your sketchbook and I was amazed from page one to page two their is a great improvement, Your digital sketches especially show a lot of work you have some nice oils as well but you don't seem to have the same level of comfort w/ oils keep practicing. Keep doing anatomy sketches they might be boring and take time but will help you imensly also Go the Extra mile! don't be lazy it happens to all of us we say well i see how this pic could look better or i should get reference for this ... but I'm already tired/ halfway done... don't just go the extra mile if proportions are off start over use a lightbox, double check everything the old adage "if something looks off in a drawing then it is, even if you don't know what" which means don't leave it like that. Well that's my rant keep drawing and posting I'll see you around campus !

Hi there, I like yer new works specialy this one
page18 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/sketchbook/page18.jpg)
ther is sumting in the stylization of the faces that I just dig :D

sum critics:
On todays update, in the first one I like the mood and the
pallete is nice, but I think you need to work more
on you stroke economy, think of the lesser number
for brush strokes you would need to depic form and
avoid getting cought up in detail early to prevent that
dirty looking effect.

On the snow storm the barbarian is a bit dificult to
find, bt then again he is in an heavy storm so visibilty would
be very little, Im not sure about the colors I know
that in this kinda of eviro, things go very monocromatic
but ading sum variation on the color temp could give a better
sence of deep, perhaps lowering the saturation of color in
the moutains that are futher away?, some how I like more
the eairly pencil sketch, Im dont why but the snow
it aint working %100 It might me just me tho; take a look
at this image made by Niveb It migth inspire you out:

wolfdonesmall (http://www.nivbed.com/images/wolfdonesmall.jpg)

(I look at others peoples work all the time for answers
when I cant get sumthing right :dur: perhaps it will help you too)

Overall you doing REALLY good, just keep practicing
and dont forget your anatomy he he >:D

maxetormer: thanks, yeah indeed max, need to work a lot more on trokes. sometimes i just feel so lazy i do bout 5min then i give up and go right to details -_- yeah i'm trying to get rid of that bad bad habit. that scene pic, it gonna be a lot bigger sized, and what comes to colors i haven't decited color for it, i have different one on my hard drive. yes i should blur those mountains that it could get the right feel to it :) thanks for advice! And i'm looking at other people's works every day, it's just i get bit debressed 'bout it, everyone are so good :/ ohh well need to draw a lot more...

I really like the last sketches on that brown paper. The poses are coming along nicely and have some life to them.

Your color work needs more volume. Try to clearly determine the light source(s).
You are mostly using complementary colors for shades and lights, that way it looks interesting but pretty flat. If you want to intend that, then it's ok, but you should do some color studies (still life, looking at master paintings, ...) to understand color and light.

Keep it up.

March 22nd, 2005, 03:01 PM
cool work bro. but i must admit i dont really like the snow storm thingy. I do like the original drawing but the blues are too blue, and even though it is hard to see in a storm, the pics dont really convey that. its more, messy then anthing else. maybe adding a some depth to the pic would help punch it out a little more.

i really enjoy you're flower creature, and some of those sketchbook pages with the ink washes are really cool and fun to look at. keep it up!

Haa~ !!!
At long last I got my arse 'ere and a chance to comment on your artwork, Mikko, you sleazy old goat !!!

Truly I love your way of drawing; the ever-differing styles, color usage, perspectives, all the aspects and the whole entity of them all.
I cannot even begin to imagine what is going on in your mind (that I so have infested with utter insanity, HAH!) when you begin to draw. Such a grand world of visions you must have, I'll wager !

Your work indeed has inspired me alot as I have tried to change my very own style into something else, though it seems that it all has been in vain, for everything still looks the same as always, by their style at least that is :D .
But you have great ideas always, one more reason to bow before thee!

Seeing new posts and artwork from you truly sets me in flames and makes me crave to draw more, draw something different and colourfull.

Your latest portrait is a plain masterpiece. Truly seeing that convinces me the most that you indeed have been working and dedicating for your very own art for a long, long time. Thus it has come to be that you have attained a great visual eye and your endless studies have been rewarded! There's no way I can express in words how much I adore your dedication.
You'll be the next Jason Manley, mark my words! :D

Can't critique any of your art, it's just too damn good, believe that, you goat :D ! Keep it up Mikko!

scold and whip me more and force me to draw untill I die of exhaustion, pal !!!

- I bow before thee and wish to say my thanks for thee to support us in our module as well. Without you it would be dull! -

:)jok man listen 17 ! first happy birth day second dont stop <i dont think you will > you keep going the way you are and you gnna do really well man .every thing looks great imo . like prostate said give a shot at a little more depth in the guys pics . shoot for a little atmosphric behind them to give its some flavor .. like in the screen shots . the stuff in the way back becuse of the dust/vapor kinda makes the tones closer to eachotehr <less contrast > you can even throw in some shapes as suggestions and keep them muted for a little bit of a feel where the cha is at type flavor .try it out it miight bump them up a little bit .< i see ya doing it in some might jsut wanna play with muteing the back ground little mroe or .. in degrees so you end up with a front middle and back ground

i think your really rockin and the studies look great .every thing your doing is cool in its own right .

Damn you Mikko, must you be so undisputedly good with your superior drawing skills! Haa~ , only if I would possess such magnitude of color-visions as well.

You show so much improvement and your style varies alot, which makes you great visual person.

Eventhough you never take my comments seriosly, but laugh straight at my face :D , try to be more confident nonetheless ;) . I don't mean that you should be complacent, no hahah, but you should trust more to what you have created, for they are absolute treat to the eyes, I tell you!!

Your human forms and shapes also are really lively and smooth, I like them very much, not to mention the looks and gestures of many figures. Awesome indeed.

And lastly, you foul creature of the dark, I updated some of my so called art as you so requested :D .

Keep drawing lad, you are God-sent !!

A treat to the eyes they all are. The potential of your coloring is increasing all the time, I just love it all. Every study shows improvement and the paintings are getting more complex. Good to see these updates, Mikko! Those paintings you did recently are looking great, especially the girl on the left of your row of works.

Really like the feel to the new brown work you did, don't know what else to call it, sorry haha. Very good feel to it but I think the girl's eye seems too open and cold, like a wax figure more than a girl, you know? Plus the pointy curve on the wing of her nose adds to that rigid effect. Great progress though, man, keep it up!

Check back in on you soon.

Sup man!! really nice upates, your evolving fast and good!,
I like the color scheme of the first portait of the second row
on the previous dump, really belivable skin tones good use
of secondary ligths, the decorative desings are a delitgh to
the eyes I wish I have such good eye for ornaments as you,
I specialy like this one:

page70 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/sketchbook/page70.jpg)

critics & nick pikcs:

I still fell you need to takle your construccion more, Its
a dam tedious thing some times, but belive me, once you
start to see the inner structure of faces all becomes much easier,
for example, in this last one:

page73 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/sketchbook/page73.jpg)

the lips on full profile are usually smaller they should not go
past the line of the eye (in most cases).

your are still having problems alingning your eyes as well,:

page67 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/Jokisalo/sketchbook/page67.jpg)

(thats something I strugle with a lot as well he he :^^;: )

use kevins chen studies as guide or loomis,
dont copy their stuff, make interpretation of their
drawings; you will see that you learn a whole lot
by doing that, duuude!! youv got all the stuff to become
the painter you want to be, now get cracked and go
make sum drawings :D Keep IT UP!!!! and draw daily no
matter what! :yayca:

Yaaauuuu~ . Awesome updates, Jokisalo !! Sadistic, to me more precise, for my eyes are almost melting in their sockets as I gaze upon your newly created stuff.

First of all, the use of your colors are gaining new dimensions again, they are becoming more subtle and clean. You envisioned very well my ideas for those of my portraits, I just got to love your reissues of them to my death :D . Also the rest of your own are mind blowing. Though the eyes of the first girl of the second row, as much as the cheek's shape, are rather odd, but they are not that much of consequence.

The emblem is very clean and has great decorative art put in it, I like the patterns in it.

The bigger picture shows yet again the magnificense of your multidimensional way of thinking and implementing such works always sets me aflame. You've captured the mood and everything so well in it, it is both tranquil as it is somewhat ominous picture. As if the picture told many stories simultaneously, sadness, hate, peace, impending doom.... you are just plain awesome with your pictures. And the style by which you have drawn the woman is very nice, it doesn't need to resemble that much of reality but the shape, the hair does your style alot of the overall feel.

Great action poses as well, make some complete work of action filled concepts too, I would be most eager to see your characters taking the shape, color and be within the swirls of action.

Keep it up, lad. Flame out the pencils !!!

Your sketchbook is showing allot improvement with anatomy and colors. But I miss life studies. It's always good to draw from reality. Doubel check your works for errors and if something is off, erase it and start again.

Keep up the good work!

Just happened to notice that you're finnish... /Hmm.

Actually, I agree with Sam 256. Your drawings are all very good, but I think you should draw more from real life. Maybe just really fast sketches of things. And maybe... think about more what kind of lines you do - I think a little more loose lines would look really good with your style (just an opinion, though). I also like the fact that you really practise and study things, for example the heads that you have on this page. Very nice to look at them...

Hopefully I'll see more soon. :grandpa:

I...uff...need...hrngh....more...phuh....actionpoi nts!

What the Hell, Jokisalo you mad artist! Truly inspiring and insane updates, so vert artistic and stylish. I just can't even begin to imagine where you draw all those ideas for the colors and what not.

Once again you outdid me on the Elven Queen, praises to you, for that was more than I could ever ask for my own visions for it, hahah. Nice to see also some other than fantasy stuff again, you really can strech your skills to any direction, eh? That's good.

The smiling girl truly is something utterly new and a one more jump onwards for you!! Jesus Mary of Joseph, will you not ever cease to amaze us!?!? There's something in the eyes that doesn't look right, or then it's just me, but it matters not, for the whole picture is just plain awesome.

Great to see so much new stuff here, truly. Flame out some more stuff, pal!!!
Thumbs up fer ya

'Tis about a time I beat you up with some replies and compliments, pal!

Since we trade most the compliments in real time working together, side by side with The Moonlight Path project, I don't realise to carry my support and adorement here. Well, not it's a damn time to do so! Though it will be nothing new for you, but anyway shows that I am still around ;) .

It's a tremendously amazing work you've done with the loadingscreens and first and foremost your new portraits. Much has improved again and you are reaching AGAIN towards the divine. Portrait by portrait you show more improvement and a new side of yourself, not to mention the cutscene art people ought to see here soon ;) .

We learn alot from eachother, oh hell yes we do, and 'tis more than just a pleasure in working with you. Before I write a novel out of this reply, again, I'll conclude it here.

Keep up coloring, drawing and living, else I resurrect you and beat you to death again, Ha-HAA! We adore everything you do, no matter if you don't like them yourself. Think upon that...
