Me and a couple of my friends are having a render a day competition this summer. Here's what I've started off with. I'm mostly playing around with techniques trying to find my own style. The first couple images are from school last quarter, I should have made corrections but didn't do that yet.... After those, this is what I've been up to lately. Help me out and tell me what you think. Thanks. .

No problem Sam. The last one I can really see as a toy. The first one of the new stuff looks sweet. Although I'm a little confused since the ground shadow is telling me that somehow the back two things must be coming off the body at 45 degrees but then I look at the other side and there's no way it's at that angle or casting that ground shadow. Generally the perspective on the vehicle doesn't look far off but then the ground shadow seems really off. I like the orange and grey ship, the ground shadow for it is absolutely hilarious. The ground shadow looks like a cute little toy animal. I could see this floating past a building and light hitting it at a 45 and casting a big menacing shadow on the building. I really like the green thing even though I don't know what it does.
Make sure to call me when you get back to Cincinnati. We gotta hang out and keep the workshop high going through school.

Hey Sam, Your stuff is really looking good lately, I think you are getting faster, and it's pretty sweet. Your last few robots are looking good with the lighting and form development, but i think you should draw through more. (especially on the 4 legged one that you sent me) I think you could nail the perspective a bit more. In general though, i like how these newer ones are really showing depth and form well. You've been relentless so far, keep busting them out. I'm a bit behind on the render a day competition, and will be probably until next week... Are these done totally in painter? or any underlay, or mixed media? I also like the texturing you've done on the tall narrow ship at the bottom, it looks pretty convincing.

Great Renders!
Your ideas are great too, but has a Star-Wars feel to it.
Only problem is, some of the images has really jagged edges...like the last one.

Thanks for the comments-
-Joe, yeah that shadow is real messed up, haha, I've gotta work on that. I'll fix it. I'll defenetly give you a call when I get back to Cincinnati, we'll get some sketching going!
-Bobby, yeah I do need to nail the perspective more, being that it's a render a day, I think I jump into it too soon, but no excuses right? They are only about 4 hours though. Some of them are all photoshop, (the red one) and some are all painter (the grey and orange one), and some of them are mixed too. Keep rocking it!
-Scarn, Me and a few friends from school, Bobby being one of them, decided to do a render every day, each week has different topics, the first week was space ships, and the second week is robots, next week will be characters. I'll say if you want to jump in at all, go right ahead! As you can tell, I did't post all the renders I've done so far, I will do that though...soon.
-MonkEE, thanks, I take the Star Wars comment as a compliment but sounds like a bad thing or something. I will look into the edges being jagged, they should be cause I'm reducing the images before I post, they should be clean.
I'll post more soon! Leave comments so I can learn!

hey sam, I like the idea of a render a day... but 4 hours each? thats a commitment!! wow.. I can't do that.. I'm too manic with my creative outlets.. lets see.. my favorites are the 2nd and third posted here.. good feeling about them.. good atmosphere
and my biggest crit in general about the paintings it that there is in general too much black used.. too many multiplied layers something like that..
try to bring a lot more reflected light into your shadows. I see you doing it a bit in one of your ships but other than that not much at all..
of course you could spend some more time on the perspective and such.. but thats been said.. also the anatomy of your characters is a bit off.. hands particularily.. but all that is fixed with practice right :)
cool stuff

I really like the idea with the robot can with two legs. That looks cool especually the way you put together its limbs. Sugjestion add brains into the vile, for effect.
Yea otherwise would be cool to see them rendered. Good job!

Some new images. I tried to pay attention to atmosphere and light with these ones. I would like to take some of these to a more finished level, please leave suggestions or comments. Thanks

-Pat, thanks for posting a reply. It's been pretty busy lately. But that's a good thing. I agree that I really have to work on anatomy, just picked up some Bridgman last weekend. Your comment about too much black used, is that for the eailer images from last quarter or all of them in general? If I'm in the LA area again we'll have to take a class at the figurative academy or something. Thanks again.
-NukeouT, thanks, I like the green robot too. I want to develop it a little further adding more function. Gotta get more function. When this summer is said and done, I would like to develop some of this further.

These are getting really damn nice, keep up the effort and you'll double your skillz every few months.
Your designs are getting more detailed, but you should reference a bit more. A few recognizable ellements could carry your designs really far.
I usually get arround to a nice design by ... simply becomming more familiar with it, like thumbnails and such.
But you should try what I call 'bullet ref' ... just go onto Corbis, getty, google, ect.. any image search engine you can get a hold of, and start typing words that relate to your designs. (Like: bolt, reactor, heat sync, ect.)
getting lost in a couple hours of reference searching will build your mental library of greebles.
keep this up, you should come join us in the sketcbook section.

bOne-Thanks, I did learn a ton in Austin, I'll continue and keep posting for sure!
phlem117-haha, I agree about the ax, I got that comment from one of my friends too.
Kanizsa-No Problem, posting stuff really pushes me to work harder.
Sammy-Thanks man, that means a lot. I do get refrence from time to time but I'll defenetly do that more. I've been told many times that I need more detail and....I'm trying, this will help. Anyway, I will defenetly join in on the sketchbook section. I'll post stuff after this weekend for sure. Keep an eye out for it.
Now back to work....

Awesome work, are each of these really done in one day? I don't do much concept sketching, but that seems impressive, especially given the quality in these. My favorites are 2 and 3 from the first post, and the last two robots in the first post, and the first and third scenes in the third post. For me, its because I like environment scenes generally more, and those robots stood out more IMO. The second post were great also, but none stood out as better than the others. I agree that more detail would make these better though, but they are already great IMO. Now I'm gonna go check your website now.

Ok, fixed the images....Thanks again Joe.
-Dead_Last, Yeah they are one a day, the most recent post, the environments are taking me about 2.5 or 3 hours. The first four images took longer last quarter during school. This makes me work faster, especially when the day is running out.....What did you think of the web site? It's older stuff but, that's where I'm coming from.
-Elok, Thanks, I'm trying.

Hey these are very nice. I like the atmosphere pictures though I kinda wish they weren't all so dominated by a very saturated color. But I think it would be great if you started a thread in the Daily Sketchbook forum.

I think your website is very good, there's plenty of good stuff on there, in addition to what you have here. I like your vehicle designs and the landscapes where very cool. Those coming soon signs make me wish there was more, but I like what you have there.

Hey sam these are looking really excellent - a huge improvement as I scroll down the page. You could add a lot more drama by adding more highlights, color variation and general details.
Keep up the good work.
