donkeyslayer said he could see my head in one of the bubbles. I think he's looking at his desk lamp too much though.
Tonight's crazy experiment involved some bad halogen bulbs from out film scanner at work. And for Mateem I actually used something chrome tonight.

Phil,
How do you get that saturated colour look to your photos?
When I take photographs, I get nothing of the sort.
I've noticed it on alot of your photos, and I love it!
PhilHolland

Fozzybar - I will put warnings from here on out!
Nadim - Hey there! Why'd you change the name though?
krispee - Thanks!
Spook - See below.
7. Saturation.
I get a lot of questions about "the look" of my photographs. Saturation is one of many things that digital helped me explore a bit more. I pretty much use photoshop on every image to alter the overall look. Some cameras offer a in-camera setting that allows more or less saturation. I shoot on zero, but know many peeps who shoot at +2 saturation. In reality it depends on the final photograph.
Look at this image below. Not something I'd normally post, but what the heck.
http://www.artbyphil.com/forum/saturation.jpg
Look at the left column first. Once I found where I wanted the black levels to be I moved on to saturation. I really like the stairs with the saturation left untouched, but just to see what happens to the colors, let's take them out. So now the stairs have a nice tonal range, but the photo isn't too interesting without the color. Adding in 100% saturation back into the photo seems to make it look from another planet. I'd probably composite the stairs from the 100% satured look and the bg from the as shot one for a final image.
If you look at the right column you'll see a rather dull looking b/w photo. Adding +40% saturation makes it better, but I wonder what would happen if I pushed the red saturation more then the other colors. You'd get that bottom one. Not really a great photograph, but hopefully it gets the point across.
Two side notes.
a. I compose for the strongest composition. I used to take tons of photos at different angles looking for the strongest silhouette or most interesting shapes. I shoot a lot less now, but I look a lot more.
b. Saturation is a tricky mistress. Oversaturated paintings are normally the sign of an amature. I tend to stay away from a too saturated look because of this. If I somehow feel the color is the most interesting thing about a composition, then I tend to beef up the colors a bit.
Hope this helps. Now for some pretty pictures.
8. Emily Combo.

btw, can you post larger pics of the Emily combo? I dont know if you can or not, but I thought Id ask.
a few questions:
-Where does your work get published?
-Is there any mags or websites you can suggest to look at for great photography?
-How long do you usually spend on "adjusting" a picture?
-How long have you been a photographer for?
-Did you go to any formal education?
Thx in advance

heya phil,
awesome shots!
I got a few comments though...
I don't know why, but in http://www.artbyphil.com/temp/kp1.jpg the plant or tree behind her disturbs me. It makes the shot look too busy or something. I think it would've been a lot better without it. maybe the same goes for the lamp. I would love to see this photo with a total dark background, it would come out pretty strong I think...
http://www.artbyphil.com/temp/kp7.jpg I miss the top of her head in this one... Nice pose and look on her face though.
I agree on shot 6 being the best...
http://www.artbyphil.com/temp/em4.jpg, in this shot the plant/tree doesn't bug me at all... the girl looks messy and the plant adds to that.
Furthermore, awesome shoot!

Thanks *NL* for the crits.
In the final image for the "teacher/secretary" setup I painted out the pot. There were some others with a silk cloth covering the majority of the pot as well. I did two two versions without the tree as well. It wasn't too hard to accomplish that. I'll see if I can dig them up when I get home.
Thanks again.

Strange enough I got into photography to help myself understand how things worked. Color, texture, form - you know, reference. I sort of stumbled into photography that way iguess. The drawing and painting has helped the photography and vice versa.
Look at the texture in Jon Foster's recent painting Mr. Tubs.

Hiya folks. I've got some stuff to share today.
First up is a strange idea. I took this photo a couple of years ago.

Recently I hiked up to the same location and did a reshoot.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/misc/images/devonshire_05.jpg
Next is an Ansel Adams tribute. My recent burst of landscape photographs has led me down some strange paths. I am mainly producing landscapes in honor of a man named Al Ryan. Also a landscape photographer. Although he died many years ago his influences on my life are somewhat obvious.

On to The Munch Box. This is a mom and pop burger joint near where I live. I think I've been eating there for around 20 years. Luckily not everyday or I'd be dead.

This is a snapshot of some friends from last Friday in front of a restaurant named Swingers taken at around 2am. It's sort of a celebrity dive in LA.

Last, but not least, is a headshot of Jay.

Yep. Phil, you pretty much kick butt at everything it seems! It's cool to see a lot of your personal work here. You really put yourself into your work. The one post with the shot of your friends, the mountain, LA, the Munch Box... it's very cool to see you in there, even though you're not in them physically. The one of your mom is hilarious. Your studio shots are absolutely perfect, as usual, and I really love the shot of the spider and wasp, and the birds in the tree (print sale one). Something about those two that drew me right to them most. Thanks for posting such awesome work, and I look forward to the CD too! You are a great inspiration.

Phil,
From the shot of your studio I noticed that you use quite a few kino's. Is this you normal light of choice or do you also use spottier lights such as fresnels, etc.?
Good question!
First up. That's actually not my studio at all. The first shot was taken in the back stage area at Gentle Giant Studios in Burbank for the movie Ice Princess. The 2nd shot of the Kinos is from stage 28 on the Universal lot for Skeleton Key. For this particular type of photography we "need" Kinos for the constant lighting for the five cameras. Kinos themselves are not great for photography. You'll be lucky to get f/5.6 @ 1/80th ISO 100 with all of those. When it comes to single camera photography I prefer using either my studio strobes, my Hensel's, or my 3 Canon 550ex flash heads. Just depends on what I'm doing. However I will say this - in my Linz shot's some of her photographs were taken with a fresnel spot.
FrontlinePs.10
June 1st, 2005, 01:09 AM
Thanks for the info... When you use the flash heads how do you judge the aestetic look that the light will give off when is isn't constantly on? Do you just know from experience, or are they used more as a fill that doesn't need to be metered as closely?
Thanks again!
PhilHolland

FrontlinePs.10 - Another good question.
This one's going to be a tough answer though. The standard for measuring strobes is using a light meter to determine the light output. You then can adjust the lighting ratios mathematically. However, my camera has an RGB histogram which is actually more accurate than a light meter. So I know take my readings from that on shoots that really require it.
The rather strange X factor here is experience. I have a long history with stage, film, and photographic lighting and am very comfortable setting up equipment. I'm also at a point where I know my gear. So in real terms I could literally just set up my hensels set it to 600 w/s and know how far I'd need to place the flash from the subject for a certain look and exposure. That comes with practice though.

I used to drive by this bldg that was under construction on the way to work and I would always think man I should get a shot of that.. esp. when they were putting in the glass windows or all the guys were on the scaffoldings.. anyway, love the colors there too. good stuff again.

Gregory Wohlwend - Excellent question since I really didn't explain it! I'll have to show you what I'm talking about.
http://www.artbyphil.com/temp/taylor_mels_PP.jpg
So on the right hand side there you see what the camera came up with based on the existing light. The white balance was much more of a tungsten feel and to my eyes not very pleasing. Shifting the color around to a cooler tone and slightly adjusting the exposure (pushed around a stop and a half) creates what you see on the left.
DragonGX - That lens would be the Canon 85mm f/1.2L. I prefer working with primes actually.

that's interesting, but call me a dumbass, but it looks like you made the change in photoshop, seeing as you have only edited the one side; but you mentioned changing the stop like it was a manual setting change before the shot was taken.
how did you change it to a cooler tone? I understand that the stop issue, letting more of the light in, but is there a setting on your camera?

Gregory Wohlwend - On my camera there is something called exposure compensation where you can + a few stops or - a few. Also in Adobe Camera Raw there is an exposure slider that works in stops. The cooler color can be achieved in many ways. ACR, levels, curves, etc..... It's to the user to decide which. I'm using ACR + levels here.
Hope that helps.

Gregory Wohlwend - Yep. CS only and your camera must have a RAW mode for ACR. No .jpgs here.
And to make this post a little more interesting........
Somebody recently (today) asked me for advice about shooting bands/events in low light conditions which led me to dig up some crazy old photos.
Here's the progression of 7th Fall playing at the Whisky over the course of 4 years.

Weird huh?
Personally it's an interesting journey for me to be shooting from a more distant "capture it all" style to more of a personal/editorial/edgy style.
Just thought it was interesting.

wow that's definately an improvement with each year, you're quite right to focus on the subjects, and not to mention the progression of quality, which leads me to my next question
in each year what camera(s) were you using?
PhilHolland
June 14th, 2005, 01:53 PM
Gregory Wohlwend - Oooh. Tough question.
I've used lot's of cameras in my life, but here's what's going on here.
2002 and 2003 are the Canon G1.
2004 is the Canon 10D and not really sure what lens for that picture.
2005 is the Canon 1Ds Mark II and that shot was taken using a 85mm f/1.2L
Before I picked up the 1DsII I tested other pro rigs like a H1 with a P25 digital back and the Nikon D2X.
Prior to all of this my dad had an old Olympus slr with one zoom lens that I never really used enough.

that's an $8,000 camera!?!? good god, i guess i could ask for that for a college grad present, instead of a car...

Or you can save up a bit and get something like a 20D or a used 10D first. Or even a Digital Rebel XT. All around $1k
I make money with photography and view it as an investment when I purchase new gear. The body is $8k, but the rest of my equipment adds up to much more than that.
Don't just go out and buy the best if you can't justify it. Purchase what you can reasonably afford.

Wow. Talk about neglecting a thread! Doh! Big sorry. Narnia is finaling this week and life has been nasty busy.
Here are some recent shots.
First up. For those of you who don't know what the Getty Museum looks like.....
Up the hill, after you get off the tram.

When you pass through the main hall and turn around you see.....
http://artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/eatpoo_carolgetty/images/XE0K2089.jpg
The museum is pretty high up and on a clear day you can see very, very far into LA.
http://artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/eatpoo_carolgetty/images/XE0K2109.jpg
This museum was designed over several years and took around a billion (yes billion) dollars to build. Every area has something to look at.

If you find yourself in Southern California it's worth the trip just to see the building, not to mention the artwork.
I went to the Page Museum (La Brea Tar Pits) with artkitty ages ago. Here's a few from that. Great skeleton reference.

http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/05_09_12_08.jpg
I posted my Alice Project in my WAP in the featured artist section, but if you missed it here it is. It's supposed to be a new take on the world of Wonderland.

donkeyslayer - Thank you. I spend the most time on the composition and final color.
mollyduker - Thanks!
auto_matt - As long as you don't show up at my door with a wedding dress we'll be okay. Yep. I do the music as well. I'm an electronic composer. I've done some small commercial work, but it's more for me I guess.
Barret_wallace - Hmm. Okay. The differences in the bodies of the Canon series are this:
300D/350XT - Rebel type/sized body without grib - 1.6x crop factor - no pro features like mirror lock up.
10D/20D - Elan 7 type/sized without grib - 1.6x crop factor - some pro features, better auto focus
5D - Elan 7 type/sized without grib - Full frame! - some pro features, better AF.
1DII/1DIIn - 1 series body (heavy) - 1.3x crop factor - full pro features - great auto focus and weather sealed.
1DsII - 1 series body (heavy) - Full frame! - full pro features and full manaul control of pretty much everything and weather sealed.
As for a good lens. I'd start out with something semi inexpensive and with a good range. Maybe the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. It covers a good range and produces pretty clear images. It's better then the kit lens and other cheaper zooms that Canon offers. Go from there. View lenses as investments. I currently have 12 lenses and they all have their own uses, but I seem to use my primes way more then my zooms.
I do not have a full studio, however, depending on the shoot I'll rent one. Just depends. I do small product stuff at home and production stills on set. Just really depends on what I'm doing.
White balance is the color temperature of the "white" light. Every light source has it's own unique kelvin temperature. Halogens are around 3200k, daylight around 5600k, etc.... Flourescents are cooler, halogens are warmer. In the current generation of Dslrs you can use a custom white balance at the time of shooting (take a sheet of white paper or any other color and take a reading) or change it later (if you shoot in RAW) via software.
andylulis - Thank you.

So Barret Wallce emailed me for my lack of updating. And rightfully so! It's probably seemed like I died or something, but it's exactly the opposite. I've been abnormally busy. Working on so many different projects does have downsides, but I'm still kicking.
mollyduker, Vanessa - Thanks. Sarah has actually been using that image as sort of a logo/imprint. Lol. I saw one on the ground on Sunset two weeks ago!
ShadeOfDawn - Thanks. Sam Hell is still in edit sadly. I'm currently shooting on a Canon 1Ds Mark II.
vigostar - Thanks man. This is a very welcomed section at conceptart. I initially got into photography because of my artwork and it's sort of progressed from there into a giant beast of fun.
igorstshirts, Barret_wallace - Thank you.
claudeEGYPT - Thanks. I love shooting Toby for some reason. There's a lot to learn about when it comes to photography. Different fields, different shooting techniques, different equipment. However, and I'm stressing this point, the most important things you should study in my opinion are composition, color, and light. Once you study and get a basic grasp on those, as Jason once told me "Man. You'll have everything."
Okay. On to the MEGA POST!

WOW phil, I just saw this thread for the first time. You have such an amazing eye, and I love your portraits. I'm wanting to start doing portraits and I've got several friends who've said they'd pose for me. I'm just wondering, how do you decide or come up with the poses to do with your various subjects? I know a lot of it really depends on the subject, so do you just do many different sort of "stock" poses and then see what arises from those?
Man thanks for sharing all those pictures, truly inspiring:)

claudeEGYPT - Thanks man. For those the face is the focus of the shot and dead center just works better.
Barret_wallace - Why that would be a flashlight. Long exposure + moving light source.
Josiahh - Thanks! Actually I loathe stock poses. That is unless the client asks for stuff like that. When I shoot people I really try to get a feeling of who they are or go for poses that strike a certain mood for the viewer. It's a tricky question really. It's pretty much like asking how a photographer chooses when to snap the shutter.
Main Loop - That's okay. I accept hand signals!
CopyWrite - Thank you.
Okay before I get to the Devil Girl shots, here are a few things I did before I got insanely busy in the last couple of weeks.
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_06_04.jpg
fs_01 - This is a 40 minute exposure outside my patio. I'm wearing a shirt that I haven't worn since high school and a red clip on tie I used to wear when I was 4!
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_06_03.jpg
fs_02 - Morning dew using the Mountain Dew palette for the most part!
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_06_02.jpg
fs_03 - This is an area by a spider I've been watching. He wasn't around so I took some shots of his domain.
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_06_01.jpg
fs_04 - I had to shoot some pyro elements recently (in my condo no less) and thought "Hey! it's time for a self portrait!". I was shooting flames off around 3 to 4 feet right next to my head. Probably not the safest thing to do, but I've been working with fire for a really loooooong time.
Also, I was asked to shoot Quixotic on an MTV showcase night at The Key Club. I pretty much don't do band photography anymore, but sometimes there's money and sometimes I'm hungry.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/quixotic/images/XE0K7395.jpg
qx_01 - Sharp style.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/quixotic/images/XE0K7425.jpg
qx_02 - Blurry style.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/quixotic/images/XE0K7426.jpg
qx_03 - Blurry style with a twist.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/quixotic/images/XE0K7435.jpg
qx_04 - Reverse blurry style.
So I just wrapped shooting production stills on Devil Girl. A "B" movie based on the comic character. It's an interesting contrast working on $100 million dollar movies and working on something like this. Also, it was EXTREMELY challenging doing my work here at R&H and going out of town on location to shoot this darn thing.
I have to see what Howie will let me show. I can't show any of Devil Girl yet and I can't show any shots from 3 of the locations for sure. Here's some stuff that I know I can show though.
First up, lets get some of the dogs out of the way.
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_01_01.jpg
dg_01 - Here's Allison's (wardrobe) dog Moose sporting a nun outfit.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K8222.jpg
this.dg_02 - Here's Lily in my crotch area. She's tiny and gnaws on your fingers, but she's cute so that's okay.
Here are some location shots.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/nature_landscapes//images/desertroad.jpg
dg_03 - We had two desert locations. This one just north of Palmdale. We had highway patrol close down a lot of road to shoot the chase scenes.
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_01_03.jpg
dg_04 - One of the cars cruising.
http://www.artbyphil.com/ms/06_02_01_02.jpg
dg_05 - And at the end of the day.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/nature_landscapes//images/desertcrosses.jpg
dg_06 - There's a lot of nothing in the desert, which is great for landscape photography!
On to Amboy. Amboy is a town with a population of 20. I was told the guy who owns the town bought it on Ebay! There are a few abandoned buildings that you can rent from caretakers to film in.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7543.jpg
dg_07 - I took a few shots of this real cemetary which was on of the shooting locations.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7548.jpg
dg_08 - The crusses were a lot of fun to mess around with composition wise.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7549.jpg
dg_09 - Sun in front.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7550.jpg
dg_10 - Sun behind.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7541.jpg
dg_11 - This is the old church location. It's a closed down church that the crew later dressed with pews, flags, and things. There were a lot of dead things in here. This was it's state before it was cleaned up with bleach!
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7657.jpg
dg_12 - Roy's Motel/Cafe was our "home base" in Amboy. It's not open for business or anything. Only the caretaker and his little dog Jack. Notice the Route 66 sign on the bottom!
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K8167.jpg
dg_13 - The caretaker has his own gas station. The nearest real gas station is in Ludlow and pretty far from here. This is a 20 minute exposure.
Here's some cast shots.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K8000.jpg
dg_14 - Jessica as Fay.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K5812.jpg
dg_15 - Joe as the Clown
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7986.jpg
dg_16 - C.J. as the preacher.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K7919.jpg
dg_17 - Jeff as a very bad dude.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K8093.jpg
dg_18 - Here's Billy getting ready to puppeteer Devil Girl's tail for the church scenes. The rig he used was crazy. It was like a maze of strings.
http://www.artbyphil.com/phfx/photography/devilgirl_mine/images/XE0K8378.jpg
dg_19 - Here's me in front of Devil Girl's car. This was on a green screen stage and I comped in a sky from Amboy.
I have some shooting info for those interested in such things. It's interesting to me for the statistics. They put those features in Exif for a reason right?
So in the end I have around 2500 usable images (40 gigs!). I sifted through them and figured I had about a 98.7% keeper rate. Only missed a few shots. I'm really a look more/shoot less type of guy. Set photography requires a good knowledge of different types of shooting situations and techniques. A lot of low light, stage lighting, and natural light. Shutter speeds from 1/15th through 1/8000. ISO speeds from 50-1600. 99% handheld, about 70% of the shots inside the blimp. I used about 10 lenses, but mostly 2 zooms and 4 primes and one extension tube (used mostly for chase scenes). I tried to use the primes as much as possible.
Hope you guys like all of this. I'm working my ass off right now.

I also would really like to know how you achieve the nice overexposed look, and the semi-surreal cool look. Like you achieve with the small gnaw-y dog, and your friends with glass from way up on the page. That technique really interests me, and as im sure you and everyone else knows - your stuff is still amazing.

I love the grave yard pictures so much! They have a nice general feeling. In general, as always your stuff is awesome! And you have an adorable dog. How old is she? Dogs totally rock.
Do you work for specific company as a photographer or freelance or what?

Eeek. Sorry you had to come out to "just North of Palmdale" (my current residence.) They do make a lot of films out here in the desert, but I wish the trip on no one :) Amazing photos as always! I really enjoy your stuff!

Your work is really awesome. I'm a photography minor, but it's art photography, and I don't take it as seriously as I should, probably because I won't be working in the darkroom anymore after I finish my classes. Still it's good to know the technical info, which I definitely need to brush up on.
Anyways, like I said, I really enjoyed viewing your work. :)
