Good stuff man... I likes it, yes i do...

Isn't this based off of a book series? I think I read them...

hey more cool stuff from you! Great drama composition and color. I remember looking at your portfolio in Austin but I don't think I saw these.

I've got a couple of crits but I feel like a jerk since you might have already sent these to fantasy flight...

The first one has a great head and lots of action but the anatomy of that arm and shoulder is off -- his torso doesn't suggest arm muscles that large. The front axe will also pop more if you add some "blings" of hight light (Ron's suggestion to half of my portfolio).

The 2nd, 3rd and 5th images are great as-is, no crits. They've interested me in both the game and the books. :)

The 4th one is my favorite; great rendition of a classic pose! The rearing horse could use some highlights on it's chest and forelegs to add depth. That horse also looks really thick around the middle; its anatomy and the placement of the rider on his back looks right tho. I think you can just cut back the horse's belly area to fix it. The general's chest and sword-hand would also benefit from highlights and details. The rider in the forground is flattening the image a little; if it wasn't an element required by the art director I'd suggest deleting it entirely. That way you could open up the landscape horizon and have the general's cape floating dramatically.

Again, I apologize if you have already sent these images out and are unable to work on any of my suggestions that you might agree with.

those two news ones are killer! I really like the colors in them. I also like the last one because the every-day chore of sharpening a blade gives that warrior a stronger reality than if he was conjuring a demon or something.

Great stuff Daarken!
The first one is just raw emotion.. and the colors look great..
I think in some of the pics the darks get.. too dark? I get lost on the black shapes sometimes. If I take a close look I can see that you have some detail in the dark areas so it might look better when printed. I dunno :\

daarken
July 4th, 2004, 05:50 PM
kazz: yeah, im always trying to battle with getting more detail in my darks.

mrd: nope, no secrets :O

demon, loga, drawnblud, liquid: thanks!

mindcandy: watching your progress has been amazing. it was good to finally meet you in austin, thanks again for the burrito !

I really like these. They fit the books well (excellent books).

My only problem is 5 and 6. I don't really remember anything of that sort in the books. There were the Others but they were always describe as being icy cold beings with blue eyes. Their swords were some sort of ice or something.

They still look great regardless.

daarken
July 4th, 2004, 10:04 PM
seung ho: thanks! you should buy some, haha. your stuff is great by the way, im a big fan.

endregan: thank you! ive been lazy too much, so this is a good work out.

toaster: i actually havent read the books...im on about page 50 in the first book. the art direction said that #5 they were carrying green flaming swords and the one for #6 did not specify any color of the sword or the eyes...but you are probably right :)

* oh yeah, i updated my webpage and cut down on the loading time by about half....an html version is on the way too.

These are well done but one thing kinda bugs me.

In the 3rd image the horse in the middle has this realy cute, Disney, innocent look. It kinda disrupts the whole "We are dark riders and we're about to fuck you up" atmosphere.

Hey daarken, were these colored in Photoshop or Painter? Good to see you posting again. I hate to say it but that first one is very reminiscent of your screaming self portraits! ;) Great work, and it was nice to see you in person, you were shorter than I imagined. Haha, just kidding.

These cards are looking great. Love the atmosphere and the bold areas of shadow.

I just finished some work for Game of Thrones as well, and sent in the artwork once I got back from Austin. After seeing theses, I'm starting to think mine will be among the worst in the set.

Anyways, keep up the good work.

Nice work daarken. You seem to like using heavy darks like I do, but the annoying thing is when the images are shrunk down it tends to muddy things up. I did a couple of images for this set (I think it's this set anyway). Looking forward to seeing your more of your work.

hey mike..these are all real good man. except for the first one...that face bugs the shit out of me for some reason...i think its the proportions...the nose is waaay too short, pushed waaay too far in front of the eye (remember master wu) and the upperlip is too close to the nose...i can see where you were giong with it expression wise, but the end result looks a bit too cartoony, i think. puppety... the rest of them are outstanding. very very nice. i think you are going to find a new maturity in your work now that yer out of school. i can see it already with these. i cant wait to see more of what you are up to...and lets hang out one of these days bitch!-c36
