Sure is an existential experience drawing yourself, looking into your own eyes, from memory. If eyes are the windows to the soul, what are in the eyes of a drawing?

this was a value practice... I did it with my eyes squinted so as to not see the details... cop-out or practice?

Kanimator... interesting perspective.. You are getting pretty good at this draawing from memory thing...
Nova... I like what you did with the hair.

rad, we're off to a great start!
brain ~ this one's almost abstract. i like where you used the whites
requiem ~ 1. i love the subtle shades. moody without going the normal route. 2. powerful. i like that you've shaded the lines
rusty ~ hello mr. james dean
skank ~ nice texture, great characterization
jook ~ i squinted my eyes when i looked at this one, it's an interesting effect
kanimator ~ same thing that jook said, you're getting good at the memorization
i went to sleep early last night, so here's one from the 26th of june

Stupid computer disconnected me when I had done all the comments..well back at it I guess
The nose well it started out good but then I tried to fix an error leading to another and so on, anyway here it is
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Selfportraits/sptrekvarts.jpg
Nova: I have a feeling that you like "semi-spiral" curly shapes and forms in general. Your second sp was a little agressive even if I disregard the text :)
Brain: nice
requiem: you got a strange wet feeling going on there.
Rusty: Cool. To nitpick the nose seems to point to much forward but it might be the scanner taking away some values.
Skank: Yep minimal, it would be fun to see a fully shaded and stuff sp from you I can´t recall ever seeing ine og those from you.
Jook: I would dare to call it practice :) seems like you captured the forms quite good... Why not try and make it without squinting and see if you could translate your face with all the details showing down to the same level of "simplicity"
Kanimator: Man you draw better from memory than I draw when I use a mirror, even if thats not saying that much ;)

ladylioness - good start. try to use longer sweeping lines instead of short ones. don't worry about getting messy.
nova - damn. I guess you're really not feeling well.
mindflaw - pretty solid. remember that in most cases the upper lip will have a darker value than the lower one.
brain - i like that abbreviated image idea.
requiem - cool stuff! I like the strokes and the second one I like the lines following the form.
rusty - too cool for school
skank - nice. I think that drawing would look really cool if it was inked.
jook - great idea for practice, actually if you wanted to finish that one I don't think it would take that much work.
kanimator - really cool style. would love to see some colored stuff.
Here's a half hour quickie.

Long time no see guys.
Kind of a quick one - but it took some time - the mirror was a bit far from my comp and i was streaching to ritch both my wacom and my reflection :)
http://members.fortunecity.com/oblio/05jul2k4.jpg
Comments:
Groover - super nice. respekt.
LadyLioness - it;s been a while already eh? Looking good. Howefer, the form stil doesn't read right. Try to draw the volumes. Planes. DO your geometric low-poly SP. Use a strong light and draw the shadow and light masses. Right now you should focus on form. Keep em comming.
Nova - sory for your bad days - the SP is lovely though - it has such a nice pencil feeling that makes me want to pick a pencil right now (which i will btw). I have upploaded that - buzz me when you have time.
Mindflow - i know what you mean - trying to fix a small thing and end up with a screwed pic. The SP is nice though - it has some likeness in it and personality. You can enhance your form a bit more. Try one with a strong light and mind the simetry, axes etc.
Cya around.

That thing on the right is a candle. I haven't ever done anything dark like that before, so if it's very wrong then that's why. LOL.

I'm really not good at commenting. LOL.
Oblio: I can't see yours. :(
Groover McNab: I love the colours you have used.
LadyLioness: I like the little bit of ear showing. :) Maybe you could try to give the picture a little bit of detailing and some shading though to make it more interesting.
nova: I'm sorry that you're not feeling well, but I must say that I love the style of your latest portrait. I love the eyes and hair especially.
Mindflaw: I really like that one!
Brain: Nice reflections. :)
requiem: Very nice! I like them both.
Rusty: Nice! ;) Good shading.
Skank: Is that a lip ring?
jook: No that looks like a great way to practice. :)
Kanimator: I really like that. I love the little swirly thingies you did in the background and the shirt is well done.

Oblio - Thanks man! It was a pleasure meeting you in Austin. Although we only talked for a couple seconds and I had a couple drinks in me, don't really remember much of that :D Btw, I love the lines in your sp.
Sharon - Thanks. Great mood in your sp. Some parts are getting a little muddy (I have the same problem with mine) but it looks like it can easily be smoothed out and fixed. Good work!
Ok here's a weird one, I usually use reference. But I just tried to make this one up from memory, pretty fun, just weird. It sorta looks like me...

requiem- that second one is very interesting
sharon5- nice colors, we can tell thats a candle ;)
oblio- interesting angle, its good to see something different :)
jook- nice skull structure, i could just paint a skull under that. nice.

Just more emotional bulls***
http://studiodimensions.com/Kelsey/SelfPortraits/SP7-4-04.jpg
bhuddistmonk: nice studies. the nose in the first one doesn't read with any volume, though.
sharron: i love, love your colors. the brown in the bg could be darker in my opinion.
oblio: ello again, stranger. half finished, crooked, messy, but fun. you post more now.
ladylioness: very cool that you are keeping up with these, you're showing progress. you should spend more time at the very beginning of the drawing, and more time at the end, with the line quality. try to make longer, swooping strokes, instead of short sketchy ones. show that drawing who's boss! :)
nova: you look how i feel today. sick on 4th is fun. i would give you more of my time to comment, but you get what you give.
mindflaw: you're gettin better so fast. try to work that contrast a bit more, and be a bit more confident and controlled with the shading.
well, i'm off to enjoy my flu-some 4th of july (yah, i know you'r jealous...). i will do real color next time. i promise... :P

Kanimator: omg so stylized and emotional. keep them up!
requiem: the blue face is, so cool!
Sharon5: fantastic job, espically on the nose and eyes
cire600: fantastic stuff man! Did you post a painting of your father on the "living lines" forum along time ago?
ps: marko said this looks nothing like me, that i have a huge head, my eyes are more like snails and my mouth makes "grotesk shapes". I'll try harder to capture that next time..

All these look really great folks -
Rusty thats nice, I can see how sure your hand is.
cire600, looks just like you. Nice meeting you in person.
nova, giving android a run for his money? ;D
Davi, Your style has made a definite jump since the workshop, I really like it, your stuff looks more , hmm, don't know how to say - maybe meaty or more textured, less smooth and rounded.

wow these are all soooo great!!
This was in my sketchbook thread on July 1...figure i'm not remiss to post it here now...
http://img63.photobucket.com/albums/v193/maldrin/CA_Sketchbook/ca_sketchbook-046.jpg
by far not what I wish it was, but one of my better ones, either way. I know the anatomy isn't right - the face is too flat and the eyes are wanky...but hey, maybe I really look like that.
forgive the cheezy lettering - i was playing with some font ideas at the same time.
davi yours look great - I agree with nova - not how I remember you, but very moody!! it's good stuff! Nova - your last one is to die for - you know PJ Harvey, I'm sure ... you'd give her a run for her money in the big-dreamy-but-somehow-sinister eyes department. :) I love PJ....
kanimator...rusty...requium...oi! great stuff!! I like the interpretive self portraits everyone's doing here a lot! All of these are so great, I'm really inspired to go do some more...maybe I should be doing that instead of posting...
keep up the good work everyone ! I love this thread!
Best,

Mindflaw
July 6th, 2004, 08:25 PM
Here´s a blind drawing I did (not looking at the paper only in the mirror). Blind drawings are fun to do it´s like giving yourself a suprise present :D
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Selfportraits/blindsp.jpg
Nimrod: nice different angle.
Davi: I remember the weekend when you draw sp:s like your where on fire (meaning you did a lot of them :) ) anyway if I remember right you had an other form in those structurewise than in your recent .
Yeah and I read what happen to you in the lounge man I know the feeling I got 500 hours of work destroyed this year cause of my harddisk broke down. Man this entire summer I must sit in front of the computer and write just to get my degree instead of just draw. Man I had looked forward to just draw the entire summer. Well shit happens :grumble:
Keep em coming
Nova: yep it looks good. The text on your shirt together with the flowers get me thinking of this dude who drew this scysraper but he didn´t finish all the windows he just wrote etc anyone would know from the the windows he had done where all the other would go lol. Did you do the same with the flowers?
Cire600: the curse of the red X
Ni* I like all the lines that made up the face, it would be cool if you did one accentuating on the all the lines a little more like in the bottom.
BRANDISH: the eyes seems a little wrong the inner corner of the eye has the same level as the outer corner like you depended a little to much on a "helpline", well hard to explain so I did this example hope you don´t be dislike that I messed with your pic and nova I hope it´s ok that I used your sp if not I take it down right away.
Ok your eyes levels up to much imho
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Selfportraits/brandish.jpg
Most people eyes make up two red lines like this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Selfportraits/nova.jpg
Sorry again nova for using your pic hope it´s ok, (put it away if you dislike), but I thought it was better to use someones sp, that´s better than my own to show what I meant.
Kanimator:Thanks. I like your :bs: and how you composed it, with the "on top pic" centered with the eye and covering it, like to show it as an inner image trough the eye, and I also like how you worked with the colour. You got a lot of symbols in it, gives a lot of ways to interpret not "making" the viewer stupid however if you want to force a special "message" to the viewer I think it´s better to keep it ridicolous simple with max two symbols but that way I don´t like well thats my bs
bhuddistmonk: nice ones, the the eyebrow hair in second pic seems to be going in to opposite direction, just a detail but anyway
Groover McNab: You´re right about the lip thing. I like that your sp:s doesn´t look all out of focus inside the head, a lot of digital stuff that I have seen at this forum seems to be all blurry inside.
Sharon5: Thanks, nice one well to nitpick you might work a little more with the colours I know you got the skills ;)
Oblio: thanks, heh no flow to offer just flaws lol anyway like your sp I get an image in my head how you lean right in front of your screen to see the mirror than back again etc. Love to see a fully rendered from you
LadyLioness: Try to really finish your linework give it hours if so needed then use a whiteboard pen pick out two places in your face like e.g the top and the bottom of your ear and put down a dot at each place on the mirror. Then get away from your sp for a couple of hours, then get back to the exact position with help of the dots, another thing that helps getting back in the same postition is not to move the chair or anything else when leaving and coming back. Anyway when you get back you will spot errors more easily thus being able to fix them, but it´s of courses important to have the exact same position. Hope it will be of some use.
Maldrin: hey your sp got in when I was writing comments anyway took a quick look and I give the same advice as I did BRANDISH

Man, don't keep up with SPs for a couple weeks and Groover, davi, and nova really start kicking some butt.
20 minutes until dinner, my mom says....sooo hungry...
http://www.mlentz.com/sp15.jpg
nimrod- the angle and attitude are really solid, and working. I really don't have a crit...values are clear. maybe the right side eye runs a little flat on the bottom side? Thats being really picky though, awesome SP.
davi- that one looks pretty much like you, id say...great mood
nova- thats the girl I remember. much cuter.. you are really cranking out some awesome work, the one before the last i really like too. you're becoming a superstar at drawing yourself. IM SO STOKED FOR FRIDAY!
of course, cire is the man!
ni*- i don't think I have anything too constructive...sorry. I don't digital paint...and i've never seen you in real life. maybe try sticking with bigger brush strokes? all those small ones seem really scribbly, maybe you could accomplish a similar but cleaner result with bigger brushes? take this with a humongous grain of salt.
brandish- cool. i get the feeling the features are slightly slanted (and the head is not) though. or...maybe i'm slanted.
kanimator- i like how you push the ideas. you're gonna be at the sketch night on friday, right???
buddistmonk- its good to try angles like that. keep doing it and your knowledge will get better, along with your drawings.
groover! the memory one looks like a big baby faced you! baby groover! hehe. you are doing a sweet job up in here. the really dark black bothers me a bit (esp under your left eye and the side of the right nostril). Its just toooooo dark. maybe soften those up a little (infuturesps)
cool to see you in here, oblio. i was glad i could meet you in austin.
ladylioness- i know you know, but you should try adhering to the measurements better. the time you take on the underdrawing and measurements will largely determine your success. the rest of the rendering is easier once you get everything set.
mindflaw- you should push the shading on the lips more, to give them dimension.
cool portrait sharon, its dark on my crappy monitor though, no crits.
and damn, rusty, you are good. twice as good of a sp as me in half the time....i want to eat your brain.

hey guys, so i took all the notes down on the comments i recieved for my last portrait. so far i fixed measurement (hopefully) or worked on it mostly on this one. but there is no long strokes (besides hair), no line quality yet and not on values yet. so here it is, to me the eyes are really really bothering me. tomorrow i am going to study the eyeball so hopefully that will help some. thanks for the comments

jetpack42- haha, those made me laugh
lioness- one thing I do sometimes when Im way way low on morale and confidence when doing self-portraits this: Ill take a picture of myself, print it out and draw a one-inch grid on it. Then, on a piece of paper (size doesnt matter, but the preportions do. I usually make it 2x as big) draw a grid lightly. this is one of the easiest ways to get your preportions and details right. you may want to try that.
bh- thats cool, I like the textures, but it doesnt really look like you....
davi- fuckin awesome, but that doesnt look like you as much as your last one did.

Nova: cool stuff, I will be sure to try floral patterns and abba next time.
Davi: neato styles in your pics. I'm jealous
Blackhawk: looks cool as usual. Drawing is perhaps not so good this time though. Looks a bit like your face is sliding of the rest of your head.
Lioness: The features don't line up poperly still. Right eye in particular.
Jetpack: I love it when you can see so much progress from pic to the next.
Mindflaw: I really like tha one for some reason. cool
I really should work on finishing my pictures. But once I can see in my mind where it's going. I easily get di ooohh.. look butterflies

Edit: Comments
Mikepack42 - Haha, the expressions on those last 2 are great! Good work
Nova - You're on a roll! I like the ink ones, but the pencil sp before those is excellent. One of your best sps imo.
bhuddistmonk - I like that subtractive chalk stuff, very cool.
davi - Nice lighting on all of yours. I'm not really sure, but I think the nose on the last one needs to be moved to the left a little bit.
Rash Overdrive - Nice pencils! looks like you just didn't have time to finish (although i'm not one to talk :D)
LadyLioness - Seems like you're still tentative about loosening up. don't worry about getting lines everywhere, try to define the forms and planes. Keep it up!
Blackhawk - Hey I was wondering where you were man! Cool sp, it looks like it got a bit wide though. Btw, it was great meeting you in Austin! Next time you, MCM, jetpack, and myself are gonna have an SD Atelier-off! :D
(you hear that Mike? We're gonna have to rep Watts right :P)

LadyLioness: right now your piece is very contour, but not contour enough in my opinion, meaning.... there's alot of depth and elevation to the face that is being left out if you just outline the princibles, you have nothing showing the... 'innerds'(for lack of better termonology). I do suggest doing fred's assignment very much so.

groover mcnab ~ i like the marks too! that's a very nice shade of grey/purple
ladylioness ~ the nose came out really well. *helps* try drawing lines around the latitude/longitude of your face before you draw the features. then draw light outlines of your features, get that spot on, and then go and draw the details.
davi ~ aiee.. that's rad. for some reason i <3 the ear/neck/shirt part
blackhawk ~ wow. that one seems to shine.
jetpack ~ no kidding, your improvement shows!. try putting highlights in the eyes, they'll improve your gaze direction. OMG it's tomorrow
mindflaw ~ you're a brave soul, my friend. np using the eyes
maldrin ~ haha, you were ahead of my suggestion :) good to see you around, man.. those are nicely rendered hair and eyes
nimrod ~ great gestural quality :) lots of confidence there. it's hard for me to nail the tilted perspective like that
davi ~ you get two comments today, heh. much better, you've got the proportions down :)
keep going everybody, there are so many new faces lately :)

No sp just some quick comments got to much boring stuff to do
endregan: Well you got to do a sp where you put a lot of time and redering on the hair so we can see how it looks oh and when your already at it continue with the whole face :p keep going
Nova: As I read somewhere "where fear is present, wisdom cannot be" Ohh what does np mean  could it be No Passes New Player, New Process New Patient omg plz don´t kill me oh wait it could mean no problem :foundlove
Davi: last one best so far
ladylioness: I´m going to give you a cliche don´t draw what you "know" draw what you see! Theres a reason why some qoutes becomes cliché and others not. What you know is just guidelines though it´s correct, as soon as you tilt your head it will look different test tilting your head as far back as possible while still being able to look in the mirror, check where your ears are then tilt your head forward and look. You know as soon as you tilt your head just the slightest the ears will be somewhere else. Anyway your outlines has become better :)
Groover McNab: Don´t worry be happy lalala sorry my singing voice aint the best :ahha:
Rash Overdrive: thanks and you know just finish it!!!!! if the finished one sucks you at least got the unfinished scanned and all so theres really nothing to worry about.
EDIT:
Bhuddistmonk: I like the texture a lot
Blackhawk: whoa great texture
EDIT2:
Jetpack42: glad it helped you too keep up the improving part :)
THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE WHO HASN`T POSTED THIS MONTH THAT DID IT LAST MONTH YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE GET POSSTING OK :fruit:

Jetpack - LOL, nice expressions, your recognizable, but I don't remember your nose being that small.
Lady Lioness - Watch your facial structure and line weights. As it is now, features are floating and not lining up, and your use of a continuous lineweight in spots and/or inappropiate lineweights for areas flattens down your face. You'd be amazed how much it would pop using lineweights correctly. You can do it many ways as well, lighter lineweight towards light, heavier towards shadow, heavier on bottom, lighter on top, heavier on bone, lighter on skin, etc. Experiment with it, try tons of different approaches and see what you like. One other thing I would do if I were you is to do one LONG Self-portrait. I'm talking you, the paper, and the mirror for hours. Revisit it the next day and keep working on it. Keep working on it till you can't work on it anymore. It may look like crap when your done, but I guarantee your eye will have improved in that time. I do this all the time to help myself. It is slow and arduous, but it works. Patience.
BuddhistMonk - Thanks, my drawing and proportions kind of slid to the wayside on that last one. I tried fixing it in this one, but I still kind of fumbled it. Interesting SP's, I like them, a very different approach to the usual.
Nova - You've been kicking ass this month, thanks for injecting some new energy into this thread. What made you decide to pick it all up again? Nice experimentation, I'm digging it.
Davi - Thanks man. Good to see you back in here having at it. Good different interpretations and caricatures of yourself. Same to you, thanks for injecting some new energy in this thread.
Just a few comments for now, I'll get the rest in later.

Mmmh it's been a while i've posted here :)
I kinda switched from pencil to straight ink, no pencil underdrawing either
I was gonna post sooner but they my computer kinda exploded. So I haven't stopped doing them. I missed a few days but I always made up for them by doing 2 the day after. So now i'm at sp nr. 163
So hopefully I will be back fully when the computer gets fixed :D
Good to see some new faces in here as well
So this is straight inkpen and brushpen for the hair, then shaded with a 6b pencil, then added the bg with marker and whiteout for the outline

straight inkpen and colored with ecoline paint. Works like watercolors a bit, but they're very vibrant colors.
not much resemblance though :(

some comments
endregan:
A thing that would majorly improve your sp's is that you should use more lineweight on some places. Try pressing really hard with your pencil on the following places: nose holes, upper eyelashes, the center line of the lips, give more shadow to the round thing in the eyes (whatever it's called in english)
Then I think the cast shadow of the head on the neck should be way darker so the head would come forward
nova: nice stuff , love all the ink ones. Your nose looks long in most of them.
everyone else keep it up

Jens, these recent self portraits look so much more specific than the ones you were doing when I was last lurking in these parts! But.. I wonder how close the likeness is? I heard you were in Austin and I was trying to recognize you from your portraits. I was sure this one guy was you.. I talked to him and it turned out it wasn't. I felt sort of silly. Do you recognize me from mine?
Chemicalli - that sepia effect is interesting. I think you could really bring out the form by doing a final step to pop in some grey/blue/green desaturated highlights. The nose also looks sort of odd structure-wise, really straight but then lumpy at the bottom..
Nova - the sketchy portraits are awsome. I love the two pink ones especially, I think they look most like you! Makes me want to mess with markers.
Blackhawk, these are different from the ones I remember. The face seemes less.. imposing perhaps. I really love your modeling of form, then and now. The complimentaries one portrait really rock, too!
Jens
July 11th, 2004, 12:47 PM
velondra, i wasn't at austin so that's probably why you didn't find me :)
I only merely resemble the portraits I think, I usually don't erase any lines i put down, although there are a few that really look like me. At the end the pencil ones started to look more and more like me, but now i switched to ink i'm back at step 1 I think. I also set back the priority for resemblance for the moment because i wanna focus on experimenting with different mediums and getting more finished final results.

Wow, there are so many new faces here.
One hour, painter, acrylics captured bristle.
http://www.emilygordon.com/emilygsp7-11-04.jpg
Davi—awesome, you’re doing a great job. Do one facing the other way this next time. :)
Oblio—great job. I love the one where you’re leaning to see the mirror, also.
Ni!—come on, don’t get discouraged! Every painting goes through an ugly stage. I always reach a point where I think, “There is no way I can save this one.” But I just keep going. I think you are hitting the ugly stage and then you stop. It helps me to remember that every painting has an ugly stage—you just have to push through it. :)
Chemicalli—cool. I think I preferred the green one better, but this has a nice feeling too.
Velo—that top one’s awesome. Love the colors.
Jens—wow, I think these are great. I’m really impressed.
Nova—I really like your strokes and the stylized way you do your hair.
Blackhawk—these are good. You somehow look different to me in these last ones.
Caustic—don’t tease us like this! Do another one!
Miasmak—interesting style. Very fluid and free.
Endregan—good to see you back. I agree with Jens, I think your sp’s would really pop if you added some dark-darks.
LadyLioness—you are making progress. I would like to see your construction lines to see how you do them.
Groover—I really like your brushstrokes and you have great colors. Keep going! You show good form.
Rash—I like your pencil strokes. Your picture looks like a delicate engraving. I would love to see this finished.
Bhuddistmonk—nice texture. I would like to see you do the whole face, sometime.
Jetpack—your pictures make me laugh because they show so much personality. You look like a real character.
Mindflaw—you give such good crits. I appreciate you taking the time, it’s really nice and helpful. Good sp’s too. Keep going!
Maldrin—cool. I like the brown paper. Do some more.
Nimrod—this is really good. I like the tilt of your head. I want to see some more from you.
Cire600—fabulous colors. Your brush strokes are really strong.
Brandish—I really like this. I like the combination of linework and shading.
Kanimator—You have a great grasp on how your face looks. I’m impressed that you can draw it from memory.
Sharon—wow, that was brave of you to only use a candle! Looks good—I don’t think I could pull it off.
Brian—interesting cropping. I like the reflections in the glasses.
Requiem—cool concept. I love how the lines bend around the form of your face.
Rusty—this is awesome. Only 10 minutes! Accuracy + great style = perfect self portrait. :)
Skank—I like this. You chose just the right strokes to capture yourself.
Jook—that’s a great idea for value practice. I’m glad you did it.
good job everyone,
emily

Ni*: I think you're wayyy too hard on yourself! I think you're doing a great job and I like the way you colour. I also like the way you block in your colours and leave them like that. I personally can't do that, I have to blend everything and I hate doing that. The way you're doing things is your own style and I enjoy it. You should try to as well! :btu:

sharon, thanks for the feedback, i know my post looked really whiney.
i get frustrated because if i cant see progress or stick at it long enough then i dont enjoy it, and that is one of the worst things i can imagine. i just feel like i need someone to show me a trick or two, but practice is the workhorse pulling the fat man of progress...
i think the trick is to ditch the fat man and ride the horse...

Ni--try this for practice. It's something I have done before and it's helped. Find a painting off the internet that has flesh tones that you like. Next time you paint your portrait, use the eyedropper to pick your colors from that painting. This will help you learn to recognize good flesh tones and get used to working with them. It will also help you learn about another artist's technique. You will think, "Hmm, that's interesting that he used blue right there" etc.
I think your strokes are just fine. I like them. Keep it up.
roger--Nice simple strokes. You are showing the planes of the face very well. I like this.
Ion--whoa . . . that's crazy
Davi--I like how you do different expressions each time.
Miasmak--wow, I think that is very beautiful. I love the mood.
Ah, Caustic, finally we see it! Interesting angle. I like the expression on your face and how you are looking off to the side.

Ok heres another, I rushed it to much should have spent a lot more time on it
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Selfportraits/spkass.jpg
I´m really tired so only a few comments from me sorry
Emily g: *repeat mode* hey some details please continue your last one and just refine with details not cause the sp should be better just because it´s good practise *repeat mode off* anyway I looked at your sp with screwed up eyes (according to the dictionary thats what I should write but it sound strange, anyway) as to see if the forms pops (looks 3d)and it did even more in matter of fact just a little envy there from me hm keep going
Ni* : I like your style it´s more "painterly" and thats nice otherwise you couls just as well use a camera
Ni* and Sharon5: If you like each others style couldn´t you put together a thoroughly tutorial of the making of yours sp then post them in a thread, then try to emulate eachothers style while making it a work in progress ( all in the same thread) and help eachother out during the process. Then you kinda make a tutorial that would be worth like 4 single tutorials, cause of the progress "thingy" will show problems that will arise trying to emulate the tutorials and the problemsolving too. just an idea it could help you and others aswell.
Velo: you may double post any time as long as you put the ones you like the best here :)
ION: Nice
Jens:You could try to instead of using 6b pencil to shade, get some ink and a brush then take some ink dilute it in water and use it to shade if your are using waterproof ink for the rest of the sp. The sp would then imho be more unified in medium style/expression, if you think it´s a good idea make sure to build up slowly and let dry when you have put on some ink or else the paper will wrinkle and crumble and stuff and of course don´t use to thin paper.
Oblio: don´t do this to your head :bash: cause whats bad for your brain is bad for your art in the long run ;)

Thankyou, Mindflaw, for your very nice comments. Yes, you can say you "screwed up" your eyes to look at something, but you can also use the word "squinted." As in, "I squinted my eyes when I looked at your piece."
I can see progress in your sp. I think you are getting more accurate. I would like you to try one with dramatic lighting and shadows. Try seeing the shadows as shapes and block them in. Keep it up!

I haven't been so angry in a year.
15 min
http://www.mlentz.com/sp17.jpg
mindflaw- one thing I've noticed when observing people, the ears always make a straight line. I'm sure there is exceptions, but 99% of the time, you can draw a line from the tops and bottoms of the ears, and they will go straight across. I also think you should try to push the values in the face further. Not just with the hair, but the shadowy areas, to make things surface more. The values are very...subtle all around, and it makes it a harder read. (edit: after looking at my own SP again, i feel like I should push the values in mine more...)
davi- i think you draw yourself older then you looked at the workshop...just my 2c. also when you paint from imagination, your strokes are alot...cohesiver and confident. you seem to really struggle with the brush strokes on the sps...i know you can do it man!
cool roger
ni*- 2 sps back, i think that one looks great. the blending and light are awesome, if only you had finished. on the most recent...its looking like a step ahead. a few spots look like you rushed and got scribbly again (upper left forehead). I'm sorry if i repeat that, and it is annoying, you get some really good things going but it looks like you start to get angry and rush (i think i see it because i do the SAME THING ALL THE TIME!) just be patient, and finish with style...you'll get it.
cool i0n, i've had a similar idea floating around in my head.
miaskmak- awesome colors...
Caustic- brave perspective attempt. i bet you learned alot.
emily g- wow, mindflaw has an interesting observation. when i blur my eyes, it looks way more readable, clear...sharp. thats so weird!! looking at it straight on is almost a labor to my eyeballs. theres no focus...nowhere to relax...its like...golf clothes...
"Jetpack—your pictures make me laugh because they show so much personality. You look like a real character." <-- that observation is pretty much right on....I'm nutty AND I'll do most anything for a laugh. you're powers of observation are astute...
chemicalli- (right click, save in inspiration folder) AWESOME! i love the mixture of cartoon and realism. also, the coloring is smooth, rough...emotional...wowzah!!! the background worked some magic!!
velo- good studies. the only suggestion id have is to move around a little and experiment with some dif angles.
jens- the paintings work real well with your sps. i'd like to see you keep pushing this technique.
nova- i like your SPs so much better when you don't stylize yourself so much. you've got a great style of drawing faces though...very appealing. you rockkkkkkk. ONLY 4 DAYS NOW OMGGGGGGGGGGGG LOLLLL IMOWTFBTWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!

Davi: Didn´t intend to do any comments at all tonight, but your last one made me change my mind. It has a sad feeling ( maybe a little tired too) into it that feels very honest, you know the kind that just strikes the viewer (at least me) when looking at it. I don´t know about likness since I never seen you, but regarded as a painting I like it very much.
Roger: Check out the eyes, they seems not to line up correctly (left eye beeing to high up (viewers left) or the right eye to low (viewers right) otherwise no crits :) keep experimenting
jetpack42: My ears applies to that too. You´re right I just moved my head to much and the stupid thing is that I used to check stuff like that before, but some time ago just forgot to do it . Thanks for the reminder and making me understand the importance of not to forget stuff like that.
:realmad: It feels good to draw ´angry´ when you´re angry, got such a soothing effect:cool: Try using real big paper so you get a lot of arm-movement into the ones you do when angry too.
emily g: Likeness is coming slowly, but I gonna get there :) and thanks for the tips and language lesson. I don´t have good lightning, I know, I don´t got lamps to set up better lightning :(
ps: don´t forget to do another sp with more details and a mindblowing composition within your face.
Nova: I think you would benefit from checking up all your sp to see if theres any part of your face that you feel needs special attention compared to the other parts of your face, then just do a couple of pics, where you just do that part, if it´s just a one feature put one more into it, to relate it to.
chemicalli: Stop being lazy, anyway you used your colours to its benefits in your sp oh and stop being lazy

been a while since I submited a finished SP...
so far this is a great month! all of my comments are basically compliments, but well deserved one at that...
here goes it...
http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/sexy_in_yellow.jpg
Joeslucher... I really like that top one, Interesting play on style and values...
davi... You have some really interesting concepts and styles going on. I love that most recent one and the kinda sad looking red one. Way to be productive man...
roger... These are very nice. You seem to have a strong hold of form and value. It would be cool to see a really finished one, though I realize that is a lot to ask for most people...
jetpack42... nice for a quickie.. the anger shows in the sharp angles and hard strokes..
Mindflaw... nice and seemingly accurate as far as measurements. Lets see one with hours put into it.
Ni*... definately one of my favorites from you man... good one.
I0N... very cool idea and well executed.. keep the crazyness coming man..
miasmak... love the colors for some reason..
love the whole thing really...
Caustic... cool perspective and good values.. remember that teeth have shades as well...

mindflaw, yes, I noticed it, it happens to me sometimes, well, a lot of times really. I flip the canvas to see these errors but it's usually to late to make corrections.
davi, nice batch! I love the last one.
Joeslucher, I like the first one better too.
jook, I want to do a finished one... sometime :). I think that yours should have more mass on the back of the head, but nice.
I found a tip on the painter subforum for the palette knive (that's the name!), just had to rotate the canvas to use it on certain directions, I feel stupid for not realizing it before...

i'm behind :[
first off,
DAVI
you're my hero. edit: 6 in one day? you're crazy and inspiring. so much emotion. forget what i said about the lack of resemblance, it doesn't matter. you're getting better and better, these are all so good.. that is all.
roger ~ nice subtleties in your coloring, in the current one and the one before.
jetpack ~ wow. get mad more often please. holy crap its in 2 days :yummy:
Ni* ~ i think you're getting better. have you ever tried starting with a dark reddish background and black lines? then you start adding paler, more orange shades. sort of like this: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23260. i couldn't find the example i was looking for, but i think you get the idea. personally, i'm not that comfortable with color, when i tried this once it was a good way to go about it.
ION ~ sweet
miasmak ~ cool colors, they're your trademark
oblio ~ i don't think it's crap :)
chemicalli ~ nice blend of lines and tones.
velo ~ awesome. you're too good for your age. stop before we all lose our jobs :) mess with markers! they're instant fun.
jens ~ great, as always. i love the inkpen/brush one a lot. good to see some analog around here!
twisted nail ~ thank you :)
blackhawk ~ thanks :) the short version why i'm doing these is there's nothing like facing yourself every day. also, a few special requests a while ago have kept me going, i'll leave it at that. where are you? come back. the harder it is to do these, the more they're worth.
went to the lake this past weekend, it's especially peaceful at night, you only hear nature and whatever's in your head.

I didn't want to reply without an entry, but have been way too busy to sit down long enough to do anything productive... but damn, Davi!! This last one broke me down enough to just say you rock! They have all been good, but the lighting on this one is supurb. And the one with the jawless smirk, yeah.

I will post comments later tonight. I'm putting together a surprise. BTW, my colors suck.
http://images.snitzerart.com/spod/spod281a.jpg
Davi - Your kicking ass this month man. That little spurt you had acouple days ago was very impressive. That being said, watch out for your features alignment. I'm noticing that the axis are sometimes out of place, probably a little more careful measuring, but it's minor. Good work.
Velo - Thank you, I got lazy :o Maybe I look less imposing because I'm not as frustrated and angry as I was a year ago, lol. I don't know. I did notice it a little bit myself. I noticed my proportions are off too after posting the last two. It is a little bit on this one now that I can look at it a day later. My nose doesn't turn that much... doh!! :crosseyed I like this last one you did, a lot of energy to it, the subtle highlights were a nice touch too.
Nova - I'm still here, I just get sucked into working on 1 SP over acouple days and I fall behind on the pace. I need to get into the crazy SP's again, maybe if I deprived myself of sleep again I could do it. I like this series, the mood is very evident, looks like you needed a little solace. Keep practicing those noses, they are a pain in the ass to handle.
Jetpack - I'm here, just busy. What you doing, stirring up trouble I see? I haven't seen a forum flare-up like that before, nice entertainment value... lol. A lot of pent up anger apparently I never knew existed. Happy belated B-day by the way, welcome to 22 you fluffy bastard. Try to spend more than 15 minutes on an SP, I want to see what your capable of pulling off on something more extended.
Jook - Good to see you again. You still gotta work on that nose and facial proportions. Observe your nose more closely and the values it has. Almost imagine the nose a box. Break it down into a simple plane for each direction of the light. Here is the best way of illustrating it I could find without doing a drawing myself.
http://www.imagewiz.net/images/kchen/155176_HeadDrawing_Week03_02.jpg
This is Kevin Chen's life drawing tutorial image from his thread. Just observe how simply he breaks it down. He gets the volume before the detail. Try to achieve volume before getting all the detail on top. It'll give you a better idea of how it should look and then at that point all your doing is putting icing on the cake. Watch the eyes too. Keep doing these bud, your improving, time to chisel away at it now, improve those problem spots and you'll shine.
Ni - Your doing fine man, honestly, it's great practice just blocking it in. Block in it well and then work into a smaller and smaller brush as you get into finer detail. I watched William Whitaker paint and he blocked everything in nicely before he jumped into absolute detail. It looked wonderful as the block-in and the details just took it a new level. As for color, possibly try using more desaturated colors and then working in saturated in spots, play warms against cools, etc. Honestly, I'm the wrong person to ask about color as I still dont' have the foggiest, so I'll leave it at that, but keep improving, study some old master paintings for advice on color, keep learning and keep practicing.
Oblio - What is this crap, where's your comments? :D Atleast you posted one. Now comment and we'll comment? lol
Emily - You do a great job with face proportions and form, beautiful. My last ones looked different because my proportions were all screwy, ALL SCREWY. I'm still struggling on a daily basis with these things after two years, lol. No one said it would get easier.
Roger - Thank you. You've been busy, nice job getting these in everyday so far. I agree with Velo, the second to last one you posted didn't have any real variation in the stroke, it took a lot of the energy out of the SP. You do have a decent grasp of proportions though, it looks like you shrink the nose in some and blow it up in others. Keep them up man.
Will try to get in more commments later.
Velo
July 15th, 2004, 08:45 PM
Damn Black, I just love that! Especially the light planes. I wish in the top left corner it didnt fade into lack of form quite so much.
Dav, I'm happy you're a little happy!
Nova, you were in a rather brooding mood at the lake, huh? I like the nose studies and the last sp very much, did you do the nose studies after the sp? In the portrait your nose seems to lack some volume, but the sketches don't.
Roger, Do you have a wacom? I dont know what you are talking about rotating the canvas, but I'm not sure its a good thing. The strokes in your image are sort of bland and, perhaps because they go all in one direction, they lack some energy. If you have a tablet you can control the direction of the stroke by the tilt of your pen, it takes some practice to use efficiently but gives very nice results.

nova, nice drawings!
davi, the last one is cool.
Blackhawk, I love the colors and the softness of yours.
Velo, nice ones. Yes, I have a wacom but that particular brush seems pretty insensitive to direction, in some directions it only gives a very fine and strong line, that's why I rotate the canvas. I had the opacity very low maybe that's why they look bland. I will try to use more variation in my brush strokes on the next ones.

blackhawk ~ wow. that's the closest resemblance i've seen of you. perfect and beautiful. ah, don't go killing yourself, getting no sleep. it's besides the point :)
velo ~ yeah, it's true.. been moody, a concentrated spurt of intoverted-ness and thinking over things. we'll see how it goes. that's something i need to work on, thanks for pointing it out. i've been so in love with lines lately i've been forgetting about value and depth. keep me accountable. i did those nose studies after the portrait when i realized that there's a third dimension. lovely sps by the way. i've always liked your descriptive gestures
davi ~ holy wow. i'm not sure what could've made this even better, if you would've finished it

http://www.mlentz.com/sp19.jpg
roger- interesting mix of soft forms and hard flat shapes. maybe keep experimenting in that vien and you'll find something really interesting.
davi- the gasmask one is awesome, so is the ones before those. I can see you gaining confidence...alot of it just on this page. keep pushing the creativity, and your technique will continue to improve as well.
velo- the one on the left is the strongest likeness, i think. the only crit i can really see is beware of the angles of the jaw. it looks a bit..wavy. oh, and I forgot to PM you back, but thanks for forwarding those pics from Dzu...cooooolll
Blackhawk- i know you're around, I just wanna give you a hard time, and if anyone deserves a hard time....
Trouble follows me. Eh, more like a bunch of junior high school kids venting some angst it seems. It was fun though, I had a good time. Once in a while for that sort of thing is entertaining...Lono cracked me up.
As for the SPs, I'll go do a longer one now, as requested. when do you leave for SD? Did you visit?
nova- awesome and thanks. i don't like getting mad, i'm not a mad person... the lastest is a cool one, the one thing that strikes me is how contrasty dark things are...glasses, eyes, eyebrows. maybe adding a little subtle shading in the face can bring out a little more depth in the face, and in the features? awesome highlights in the eyes.
jook- it seems you are struggling with the proportions of the features in relation to each other. closer observation before (or during underdrawing/painting) will help clear that up. your painting is getting better though, and putting pink in the shirt that works!!! you brave brave man.
joe- the shadows are really interesting, but successful on the top one. I feel like the bottom is a stronger resemblence. But the top is a better painting. Now to combine the 2...

jetpack42, you got banned from teh poo but there are some changes around here because of The thread so something good came out of it :). About your last sp, I think you're focusing too much on the features of the face, you should pay more attention to the general forms of the head.
Orban, use the image tags or push the "insert image" button and a dialog will appear. Very loose, I like it, seems a little bit twisted to the right though.

2-3 hours.

velo-you are doing some really interesting things...keep exploring, i'm enjoying the ride.
roger- you did a nice job making the focus. leading the details right into the face. maybe a little stronger reflected light on the shadow side?
and about the poo...i'm glad we got some interesting ideas about it. i never really cared for that site anyhow...i can never find whats going on between the page long signatures and huge web advertisements in the signatures...
orban- you could use some values in the white area of the face to show some form. everything really runs flat because of the huge white area where your face should normally be doing lots of curving.
i've had some of those days lately too, davi.

Hey guys.
Blackhawk- awesome stuff.. you are becoming quite the painter. Now what is your surprise :).
Jet- good pencil handle! That last one shows a lot of improvement
Velo- awesome, pink hair hehe
davi- you are a whirlwind :O
jook- Good to see you still going strong. Do form first then details last buddy! I think it may be the jaw area/proportion perhaps that throws it off. The eyes and features look too focussed on like the rest arent related to eachother? Try to do no colour next time and pure value!
Roger- good to see ya :)

Just another half for Blackhawk. There you go Nate...
http://members.fortunecity.com/oblio/18Jul2k4sml.jpg
Joeslucher - try using a bigger brush first then go into details with smaller. Yours look messy due multiple thin strokes.
Brain - more. and more confident - try drawing with a marker or something that you can't erace - it will help you clean your lines.
Rash - LOVE IT!!! lovely colors and concept and all..!
Orban - very nice one - it has a lot of personality. Try a geometric approach - a low poly version if you want. Focus on form - you need to get your form done - we need to undertstand that your drawing is a 3D object so to speak. I hope you get my point. Your portrait is just very flat. look look look - proportions too.
mia- good to see you back. nice one. it looks very painted for a vector image :D maybe since you work with vectors you can add an order to your values (have 3 light and 3 darks and watch closely the transitions). miau!

Joeslucher - some random ideas for you.. one thing i realized in my own battle to get a likeness is that it took some time. it took me a while because i had to lay out lines and get the proportions down before i did the features. for example, in jetpack's pics, the ones he spent longer on have a much better likeness. i can't wait until i can do a likeness in 15 minutes :)
brain - the reflections in the glasses are a great idea :)
jetpack - one thing i forgot to mention on saturday,.. put some highlights in the eyes. that'll help you get them to focus on the viewer [if that's what you're going for]
oblio - AWESOME. great sketchy quality
trying to learn. another crazy night.. went through a few sps, the next one fueled by the previous one's faliure. they got better and better as i cared less and less. these came out the best:

Mindflaw
July 18th, 2004, 08:10 PM
This one is bad, but I made it in 1/6 of the time of my last one, in that one I spent a lot of time getting my head back into the exact same position and to check the proportions in relation to each of my features eg eyes, nose etc and then did the shadings way to quick. Anyway my point is that I have some weird lack of focus when I try to slow and exact...must find a balance :cyberguy:
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/Selfportraits/spsnabb.jpg
I think I had my head in like three different position when I did this one
Nova: For me... here I give you a ballon :balloon: I´m going to create a happy folder and save the image there  EDIT: Your latest came in while I was writing, it seems you have a tendency in these two to draw your eyes to round and maybe a little to big especially the last one could be wrong though I am the mediocre amatuer and the best one at being that to hear me the best muhahaha (Ok I´m no good joker) otherwise no crits
Joeslucher: Theres something strange in your sp:s but I don´t know what maybe it´s the neck, sorry for just being able to do a cryptic comment.
Rash Overdrive: Hey cool I instantly thought of old games then I read your what you wrote.
Orban: A tip that might help you is when drawing the part of the glasses that goes to the ear put out a dot where at starting the point and one at the end point getting you a "aiming point" to aim at, then draw the line in one go thus making it look more confident etc, anyway test it on a blank paper.
miasmak: There is "power" within your style
Atreyu: nice hard angle to do
endregan: Don´t forget to work the ear
jetpack42: What did you do to get banned
Velo: So this how you plan to look in the future? Anyway in the red one I liked the right one the best the left one seems to have some issues in the form.
Roger: your last ones don´t seems to have any construction problems at all in the one where you combine heavy lines with óther kind of style imo you should explore it a little more to find balance between them but thats a matter of style and is of course subjective. Your last one is nice a calm feeling in the style.
Blackhawk: It´s a good one imo :)
davi: Be careful with your arm, keep going.
Brain: Nice
Oblio: Half a head hm, well what you did looks good though :)
Jook: Yeah I know I should do a long one, I use to say so to others as well have a lot of boring need to do stuff atm but thats no excuse :) About your sp I say whats already written, work on the proportions otherwise I think it´s good.

Hello. I hope this thread isn't by invitation only. I've been mostly lurking around the forums since the workshop. Seeing so many incredible artists in Austin left me intimidated and doubting myself and I've only started sketching again about a week ago. I've made a concerted effort to get some drawing time in daily. After seeing some of the amazing self portraits in this thread I felt motivated to try one myself. Now that I think about it, this is my 1st post on CA.
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v348/gcranford/sps/18jun2004web.jpg
30 mins.
Self crit: Proportions are slightly off (scanning seems to have elongated the sketch some), the shading is pretty simplistic and I've got kind of a Shannen Doherty thing going on with my eyes.
Any C&C welcome.
It's very cool to be able to recognize many of the people I saw in Austin from their self portraits. =)

Rash Overdrive: Big fan of pixel art, so I love those two. Bloody eyes are scary... instead of straight down, try following the surface of the face. Still tops!
Davi: You're rockin' me man. Variety and persistance. No doubt you're inspiring more than just myself.
Nova: I love your face. Your SPs always have... a life of their own in some way. *shrugs* I'd love to see a really involved piece from you. Me likey likey.
Power to the SP'ers!!

After doing literally no drawing for a month and a half ive just taken it back up, quick 10 min SP. Tryed to make an interesting pose ended up with a mish-mash of perspectives, hence funny double chin and upturned nose. I know the Eyes are shite.
For my next SP ill be getting a blind, leper monkey to do it

-crits-
Rash Overdrive - ilike the looseness in your hair it has feeling of movement/volume. i also like that you mapped out your zones.
wood - nice i like the quality in the face it looks good! hmm i think if you used some compliments in your skin it might help give more of a feeling of life. just add some variety in colour, it doesn't need to be drastic... maybe i don't just a thought.
furbetto - cool i like that yours are in pen! and quick that is fun "imo"
Orban - good work! the one thing that stuck out to me the most was your lips. they seem to be just stuck on... you should notice that they wrap around your face, your mouth is curved and you should note that when drawing it next time. if it is giving you a hard time try using your pencil to see the angles it is at.
Oblio - long time no see!! :D good to see you bud
Matt Smith - i really like your colours in this one the yellows and greens have a nice quality to them!
lactose - zoolander...lol
lactose - must be hot where you are at...
acuna_read - nice i see you are see where things line up and measuring...i like seeing that, i guess i should do some more next time in mine though
nova - yours are always so nice to look at they just have somehting about them that i enjoy looking
Ni* - good to see you still at!!! keep it up
strych9ine - stunning, i like how it is stylized
jens - marvelous!! great work

Maya - can't see it.
Octave - a good one - more carefull strokes (ones to follow the shapes) would make it raly pop. Mind the ear. It's one of the most interesting forms - don;t skip it.
J,Mac - yo.. nice face you've got there. That's your expression when happy to see me? Good to have you around here too - it feels so good to hang around again.
Rash- nice toony one - now.. more into the realism world eh? like do all the features (don;t skip the nose) and add value, etc.
J.Mac - the pencil one - value is too loose. ear too far back, the area between mouth and nose is.. weird, no shadow under your chin.. but then again i don;t read the light .. and .. it doesn't look like you! :D :rant
wood - great one. your "front" eye seems a little big but maybe it's just me - you you realy wanted it that way. The blue under the eye and near the ear give a "sick" feeling to it all. keep em commin'
fuberto - man.. you remind me of retro - great lines - i know you know the features in the first are "twisted" and all. Try to do your lines also to follow the shape. Search for retro - maybe he still has some images posted around here (SP area).
orban - it feels like you had your paper placed horisontally and the perspective worked against you.(neck too thick, perspective on the glases, far corner of the mouth, chin, etc.) Also.. enlarge your value range. your'e doing reat!!!
that's it! "Keep em comming" - as Keyth used to say!

Blackhawk: What brushes do you use? You must give us all some tips! ;)
Crow Haven: Is that digital or oil? Either way it's lovely! A little blurry though. I really like the skintones.
Octave13: What are you going to paint it with? :)
J.Mac: The painted one is scary! But the other one is good, I like it. Although it kinda looks like you have a big lump on your cheek.
Rash Overdrive: I don't know why, but you remind me of my ex... I think it's your eyes. You look tired in that one.
wood: Love the colouring, but your features seem a bit out of proportion. The lips especially seem a bit too small.
furbetto: I like the bottom one the best. :)
Orban: Maybe your scanner just didn't pick up all your shading, but there is not much detail on one side of the face and it looks a little too white.
Oblio: For some readon I can never see your pictures. :( It just has the Fortune City logo instead.
Matt Smith: I really like that green/yellow one... the tilt to your head makes you look like you're dreaming. Cute! :)
lactose: I loooove the Zoolander one. It's brilliant. In fact, it's so cool I think we should all make a Zoolander SP! :btu:
I0N: Move to Scotland and you'll never have to worry about being too hot again. ;)
nova: I love all your SP's. :)
Ni*: I really like the way you did the shading around your eyes.
strych9ine: The ear is wonderful!
Jens: You have a really nice style.
Davi: You're doing so well, I can't believe how many you've done! Keep going - we love to see them.

Thanks Sharon5. I liked yours as well. I agree the portraits here are all so cool, so expressive.
This portrait I've posted is a vector drawing (using XaraX) then modified slightly for file size/posting using Photoshop CS. The idea was to achieve an "oil painting" type result using a vector ap. Most of my work, however, is in acrylics on canvas and I'm relatively new to digital art.
I'm new here at the forums.

Here's my 2nd pass of the last SP I did. Took care of some proportion issues and re-worked the cross-hatching. This piece breaks a really long artistic hiatus I've been on. I haven't drawn anything in so long, it feels good to truly re-aquaint myself with the process again. I'm gonna paint this thing next.
http://nostr3m.homestead.com/files/SP_7_23_04.jpg
Crow Haven: Welcome to CA. it looks like you've got your proportions and color down very nicely, I'd like to see more fine detail, though. I look forward to seeing more.
Oblio: Thanks, I took your advice. I probably wouldn't have re-done nearly as much of the shading if you hadn't given me that little push. It still isn't where it could be, but it's a little closer now.

Ok folks no sp today I been usy doing one a day but they not worthy of being posted though, but today I´ve started one that I´m going to put some hours into, so it will take some days before it finished.
some comments
Oblio: your best one imo :D
Matt Smith: nice i like the shadow... that you didn´t make it flat
lactose: how do you draw your helplines looks like you curve the horizontal helpline? It is a helpline?
NoUseFrAName: Nice clean bet its a bic pen I second what Oblio said and I think you could make your lips darker, now they look like they have the same colour as your skin
Jens: Ok since you don´t use eraser when you do your sp:s I wont tell you to do helplines, but to use a ruler would help you. You know when you done one eye you could use the ruler as a helpline so you start out the second eye in alignment to the other eye and so forth. Otherwise I like your sp:s considered the time spent on them.
Octave13: your last one is better, though I think the ear is your sp weak point
Nova: I don´t think it looks boyish, but I think that if you focus on the shading it will improve a lot but hm eh you kinda already wrote that. Looking forward to your next one. Ps not harder but more of a challenge :
Ni*: thanks it´s because I´m getting back to the habit of drawing from life everyday even if it´s just ten minutes.
I say stick to your sp your the boss and if you decide you don´t want to finish the one your doing use the same "file" paint over it and do your new one, just to show whos the boss :D
Velo: no not boring at all. Oh and you are becoming more of a jellybean now hi hi hi, no it looks good did you get the piercing too?
Sharon5: Looks good. Fun is kinda more fun than being serious don´t you think :p
Davi: keep going man, don´t do comments, It´s enough with one constructive crit on a sp you like, its worth like a hundred comments.
Crow Haven: Vector, man it must be a pain in the ass getting it look like that from what I know from seeing other vector pics.
Keep going everybody and goodnight

hey guys, I really am learning alot from your comments, keep em comming (the crits i mean). mindflaw, good advice, i need to stop just abandoning these, but when each mark seems to make it worse it's a struggle, this one evolved from colour to subtle black and white to the burnt out made up lighting ones i've done before.
matt smith- the tutorial i mentioned was the sargant copy in the tutorial section here, its very good but i can't seem to absorb the information yet.

So in that tutorial he is using photoshop? If so how does he blend like that, photoshop doesnt seem to have a good blending tool like painter does, atleast not that I know of. How do you go about blending in PS?

octave ~ cool, i could never get that crosshatching thing down. you've got some great shapes in there, i'd really like to see some more broad expressive strokes from you, since you seem comfortable with getting a likeness.
jens ~ my hero. those crazy nights are fun huh? for me, it doesn't seem like you can start, but then you just can't stop until you run out of gas. totally exhausting and exhillarating. don't let this be the only one :D]
nousefraname ~ looks quickly done and confident. make more please, i think you could really push yourself and try different methods for some sweet pieces.
orban ~ i'd really like to see some of those lively strokes you use for your hair put onto your face, if that makes any sense.
lactose ~ heh, same thing i told orban.. the strokes on your hair are great, use some of those for your face
oblio ~ that's great :D i never expect the ordinary from you.
wood ~ great composition, great focal point. i'd like to see more like these :)
matt smith ~ the opening of your mouth is heart shaped, lol
furbetto ~ ha, cool
intern ~ that's cool, i hope this isn't the last one i see from you.
strych9ine ~ great textures and forms.. push the mood more when you paint your face a bit more. the texture is helping your self portrait look good, but doesn't contribute to a mood. but don't stop now.. i want to see what you can up with in the future.
ni* ~ i like blotchy. don't feel your strokes are a waste. there are some nights i go through three self portraits until i get something i like. and when the last one is done, i feel i can finally sleep. don't give up on your portraits until you've finished one. don't be afraid to let the portrait go where it wants. you can never tell how something will turn out.
dakoscwash ~ your values look great, i want to see some strokes! do more!
these are from one night. the grey one came first, the blue one was the last one i did that night. had some fun with ink, though it killed me having to wait so long to let it dry. these are india ink/tria ink/pen/white pencil and brush pen.

Gah, so many new faces, so many days missed, so many comments, will... ex... plode!
Nova - Very striking. The first one feels like it has the most resemblance, the second head has a curvature to the axis and a little fatness to the face. Nice SP's though. I also probably would have liked to see just a little more control in the second one on the forehead. That squiggle seems to draw my eye too much. Nice work.
Dakos - Welcome, be careful of your measuring. Your doing the mistake with the mouth that I've done for years, and that is to turn just a general mouth shape into an extreme frown. Study your lips more closely and you will see straight lines and even maybe a little bit of a smile. I know I finally began to notice that on mine. Also, the chin is too short, especially on the second SP. Makes your face look squat almost alien. I do like the lighting on these though, the second one has that feel from the bottom, digging it much. Practice, observe more closely, and throw us another.
Ni - Nice job on this last one. Your very slowly chipping away. I think some much more careful observation on your part would be beneficial though. Really sit down and observe your features, your face, the form. Your getting there, just really try to nail that form now, get something very solid going. It would especially be beneficial to your noses where it seems like the nostrils keep throwing you off. The July 25th one, well, the second to last one you posted rocks though. Awesome man.
Orban - Good simplification, now make it tighter, blur those eyes and really see the difference between the lights and darks and really try to play with the edges a bit. When doing the light and dark extremes, the edges of the values become more important. If you do them wrong, they can really flatten into just shapes.
Wood - I'm impressed, you captured your face nicely, the torso could have used a little more love though :D Some of the proportions went woncky and the hand and arm became very cartoony and generic. A little bit of clash, but a great SP nonetheless, nice work.
Oblio - Nice fat hand. It's Oblio's pimphand :D
J. Mac - I'm doing good, how are you doing man, come back! 2.5 months and no art!! What are you thinking? Get drawing man, now now.
Sharon - I don't have much to give right now, still learning too much and I don't feel really confident enough in having anyone follow my approach, lol. I just use standard brushes. Oil pastel, cover pencil, captured bristle. Not really modified that much, just a lot of fiddling. Nice portrait BTW.
Furbetto - Love this one man, different take, different style from the crowd, solid drawing, very cool.
strych9ine - Interesting SP, the colors in the BG helped the form a bit, but overall proportions felt a bit askewed. I think just some generally stronger seeing would have really kicked this one in the ass. Good job regardless though, I liked it.
Great job so far guys. This month definitely is a bit stronger than the last few, thanks guys and gals.

woooooo!! :-D personal best i think... all owed to the great advice and cool work on here, i thank you:-)
now the mistakes... the far side of my face isn't set back enough and the reflected light lack direction, and best not mention the messy eye...
N
http://nirvine.250free.com/july11.jpg
BH- cool as ever, i like the boney feel to that one, hope you didnt mind me feeding off ot it to do mine..
nova- your line work is lovely, you naturally use direction to give form. take care of the eye size though, try pancilling them in ligh then put them in when the other features are drawn.
dakoscwash- very atmospheric, maybe try a different direction for the light? side on can really help you see the planes of the face.
matt smith- in the sargant copy tutorial he is using painter i think, with the oils brush. photoshop is a nightmare to blend in (see my last few photoshop efforts) but i think Prometheus|ANJ uses photoshop, if not him then certainly other atrists who are really good with colour. just learning processes, like any other tool i suppose.

bh- cool
nova- I really like the way you used the white pencil on those, but maybe they would look better if you used a white gel-pen or a dab of white-out for the highlights on your eyes.
dac- practice! what are those done with?
intern- cool, i like the background color.
furbetto- awesome
wood- nice, those are looking great
oblio- that is teh shiz
orban- i would like to see some more dramatic points of view, like directly below you or above.

Damn, I look evil!
Made some minor changes and took a photo instead of scanning the piece. My scanner makes the drawings way too bright. You can see that there are in fact a couple of values in the drawing, which can be a lot better..I agree. I also agree on the skewed face...tried to correct it a little. The hair is pretty accurate though I think. I actually need a haircut so it's even higher than it usually is :)
Keep up the good work people

Retep: check out the eyes they seem to be a bit to small.
Nil: If you got photoshop you could try to duplicate layer then put the new layer in multiply mode thus making everything but the white darker and if its to dark then change the opacity level and if its to light duplicate once more. I think most scanners have problems with pencil especially if its light pencil with white paper, probably the scanners bright lamp causing it.
Ni* : :star: yep you get a golden star from me, seems like you went a couple of giant steps further away from the blotchy style that you dislike.
