sparth, you did it again!

And again, I love the bg! Your backgrounds often trump the actual painted object. Those small people running around, to put it into Bob's words: All these creatures living in there, having a good time! :D

Great work d00d, I WANT A STEP BY STEP!!!

awesome sparth... I discovered this forum from your website "sparth's co:lab" (that I discovered from your quake3 mapping's website) cause I found your work really good, and you keep surprising me !
This painting is perfect ! Nice colors and background, and I love this "round" style of those arms ! Actually, it looks like a big fish... a shark ? real inspiring... if I could paint like this
keep posting !

[edit] btw, what is the software you used ? Photoshop ?

nice sparth, but the propeller engine on the left (our right) has some broken perspective, and it flattens it out Alot.

They are both awesome.

I was going to say about sparth that you've got an amazing talent for making few and simple brush strokes turn into something really great! I think it's probably because you have a good understanding of light and shadow.

If I had tried to do the image you posted, it would've taken me a week, with a whole bunch of details that you could zoom in on, but you show me that that's not necessary at all.

At least you must be very effective as a concept artist with a technique like that. Not saying that it's effortless for you, but I admire the 'simple' lines turning into great art. :)

omg! scott, how am i supposed to compete with that?
man that's amazing.

kappei, gekitsu, smeagol71, jabo, TJ Verhagen, Loga4, facezero, MindCandyMan, davi: thanx for the kind comments mates.
piGfreeZer: indeed, i used to be a quake3 mapper, i was addicted. done in photoshop btw.
iwasink: sorry for not giving you enough comments btw. i sometimes lack time, no minutes left between kid, job, santa.... !
you have enough will to go very far yourself. keep it up.
stephen: righty. that thing could need a few extra layers here and there.
¤ N G ¤: concerning that detail problem you were talking about. i guess it comes from the fact that i have been working in the gaming industry for the last 6 years. therefore, the main goal is not to finish or have an achieved look for a design, but to conceive and gain time on every concept asked for any product.
i guess it also comes from the fact that years after years, you become more aware of forms and designs that your brain has already understood. in other words, you do not build any more, you translate things that your brain already knows.
i remember that 12 years ago, i used to make structures for everything, trying to understand how any objects was made of, structures, vertices, faces, curves..... now that these forms instinctively come into my mind, it appears much easier.

my site is back online for those who wondered. sorry for this. (and slap wanadoo :D)

Mr. robertson those propellers are sweet!!!
Sparth, its o.k. I'm sure you're busy a lot. I'm just trying my hardest to be a good artist, and to just get paid along the way. By the way Scott, I'm planning to go to Art Center in fall of 2003, I want to be a concept artist, once I'm graduate from their. But I used to think that illustration was the major for me. I still like it, but I heard that Industrial design would also be really good! Can u give me some insight here?

would you mind going here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2562) to see some of my best stuff I've done so far, and please give me suggestions? I thank you in :) advance!

P.S sorry for using your thread sparth for other things:doh:

iwasink,

Regarding which major to choose at ACCD as they relate to concept design, I would say that if your interest in concept design leans towards character work then go illustration, if it leans towards objects like vehicles, architecture, and other objects then go the ID route. Best of luck, see you in the fall.

Went panoramic this morning...

Sparth, since this is your thread, ill comment on yours first =P
I love the colors you used, especially the contrast between those in the foreground and background...it works very well, and looks great =)
I also like your futuristic design, its very interesting, and I like the way that you do little more than get just to the point that function and design are very clear...its a good technique =)

And scott robertson :
Wow =P
Your stuff is really amazing..great work on all of em..I especially love the underwater one.

Keep it up..both of you!

Sparth,

You must be working on something extra special...

Same idea, different desert, plane race etc...

I.was.ink
December 31st, 2002, 10:42 PM
Wow, Scott. I love those plane fights. I do want to work on robots and environments. If I were to go for the illustration major, would I still be taught how to design buildings and architecture, or environments to go along with my chracter?

For example, like the pieces you did up there! I love the simplicity of them, but yet they capture the essence and get the point across without any of the elements competing with one another. That's what I want to lear. Man I just love that desert. So simple yet, it gets the job done. That's what I've noticed with Spart's work as well. Some of it is really simple, but yet so perfect at the same time. ITs just a couple of shapes, put together, in the right "combination" to achieve a great piece:)

I ask because I want to learn. Hopefully u can help me out here, thanks:)

scott! you thought i was going to let it die? no way! :D:D:D
i had pretty much work during christmas, tha bad thing is that i had these vehicles in mind, instead of being concentrated.
i'll definitely catch up in the next days!

your designs there are fabulous, i have no words for these, especially for the last ones.

a little blimp/vessel sketch i did during a few minutes, scanned, and very fast color in photoshop. it's nothing big, but i kind a liked it.

fantabulous my friend, just fantabulous! I love it all Scott. Great stuff.
Do u use references? probably not...
What program r u using to paint this?
And last of all, how long do they take you?

Scott Robertson
January 2nd, 2003, 07:10 PM
iwasink,
Occasionally I use reference when it makes sense and I have it.
All of my renderings are currently done in PS 7.
The pieces range in time based on how into the subject I am and how complex a piece it is. Simple stuff like a vehicle against a simple background, about two to three hours like the submarine and the orange guy in the clouds. For the bigger pieces with multiple vehicles and a full environment you can spend as long as you like, the last two were done in about 4 hours each.

Here is this afternoon's effort....This might be the last one for a bit, I've have to get back to the paying work!

Both of your works are awesome!

I saw Scotts website a while back and was amazed! I really wish I could attend Art Center, but its impossible! I wish I could take one of Scotts classes!

Sparth - Where did you go to school (if you did go to school for art/design)

Im trying to find a school that can help me learn to create things like the ones in this thread, but I have no idea where I could find a good school that I could actually attend!

Great work guys I always like to see stuff like this!

Scott:

Just out of curiosity, I noticed the consistency of your propellers in motion. Do you have a special technique that you like to use to get the same results? I know there're many ways one can approach this, but I kind of like the realism of that motion blur accented with a HGL tone on top.

By the way, (it goes without saying) amazing work!

wow, i'm deeply impressed...

it's a mysterious to me how you draw these correct perspectives, shapes, etc...
... eh, i'll just keep on practicing :D

(oh, and sorry for that bad english..)

Scott Robertson
January 6th, 2003, 10:35 AM
Thanks everyone. I'm afraid my prop posting will slow now as I'm back to the real work this week.

ZeeWire,

Regarding your prop building question, they are really easy to do. Here are the steps I used.

1. Render up a single blade in front view (no perspective), on its own layer.
2. Duplicate that layer for as many blades as you want to have in your propeller, 3, 4, 5 etc...
3. Rotate the separate layers to the correct angles and move them to create one finished propeller rendering on a single layer.
4. Dupilcate this layer.
5. Use the circle selection tool to select your finished propeller. You need to do this because when you apply a radial blur filter set to spin it spins around the center of your selection. If you just apply the radial blur filter and your prop is not in the exact center of your rendering it will not give you the desired effect. By selecting it you do not have to have it set to the center of your image.
6. Another thing to do is erase the propeller a bit at the ends of each blade as they are spinning faster than the center part.
7. After you have this master propeller built you can easily duplicate it and transform distort it into perspective for use in any future renderings.
8. After you drop it into perpsective you can play with the transparency of the prop layers to acheive different levels of visiblilty of your prop.
9. Also you can click on the preserve transpaency button to repaint and change the blade tip colors etc.

Hope this helps.
