This is honestly the best art book I have ever read... It answers every single question I had and tons more.
I've been doing oil painting and this is a holy grail for me. My biggest question was how should you start a painting.. well he answered it.. very well too. He also talks about edges which was another one of my concerns.
Almost every page has works by schmid.. just astonishing pieces (to me).. they are the type of art I hope to work up to some day.
In my opinion, DEFINITELY worth the $106.

The videos were pretty good too.

I bought it directly from his site (I called the number on richardschmid.com because the online form didnt seem to work). I recieved it in a few days all nice and shiny in plastic wrap.
Right now im on the chapter on edges... just fantastic info in my opinion. I like it because its just 200 pages of anadultred info and pure learning. its not 10 pages of redundancy, 5 pages of some shitty illustrations, 10 pages of just half explained vague concepts etc.
I have a question. For my birthday I want to ask for the captains portrait video. How was that? (or any of his other videos).
If the book was worth the price (in your opinion), do you believe the videos were also worth it? I love his portraits and I definitely want to buy that video if they are good.
Thanks

I read a lot of good critics about this book on various threads, but I wonder if it's a good buy for someone who doesn't paint yet and would just like to improve in the drawing field. Can someone answer that ? Is the book mostly about painting techniques ?

Well the book is called "everything I know about painting," so obviously that's what the majority of the book is about , however there is one chapter about drawing. That's paint-related drawing though, and it would not be worth it at all to buy that book just for 1 chapter. I would buy a book like drawing on the right side of the brain (which I've heard is very good), or ask on CA which drawing books they recommend (or better yet, search). When you decide to start painting, THEN buy Alla Prima.
