Hey all, I've been hitting up some comic book forums trying to get feedback, and having little luck getting valid critiques. Everyone here seems to have a lot to say, so here's the cover for a comic i'm pitching at Wizard World Chicago in August. Also go to my website ( www.josholland.com ) and tell me what you like or don't like. I just want to see what people are responding to.
Thanks,
Josh

Seriously man, get rid of the lens flare. Other than that, good stuff.
Try painting on the flare, or extreme light.. Make it look more like part of the picture.

Yes get rid of the flare! It's like a smear of feces on a van gogh :(
Other than the obvious, it's great. I was going to right click> save but there's just one thing you must do

it has been said about 10 times now but sigh remove the lensflare.
His waist seems a bit narrow compared to the chest, and there this sudden color color change on the chest
love the background tho

Why is is hair like that? It definately takes away from the whole picture, it being the lightest part (and given no explanation [if it was on fire, maybe?]). And what others said, it being too symmetrical on the body. Nice background.

In the peice above I really like the backlit edges, they look great.
I like your site - especially the sketch book, it loads fast and it's fun.

well I think this cover is very nice, the pose is alittle stiff, but that has been said before, and I won't mention the ens-lay are-flay cause i'm sure you've already gotten the point. I don't think the hair is as bad as MOS667 said it was, i think it looks fine. And the background is clearly the best part of the picture, great job there.
Oh and one more thing that i don't know whether it's just my taste or not, but to me the green accents in the skintone make this piece seem almost too colorful. I guess what i'm trying to say is that in a night scene or a scene that takes place in dim light everything loses saturation and shifts significantly to the cool side of the color wheel, unless lit by another scource, as this clearly is. (so far this is what the pic is already doing), But when the separate light scource does illuminate other things, it will tint whatever its lighting and therefore the forehead lightscource's color(which you should probably draw by hand ;) ) should probably have a greater impact on the skin color.
Man I was rambling there for a second and I don't even know if i said anything coherent. Oh well, it's just my opinion in any case.
As for the stuff on the website, it's clear you have a very good personal style going, and the website itself is pretty slick, I wish I had more of a crit. hehe keep it up

The concept is good and I like the contrast.

Loose it.

LENS FLARE :a!:
Did you use the dodge/burn tool ? I see that you toned down the newer logofied version, that's good.
Now on the logo since you asked : It looks really grungy which I like, but it might not help the readability.

Ok crit on logo, I think it reads:
"Ogari" or "Ogart"
I think you could rework the last letter more. The "O" is great. Also checked out your website, great sketches! :)

I love how constructive the lensflare criticism is, and despite the numerous comments about it people seem to still find it worth stating. Thank you, your comments are really helping me to become a better artist.....

its alright, the lens flare has become somewhat of a standing joke here in ca and we do it to death, its alright there just kidding around. We get some really retarded stuff around here sometimes, the photoshop lensflare is just the most overused filter vere, especially b completenoobs. Hey be thankful your gettin alot of responses and theres good advice that comes with the OMG LOENZFLARE 0_0 There just havin fun. :confident Dont take it seriously.

Hey if you haven't already, check out this guy's website. Personally, I think this cover is one of my least favorite pieces of the bunch. There's some stuff on the site that is just plain sick. I love your style, man, keep it up and post here more often. I'm also real curious about the way you work, and the different rendering syles you utilize, so if you get a chance to show us a WIP or something like that, I think it'd be a great addition to your site.

Its cool, I have very thick skin. I got that the lens flare thing is a joke, but I just want some real criticism. As for how I work I mainly do either all Adobe Illustrator work or a mixed media of pencil lines with digital paints and photoshop touches (and contrary to popular belief, i'm not a big fan of the lensflare. just thought it might be appropriate for once. :nohope: ) Anyway, thanks for the comments!

The background is well done.
As Benz was saying I think, the picture is off balance, especially after you added the text.
The text is very hard to read.
As far as the lense flare comments :S not being really constructive. I agree with everyone on losing it, and here is why:
1. It draws my eye to it and blinds me. That may be why everyone is so focused on it, there is no choice.
2. Obvious filters in many cases seem to detract from the professional look of a piece (lens flare being the cliche one). If you are presenting this to a company, I'd take the advice of the others and remove it.
Ok so there are the reasons that I feel it should be removed, and the big question is on everyone's mind... do you plan to? (no, you don't have to, just an overall suggestion :bashful: ) I suppose a lot of us really would like to see and critique the piece without it.
I'm going to check out your website now :) !

I checked your website, really cool stuff. I love the popart kinda style. Your sketchbook is awesome. you should post specific pieces to get crits on them.. The colors and painting style on that piece you posted are really nice. you could make the guys chest look more like skin and less like paint thhough. the glow from the logo text might be too white. also, you should get rid of the lensflare.

this cover looks really good. I like the colors and the logo a lot. The lens flare bothers me a little but it is not too bad. Mostly his hair is lit very bright... at first glance i thought he might be bald.. on second glance i still wasnt very sure... if hes supposed to be bald then some people might assume hes not and vice versa... i think if you worked on the silhouette of the hair a little it would make it a little more clear.
As for your website it is great! You have a lot of great artwork.
