Scanner trouble

I've used the scanner to scan really colorful images, and it always worked wonderfully. Now I'm trying to scan some of my sketches in pencil and it comes out looking either horrible or like I drew it in charcoal.

If someone could help me out, that would be great! My scanner is an HP Scanjet 2200c...

It's probably the brightness setting you're using on the scanner, I had that problem once, and the soloution was that it was too dark on the brightness...

Nevermind, I fixed it. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

i've found a black piece of paper behind the sketch when you scan can help with that...
