hey everyone,
i called Art Center about the deadline question and no, Ent D is NOT under the rolling applications system... so for the people who are worried, you guys still have time! the window to submit portfolios for Ent D major is Feb 1-15 as stated on the ACCD website > Dates + Deadlines :
Entertainment Design has a priority deadline of February 1st through February 15th, and students enter in the Fall Term only.

Do I have to register/pay a fee for any of the classes or can I just walk on in? I'm a high school student

what workshop are you referring to? they don't required anything just to be an student of day program or artcenter at night but they never ask, a friend of mine doesn't go there but goes to all the workshops.

I was referring to the figure drawing and painting workshops. Is your friend in college? I just emailed the help desk and got responses from 5 different people, they said the workshops are only open to those who graduated high school. =(
They redirected me to the Saturday High program, but I can't start any classes till mid-February which bummed me out pretty hard since portfolios are all due by then and I could use more work on my figures.
Good to know though, I'm currently taking figure drawing at vision 21 for like 860 dollars for 10 weeks (30 hours)... And I see Saturday High is like 250. FML

well he goes to pcc, but he still goes to the workshops at artcenter since nobody asks anything, also $860 for figure drawing sessions is really pricey, red engine studios holds figure drawing sessions every saturday for $20 (open to anyone who wants to go).

About red engine, I got said a 10 week figure drawing course is $595.

Only reason I chose vision 21 is because it's a 10 minute walk from my house, while Red Engine is about a 40 minute drive and I don't have my license yet.

i'm not talking about a class, it's just workshops every saturday or sunday, you just go in and draw the model, of course it might be a bit advance since it is not a class.

It's been a while but... I believe I picked a few of the really popular artists and illustrators and talked about how they've influenced a whole generation of concept artists. Guys like Craig Mullins, Sparth, etc.
For the other topic I chose the one about taking a risk in life and having it pay off. I wrote about having enrolled in some college art courses while I was still in high school. I was totally unprepared for them but I struggled through it and it opened up a lot of new opportunities that I really took advantage of later.
Neither of these essays were too long, probably just slightly over the requirement they have. I would recommend spending as much time as possible on the portfolio itself. I know it sounds obvious but the two most noticeable traits I've seen of accepted entertainment design portfolios are a) high quality work and b) massive quantity. Subject matter and style are pretty variable, it just has to look good and like you spent a lot of time on it.
It takes a looong time to produce a quality piece and to produce multiple quality pieces takes even longer. But that will all be really obvious in the portfolio so that's where I would focus.
By the way, if anyone needs a place to stay for the upcoming spring term and beyond, I'm in need of a roommate. It's 1br/1bath, located near Old Town Pasadena, 850/mo. Call me or text 858-717-9899

For anyone who's applying to Ent Design at Art Center, I think they're opening applications for Spring term too. At least that's what I heard at school. They're in the process of getting a new chair for the department so lots of changes are happening.
To clear up confusions between Ent Design and Ent Arts, Ent Design is geared more for gaming and live action. Ent Arts is geared for animation and storytelling. That's not to say you can't do animation if you graduate from Ent Design or vice versa if you graduate from Ent Arts.
Because there's going to be a new chair for Ent Design, it's becoming easier for both to take classes in each other's departments.

Anyone know if your chances of being accepted into ED raises if you submit your portfolio earlier? I plan to use December as more practice time and January+the rest on the actual portfolio (of course the still life/figure drawing portion will be complete before then)

yeah it was 3 days after i sent it, so i got my acceptance letter weeks before the set time, the portfolio is only to see who gets scholarships and who doesn't, cuz frankly i've seen student who really don't know how to draw if their lives depend on it (this is on the illustration department) and who can do figure drawing for shit.

JUST ON A SIDENOTE...
holy crap, did I hear vision 21? I went to that place and I'm not sure if it was the specific location that I went to or what but I had a horrible experience with the guy who was in charge. I created only about... 4 portfolio pieces there (out of 19 pieces), figure models came infrequently, had this weird period where they cancelled the figure drawing class I was able to go to, etc... --they then used me as advertisement after I got into art colleges......... even though the place did not help me at all...
@marisahhh: Uhh, not sure if they still have the same topic. The 3 top artists, and the other question?
One of them I wrote about how my definition of art expanded after taking a high school art class (art isn't just about imitation & skill.. blah blah). And for the 3 favorite famous artists one I wrote about Jenny Saville and these two other guys who I kinda forgot the name of. One of my essays was really horrible because I wrote it two hours before the scholarship deadline... so don't stress too much about it but make it count O:

It's kinda funny since when I went there at first wanting to take the figure drawing class the guy in charge kept pressing me to take more classes, making it sound like colleges wouldn't accept me if I didn't have their help. He sure convinced my mom, she really was really ready to pay 6000$ worth :al::ao::al: and I'm like what a load of bull- no.
I only took figure drawing classes at Vision since I failed up to sign up for the much cheaper ones at Saturday High. I already had the drawing ability (thank you andrew loomis, thank you burne hogarth /salute), so after like the 3rd figure drawing class I was cruising through portfolio pieces and the instructor left me alone most of the time to do my own thing. The people in charge did take my picture, so yeah I guess they'll put me on the advertising list if I get into art school. The thought of having my success claimed is really irritating so I know what you mean.

Charge them for using your work, or just go there and say you didn't allow your work to be used.

It's more like they put your face and the colleges you got into/scholarships you were awarded on their advertising flier. Which is essentially stating, "He took classes here, and that's why he got into blah blah". Pretty misleading

Hello
I have been trying to find some info for the ACCD masters course.
The MFA in Media design.
Does anyone know anything about it? Or what one should focus on
to send in the portfolio?
I'm only seeing entertainment, industrial, concept, illustation and fine art everywhere, nothing written about media design of what kind of things they look for in it.
Most of my work is somewhat different from all the above categories but includes all of the above so I'm really confused... in the brochure it mentions
its a combination of everything which is what I have..in my portfolio and BS degree + GDD in communication design.
However Providing design processes for most of the work is not possible because I worked with groups and plans on white boards..
Anyone?

I have basically the same question, too. I am actually from an art program at a Cal State school, and am wondering is there any way I can transfer over to Entertainment Design that would correlate with the classes taken at Cal State or do I have to start from scratch at art center?
Has anybody or know anybody who had been through this predicament before?

just do what i'm gonna do: i'm working right now to save money, but my plan is go to calstate long beach (it is said they have a really good illustration program, outside of a private art school) and then take concept design classes at places like the concept design academy, red engine studio, or atalier programs to complement my skills, this tip was giving to me by actual artcenter teachers.
after all it doesn't matter the school you went to but the skills of the artist that counts, so many world renown artist are self taught or didn't went to a private art school.

planning on attending accd this fall, and i told my boyfriend about the famous speech about how art center will suck up all your time and your relationships will all fail because of this rigorous school. so he's now kind of worried, we've been together for about a year.
he works a night shift doing computer/tech stuff, isnt in art school or anything, so we're on completely different tracks.
how have you guys been with juggling relationships and going to Art Center? is it impossible? esp for a couple that are not both going there?
what are class schedules like? mostly mornings? nights? monday-fri?

the speech is just to scared you and for the weak, i never had an all nighter, barely did any work on the weekend (except workshops) and got high grades on all my classes and i know a bunch of people that have relationships while going to art center, so don't sweat it, be diligent and do your work on time and everything will be fine.

ED is not on a rolling app system. The deadline is Feb 1st, only then do they start reviewing the ED apps. It takes about 3-4 weeks for you to recieve a reply after that, so don't be expecting an answer until March at least

Art Center does take up a lot of your time, and I have heard of some relationships not working out. It depends. It will probably be more difficult to find time to spend with each other but people work around it (studying together, making time) and there are many people at school in relationships. It helps a lot if your other is understanding about you not being able to spend as much time with him. Just manage your time really well and you can do it. You can always make a little time for things that matter to you the most. Time management is key.
Class schedules are unpredictable. Sometimes there are classes on Saturdays even but it depends on your major. Illustration usually doesn't, but trans/product does I think. I've had classes in the morning, afternoon, night, or all day so it's sort of random.

Is Art Center as 'good as it used to be?' It seems like a lot of people are worried about the rise in price. I imagine the instructors are still great?
15k a trimester.....holy shit! How do you pay for that! Man that's gonna be Hell for me if I decide to go, seeing as I'd have to find a place to live there AND pay that kind of fee! Of course that'd be in a couple of years from now when I'm decent enough for ED :P.
edit: oh my god it'd be like 22-23k a semester for me including cost of living. That's like....50-60k a year. O_O
also, if i were to say submit a portfolio a year or two from now, would I still include my high school transcript? I'm graduating from an AA degree soon...so I've completed two years of college. Would I just submit that rather than a HS transcript?

Entertainment Design is best for concept art, unless you're not interested in the design process and just want to draw. Then maybe Illustration with the entertainment arts track might be better (MAYBE)

As an update on the scholarship thing, I gave the folks at ACCD's Admissions a call and got my answers. That lady sure had a lot of patience, haha. This is what I gathered:
New incoming freshmen are automatically applied for scholarship review if they confirm that they will be attending the school the upcoming term (or otherwise stated in their acceptance letter). No extra paperwork, no nothing else. The school'll keep your portfolio for a few more weeks at max for the review and give you a call and/or email heads up when they're done and you can pick up your portfolio or have it mailed to you.
I don't know the specific details for students who are already enrolled, but to maintain a scholarship they have to show what they've been working on every term, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey everyone I'm quite new here. But seeing all the Art center students here I think its a great place to post this question. I am planning to apply to Art center college of design for their illustration program. However, I am currently facing a big problem in doing life drawing pieces
I live in a country where essentially it is hard to conduct any life drawing classes. And so far, having searched high and low have found none. I wonder if I could substitute live drawing with drawing figures from photos instead? Would that make a difference? I wonder if anyone had any advice to give on portfolio preparation and different tips that might help me get in too. Thanks!

Does anyone have any advice on high school graduates going directly to accd?
I've talked a teacher there and he recommended going there as a graduate because in his opinion, those enrolling straight out of high school usually struggle more and the school requires a very high maturity level.
I've also talked to a alumnus and he advised that if I am serious in making art my career, I should go directly to accd (or an art college).
I am still a bit undecided but the major setback for me is that accd does not offer any study abroad programs for the illustration department. :(

1. yes, those fresh out of high school tend to struggle more as they are not yet mature enough nor have the dedication for it (but not all of them)
2. no, looks like that alumni has no idea, not going directly to art school and enrolling at a community college does not mean you are not serious about art, in fact going to community college gives you the chance to improve and mature as well as prepare you to go to art school.

while figure drawings help a lot, i'm sure the peeps in admissions understand if that kind of thing is unavailable to you. the point of that part of the portfolio isn't to have nekkid peeps in there, but to gauge your ability to observe from life and draw/paint it.
try substituting figs with a couple of still life paintings or portraits of your self or family members.
of course, if you're still in doubt, call them up and ask them yourself. i entered for illustration in 2009, so there's a chance my idea of their requirements is outdated.

well i got half-ride when i went, and i asked the dep chair about that same question and unfortunately they don't give more than that as the funds are really low and even lower now so don't expect too much, at most a half-ride but they don't give much of those now days.

Anybody want to give feedback on ACCD's teachers? Which ones offer the harshest critique, which ones are less likely to give a crap? Note: I'm in ED, and I believe I'll be working in my foundation classes alongside Transportation students for the first few terms.
Actually, I'm not even looking for names. Just stories on what the teachers are like there, I suppose.

well they are all really good except for one, there is this one teacher forgot her name that was teaching design one class there were two women one was joan who is really good but the other one is crap. I got that teacher while there and she doesn't even knows how to use Illustrator so she had the T.A took over the lesson and she has really bad reviews on ratemyprofessor.com from artcenter and otis students.
p.s i just check and she got fired.

I applied back in dec/jan for the fall 2011 grad in media design course and its april 21st now. I've been trying to get in touch with accd through mails and phone calls and noone can seem to tell me if any decision has been made for my application. Theyre not replying to my mails either. It's really strange.
Kind of lost what to do. In or out, atleast let me know?! anyone ever been in my situation?
I'm an international applicant who'll be relying on scholarships and loans but i need to atleast know if I got accepted or rejected rofl! :medusachow: Was supposed to know back in freaking march!

Oh sweet, I'll be going into the ED program in the Fall term. Was kinda curious who my 20 or so classmates would be.
Also, anyone know of any good neighborhoods around Art Center in which to get an apartment? I'm currently in Shanghai until July, and apartment hunting in July seems kinda risky. So any information would be beneficial, thanks!

EchoArt7 Checked your sketchbook and lemme tell you that man, I AM GONNA REALLY ENJOY LEARNING WITH YOU. I'm not too familiar with the LA area, but from what I've been told Altadena is a good place to start rooting for a place. Hello Artists and Friends,
In June of 2010 Atelier Marchant kicked off with our first workshop being Bill Perkins' newly designed Color Boot-Camp 5-Day intensive. Bill is a master in color understanding and in his ability to simplify the complexity of color perception he is genius. The workshop was such a success and students gave such overwhelmingly positive feedback, that we decided to offer the workshop again at the end of this month!
Perkins has extensive knowledge and experience when it comes to color, working in the commercial Art field as well as a Fine Artist...
In 1990 he became the Art Director on Disney's Aladdin. As Art Director he designed the style and developed the first discrete style guide which was designed to mine the collaborative process and secure predictable outcomes. An avid lifelong student himself, Bill began teaching color, composition and design at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art in 2002. When he left Disney in 1994 he worked as a Visual Development artist, Art Director, and Concept Artist for Warner bros, DreamWorks, then moved to San Anselmo to work for ILM. When he returned to southern California in 2001, Bill opened High St. Studio as a pre-production and concept design studio with the following clients, DNA Productions, Character Builders, Disneytoons, Walt Disney Animation Studio, Hot Donut productions, 9th Ray Studio, Mass Media, Sprite Entertainment, Spark Unlimited, THQ, and Paramount Studios. In 2007 Bill returned to Disney to finish development on Bolt and continued on to art direct a short project and joined the visual development team designing for Walt Disney Animation Studios on future projects.
This workshop will be a great learning experience for Artist at all levels of their personal artistic growth... Don't miss this opportunity to advance your skills!
http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/9905/monument4.jpg
Here's a quote from one of the attendee's of the last workshop
Scott Seeto: Concept Artist at DisneyToons studios
"I was at the last boot camp and came away with more knowledge and enthusiasm for painting then I did after four years of art college. I highly recommend that if you can take the time to take this session, you should do it! If I could have taken the time off work I would do again. I had a great time."
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/5569/touchr.jpg
If you are serious about improving your color sensitivity, this is an intense, five-day painting workout that will do just that. I have carefully designed the format, aids, and procedures to challenge right brain processing which allows many artists to experience startling rapid growth in color perception, color mixing, and color vibration. Because we are painting from life I will unveil color theory, not through exhaustive lectures and painting color chips but through experiencing and painting these effects as they reveal themselves in real life situations. I will set-up situations that clearly express all seven basic contrasts of color in various combination's and mutations. As a bonus, the paintings produced by each artist during this course will be labeled with the specific applied theory, which it captures, and these will serve as documents of their personal journey, to study from and reflect on for years to come!
This course is suggested for students, professional artists, Illustrators, Designers, and digital painters. The course will be conducted in oil paints but your experiences will translate to other mediums directly. Some familiarity with alla-prima approach and basic color mixing is recommended.

Well, I've been accepted to the fall term of Illustration. And I wasn't offered any scholarship. Last week I went over to ACCD, and talked to the admissions counselor (whom I knew already for years). What she said was they'll pull up my files again and look over if there's anything they could do.
Today, I get a call during class, I couldn't pick it up, but the voice mail was about revision on my scholarship. The lady said to check my email and mail.
I got so excited. Cus I was in the worst dilemma of my life, choosing btwn Otis and ACCD. Only thing that kept me away from ACCD was the price tag.
I checked the email, and it turns out to be 2,500 per semester. Which is not much. I am definitely grateful. But not enough to support me much. I'm thinking that I should ask them for more. At least 4,000. Then I'll go if not I'll just choose Otis. Worth the try no?

Ah man that sucks. Yeah ACCD looks wayyyy too expensive to be able to afford without at least a half-ride scholarship, which is apparently the highest amount they will offer. Looks like you either need that scholarship or a rich family to back you to go to that school. I'd say shoot for 4000+ like you said or go to Otis.

i will be entering accd illustration this fall, and there are a few questions i have. regarding GE classes, how does that work? since i just graduated high school, i have basically none of the GE done. also, what exactly are the illustration tracks? specifically, what do they focus on? to me, the illustration major seems like a giant mosh pit that has like .... everything, from fine artsy types to the ID/concept art stuff.. its just a bit confusing lol..

I'm new to this website and I haven't applied to Art Center yet, but that is my number one choice so far. I need to build my portfolio and seeing all the art work on here frightens me quite a bit but i'm eager to move forward in life. I'm wondering if any of you took classes out side of high school prior from being admitted to ACCD. I heard the average freshman's age was 22, is that true?
I really want to go there but I'm scared I won't build a strong portfolio in time. I heard they are more focused on figure drawings rather then finalized art work from a previous applicant but she never walked into her second interview because of financial issues.

I recommend going to pasadena city college first, it is a community collge also in pasadena, they have the number one transfer rate of students to art cenetr and all the students there are known to excel at art center. Almost all of the teachers at PCC are either: current teachers, former teacher or/and alumni from art center, so there is no one better than them to get you ready to go to art center. I really recommend taking classes from: stan kong, allen aye, albert yu, rick osaka aka: mr miyagi lol, atheberry (or something like that), morrison, morphesis and joe bell, might be missing some of them but all of them graduate from art center so they know how to do this.

Also, the teachings of Roland Young, who made the entire class, including myself, eat grass on our first day of art school. He was communicating to us how we are subservient to authority and took us outside of the classroom to this bed of grass. As we were talking, he told us “rip some grass off the ground.” We did. He then told us to “eat it.” No one budged. He then screamed “EAT IT” and all of us shoved the grass blades into our mouths. Roland taught us the necessity of concept……

If an Art Center teacher, or any teacher, does that to you, I suggest you kick them in nutz, kick'm in the face when 'it' drops to the ground and drop the class. Being bipolar or having a cluster B personality disorder doesn't give you the right to be an abusive prick.
Anybody that went through grade school knows that's nothing more then a bully tactic.
I don't wanna bump this thread, so for those of you that think being an abusive prick helps you be creative:

I just received my acceptance packet from ACCD's product design undergrad for Fall 2012, and am super happy about this! But it's finally sinking in just how expensive going to this particular school is. Am biting my nails waiting to hear back from scholarship committee. Just picked up my portfolio but they say it'll take possibly another six weeks to hear back.
Has anyone from Fall 2012 received news from scholarship committee yet?
Is it true that the max you can possibly get is half scholarship these days? (I'm not even sure I can handle even half the tuition...) Anyone in recent starting semesters manage anything more than half?

Hi everyone! I got accepted for Illustration for the fall! they also offered to let me start in the summer! I was really excited, but their summer term starts before my current semester ends :/ so I'm starting in the fall.
I was also wondering about scholarships. When are they supposed to send award letters out? Do you think it'd be possible to use other schools scholarship awards against what art center offers in hopes of maybe getting more? I've heard they dont give out much, but they're SO expensive, any little bit would help.

I got accepted to Graphic Design program for Fall 2012 term. I'm also an international but I'll probably be living outside Pasadena (like Alhambra, since I heard it's cheaper to live there). Last week I sent the school my acceptance of admission form so I hope I can get a response soon along with my transfer credits :)
I was wondering though, since I didn't apply for scholarship (I think I missed the deadline for that), is it possible for me to apply for it later? I'm highly aware that tuition is definitely the issue, especially for international student.
One more question, does Art Center teach you techniques (tutorials, how to use some particular software, introduction to advanced digital tools)?

Yes it is possible to reapply for scholarship, unfortunately for budget reasons and for the hell of it they don't give scholarships to fist term students, well at least for illustration. They do give you your entrance scholarship and then you will have to reapply once you are on your second term, again all of this happen for the illustration program, i don't know how it is for graphic design though.
An yes Alhambra is way cheaper (i live here) and it's like a 20-30 minute drive to artcenter from here.
Oh almost forgot, yes they do have classes teaching you different software techniques as well as having workshops for anyone after class, but everyone going to artcenter should already have decent skills to survive.

Hi chil3, thank you for your answer. Hopefully the same thing goes to graphic design program.
Yes I can do Photoshop. I've been doing it for five years or so. But to be honest, I'm not an expert at other softwares like Illustrator or InDesign. I've heard that the average age for freshmen in Art Center is 22 years old and most of them have had a professional background/full time artist prior to entering Art Center, while I'll be fresh out of the college by the time I enter Art Center (I'm 19). In addition, I'm currently balancing my studio classes with some general education classes in college (I'm not a full time art student like most of you guys are at the moment). As for designing skills, I've been improving it purely through online tutorials, so I'm quite an amateur. That's why I'm a little worried that professors and classmates at Art Center might have high expectations towards my skills.
Can you give me some tips and suggestions what to prepare/face to enter this school?

Hi everyone,
I just got accepted to the fall 2012 illustration term for undergrad, and from what I've heard and seen (on youtube) about Art Center, I'm completely in like with it. i just have a bucketload of questions.
-So I'll be entering as an 18-year-old, so would this set me apart from my peers? I've heard a lot about how everyone is older, how people have no social life, no dorms, and sort of a lack of community. I find a sense of community really important, though, and I'm also really hoping that being 18 won't isolate me from everyone else.
-Second of all, I've heard that the school is very "industry focused", so they set you up for a career in the art industry without much room for conceptualizing. Is this true?
I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing. I like the idea of conceptual artwork but I'm more used to doodling and drawing for a narrative, so I want to practice that before I get into the "industry focused" work.
I'm also pretty interested in 3D work, taking liberal courses (I heard that Korean Literature was interesting), and travelling abroad. Does Art Center allow room for this in their curriculum?
-Some other small things that bother me are the fact that I don't have a car, so does the campus have vans or zip cars or something? Any sort of transportation to get back and forth between the school and the apartments?
-How comparable is Art Center to, say, SVA, RISD, MICA, Ringling, or VCUarts' programs for someone who wants to be a concept artist or visual development artist?
-Do teachers work part time, and the other time in the actual work field? I heard that this was pretty important.
-What is it like in a classroom? Do teachers work closely with the students or do they just yell at them and leave them to work independently?
:D thanks if you at least read this far... i don't know what i'll do.

Hi mirajuana, yeah I definitely feel you. unfortunately art center will take up most of your time, unless you can find a class on a saturday on pcc, i can recommend taking classes with schenider and joan caan at pcc, they also teach at art center at least for joan.
Also don't listen to all the bs about artcenter having no life, heck i did pretty much no homework on the weekend and went out frequently with friends both from home and artcenter, if there is one thing the guys at artcenter know how to do, besides from designing, it freaking partying.

So I'm a 20 year old college student who just got accepted to Art Center as a second term undergrad with a $7,500 per term scholarship. Kind of sucks that I have to do 7 more terms and that most of the classes I did in college didn't do anything for my transfer but c'est la vie. I'm still waiting to hear from the Cal Grant peoples. Thing is though is that I live about an hour south in Orange (in Orange County) and chances are I might be commuting when I attend the school (though I might possibly move in with my cousins). That's the risky biscuit right there but other than that tuition is tough. I'm going to email the admissions department and ask them if they can raise my scholarship award by a bit to make it more affordable.
Anyway, I also talked to the financial aid department and they said that I can do work study for about $500 per term and I also asked about the other scholarship opportunity for continuing students. Basically, they said that it's a separate scholarship so after a year of attending the school, I can apply for that one and quite possibly get another scholarship.

Ent. course in Illustration or just Entertainment Design? Which one is better? Portfolio will not be a problem.
Also, i find out that for first one I'm gonna get BFA and for the Ent Design its only BOS degree. So... any suggestions?

Try going on their website, all majors and tracks are listed. See which professors are teaching what and then do some research. If you do decide to go with Illustration - Entertainment track, take all of Gary Meyer's classes, the man is amazing.

Hi chil3, thank you for your suggestions! I'm currently in De Anza College and I'm not sure if they have similar classes with PCC. Is it possible to take some classes in PCC at the same time as enrolling in Art Center? But in any case, I'll keep the instructors you suggested in mind!
Hi mirajuana, yeah I definitely feel you. I'm 19 and I'm afraid the school will be somewhat making us isolated from our the community, especially I'm currently in college where I definitely feel that the sense of community here is really as engaging as high school. But well, let's hope that someone from Art Center can give us a good answer
unfortunately art center will take up most of your time, unless you can find a class on a saturday on pcc, i can recommend taking classes with schenider and joan caan at pcc, they also teach at art center at least for joan.
Also don't listen to all the bs about artcenter having no life, heck i did pretty much no homework on the weekend and went out frequently with friends both from home and artcenter, if there is one thing the guys at artcenter know how to do, besides from designing, it freaking partying.
Phew, good to hear that the social life at Art Center is not as scary as what people have always said. I understand that being an art student means having tons of workload and often have to stay overnight at school, but I also don't want to lose my social life. Anyway, thanks for the information!
Also, one more thing, I know that Art Center doesn't offer foundation classes (such as color theory, 2D, 3D, drawing classes, etc), but do they at least offer classes where students can learn more about the techniques of digital software programs? Like Photoshop, how to use Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, etc and what sort of techniques students can utilize using the tools from those programs?
I've already got familiar with Photoshop, but not very much with programs like Illustrator and InDesign. I've so far spent some time learning how to use Illustrator through online tutorials though, but my skill in Illustrator is still in the very beginner level.

Hi, im accepted to art center for this fall. So i havent attened yet, but i know some people in the school and have been researching the school for a while now and i believe that they have you take a class called Digital Design 1 your first term, and i think thats kind of an intro to photoshop and illustrator and such. at least i hope so. otherwise, im screwed :) and even though they dont have really basic 2d, 3d and color theory classes, i (once again) think that those are all encompassed (to a slightly more advanced degree) in their Design 1 and 2 and Materials classes. again, i think. this is what i've gathered from my hours of research. but i could be totally wrong. so if i am, someone, PLEASE correct me.

hi there.
Im thinking about to apply to ACCD, but can't choose right major.
Ent. course in Illustration or just Entertainment Design? Which one is better? Portfolio will not be a problem.
Also, i find out that for first one I'm gonna get BFA and for the Ent Design its only BOS degree. So... any suggestions?
The main difference, I think, is how the two majors start out. In Ent. Arts you have the first few terms with the illustration people doing figure, comp, and color stuff, while in Ent. Design we had our first two terms in industrial design foundation (constructing and lighting things in 3d space + lots of building) with the product and trans people. No one is actually better, I think you can get to where you want to go regardless of which one you choose.
As for social life at art center, honestly it is what you make of it. If you have good time management nothings stopping you from going out and doing shit. But the key is time management.

I have one unrelated question regarding TOEFL. What if i don't get required minimum score (it is 80 as i remember), or get it, but don't get required minimum in Speaking section (that is 23) or in the other one? Because on the official Art Center's website there is a note that College may require minimum scores in each section, however its only "may require", not "required".
In fact, TOEFL is the only thing that prevents from being accepted. Sad but true.

Anybody know when I should start applying for Spring 2013 for Entertainment Design or Illustration? Not sure what I'll be shooting for between those two, just curious. I hear the deadline is October 1st, but I'm wondering when they accept early applications?

Hey, was wondering if someone knew where to find roommates for Art Center? Been searching for a while and haven't found anyone :( Checked the facebook pages as well...

I'm in the same boat as Finniam. I'm looking for a room for about $500 a month. I'd like to move in sometime in June and unfortunately the only one Ive found was looking for a room mate this month :/
How feasible is $500 a month for a room?

Hey Imogine and Finiamm,
To look for roommates art center has a special site for that. If you email housing at art center they'll direct you to the link.
But honestly it is best if you came to the school to look for posters of wanted roomates. As for 500 as a budget, I'm afraid you might be setting it a little too low. Generally rental prices closer to Art Center cost 600+. I have friends who are even paying up to 900. However, if you have a car and live further away in Pasadena I don't see a problem finding something around your budget.
Paper Trains,
You are right in some respect. Digital Design can be taken in the first term though not always. Most people do it in their second (as far as I can see anyway). Illustrator is taught a little bit in design 1 but honestly its too little to count as real instruction of the program. If you want to be exempted from taking Digital design, you can sit for a waiver test to prove that you have sufficient knowledge of both photoshop and illustrator.

Hi Ics, do you mean Art Center don't teach the exact Illustrator technique, like how to make a vector, how to utilize vectors in making a logo stuff like that?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. They do teach illustrator, but in a separate class called Digital Design. But it is not taught in Design 1 even though most students will usually take Design 1 before they take Digital Design

What's the scholarship situation lately? Is entertainment design still getting shafted when it comes to scholarship?
